Here is why Mukesh Ambani is letting you stream IPL for free on JioCinema when he can charge you big bucks–

The IPL season has started with a bang! JioCinema reported that around 12 crore viewers logged in to watch the opening match, and the numbers are expected to go up as the season continues. 

Seems like a great opportunity for Reliance to monetize, right? 

Even Disney+Hotstar had kept the matches behind a paywall when they had the digital streaming rights to IPL.

They charged the audience Rs 1,499 as a subscription fee to watch IPL.

This way, Disney+Hotstar made around Rs 1,200 crore from subscription fees during IPL 2022. On top of that they ran advertisements during the match out of which they made around Rs 1,100 crore. 

But then why is Jio not using the same strategy?

Well, that is because they have stumbled upon a better plan!

You see, by letting people stream the matches for free, JioCinema has been able to amass a larger audience on their platform.

Let us compare viewership numbers to understand this.

Around 8 crore people watched the opening match of IPL 2022 (streamed by Disney+Hotstar). On the other hand, around 12 crore people tuned in to watch IPL 2024’s opening match (streamed by JioCinema).

That is a 50% bump in the audience!

JioCinema then allows brands to advertise to a larger audience, charging them a higher price for advertisement slots.

 In 2023, JioCinema made a whopping Rs 3239 crore in ad revenue out of IPL 2023. That is more than Disney+Hotstar’s subscription and advertisement revenues combined!

Elon Musk wants to directly compete with Mukesh Ambani! Can he win?

You probably already know that India is opening up its gates to let in Elon Musk and his electric car business Tesla. But that’s not all, Musk also wants to bring in his Satellite internet business- Starlink.

For those who don’t know, Starlink is a constellation of over 6000 satellites in Earth’s lower orbit that provide internet coverage without the need of physical wires.

Let me break it down for you.
The internet reaches you via physical cables.

The broadband in your home reaches you through underground cables. The internet on your phones reaches you via cell towers around you, which are in turn connected through cables.

But in the case of Starlink, the satellites directly provide you with internet through a ground station. The signals are transmitted through air, there is no need for physical wires.

This means Starlink can provide internet in the remotest parts of the country where telecom players like Jio or Reliance don’t set up towers as the infrastructure cost of laying out cables and cell towers would far outweigh the money they would make from those areas. 

Not just that, Starlink provides low latency and unlimited data, giving it an edge over other internet providers even in urban areas.

This is a direct threat to Jio and Airtel, who control close to 80% market share in the segment!

Now, Reliance and Airtel don’t plan on taking this lying down. They are also working on their own versions of Starlink- JioSpace Fibre and Airtel Eutelsat OneWeb.

But do you think they would be able to compete with Musk’s Starlink, which has been working on this for the past five years and has already deployed its services in more than 70 countries?

Whereas, you can get a simple 1 CR term plan for 10-15K/year.

And if you think the investment returns of a ULIP would be worth the high premiums– that may not be true either. Most ULIPs don't beat returns you could generate with a simple mutual fund investment. 

So, if you want to invest– just invest. Don’t mix insurance with investment. 

But, your father is not wrong– it’s the right time to get a term plan. 

Since you’re young, insurers would happily offer you insanely low premiums. 

And, once you buy, your premiums will be locked forever & never increase! 

Plus, you can claim tax deductions up to 1.5 lakhs under Section 80C.
