With 40 years of experience in infusion nursing, I founded Expert Infusion Nurse Consulting to advance excellence in infusion and mentor other infusion professionals. My certifications include CRNI, IgCN, OCN, and VA-BC, and I have an immersive background in home infusion, ambulatory infusion, and specialty infusion for various populations and conditions.

I am passionate about building quality infusion nursing programs and ambulatory infusion centers, providing clinical guidance and legal services, and supporting patient advocacy and safety. I help infusion providers overcome the challenges that can affect patient care, quality, and satisfaction. My mission is to share my infusion expertise and strategy with as many infusion team members as possible through my outreach.

Does this man look sick to you?

This is my husband’s face 24 hours post minimally symptomatic NSTEMI. Less than a day earlier this guy had an episode of chest pain and diaphoresis that lasted for approximately 10 minutes. By the time he was evaluated in the ER the pain was largely gone and he looked pretty much normal, as were two serial EKGs.

Then the troponin returned elevated. The interventional cardiologist worked him in for a cath which showed that his LAD was 99% occluded - the guidewire shut it off like a bank vault door.

I don't make it a habit of personal revelations on LinkedIn, but consider this my PSA.  Both of us have no doubt that if I were out of town he may have waited to be evaluated and, when the pain disappeared, decide to put off the appointment until the following week.

Nurses, how many times have you heard this?  I am frequently asked to perform legal review of medical records to discern if the Infusion Nurses Society Infusion Therapy Standards of Practice were adhered to.  In most cases it's evident that the nurse had good intent. Also, in most cases, the documentation fails to support this. 

I get it; we're all busy. But are you too busy to support your means of making a living?  Could you justify your right to hold a nursing license by your documentation patterns?

Have you heard the latest?

The just released 'Antineoplastic Therapy Administration Safety Standards for Adult and Pediatric Oncology: ASCO-ONS Standards' (Robert Siegel MD and Kristine LeFebvre, DNP, RN, NPD-BC, AOCN et al) is the ultimate Lonely Planet guide, but for oncology therapy.  The roadmap to quality in oncology care that these recommendations create is concise and comprehensive.

I had the pleasure of hearing MiKaela Olsen, DNP, APRN-CNS, AOCNS, FAAN speak at the Infusion Nurses Society conference in May, and she touched on the new standards.  Having just received them in my July issue of the Oncology Nursing Society Oncology Nursing Forum, I can vouch for the comprehensive safety measures and guidelines detailed in this publication.

Review these and adopt them for your organizations, please.  As antineoplastic therapies begin to move to alternate sites of infusion, we can't afford to ignore this critical standards update. Patient lives depend on our diligence as practitioners.
