The most valuable person in the room isn’t who you think.

There are few groups of people in the world:  

1. The actually wealthy.  
2. The people who know the wealthy but aren’t wealthy themselves.  

1. The ultra-skilled.  
2. The people who know the ultra-skilled but aren’t particularly skilled themselves.  

Most people think no. 2s are nobodies.  

From my experience :
The “nobody” who can spot opportunities is often more valuable than the “somebody.”  

Strategically building a team around these two groups to create something even bigger 


You don’t need to be the billionaire.  
You don’t need to be the ultra-skilled expert.  

You become valuable when you can
👉🏻 connect the dots.  
👉🏻 build the right team.  
👉🏻 leverage others’ strengths.  

What doesn’t work?  

Faking it. 
Pretending you’re ultra rich or skilled.

What does work?  
Owning your role.  
Knowing how you add value.

Yesterday, I judged Imperial student startups.

I remember 5 teams.
5 different approaches.
5 valuable lessons.

Let me break it down:

1. The Speedy team 
Team 1 understood the golden rule:
Traction speaks louder than words.

In 4 weeks:

Secured £300K in LOIs
Got ready to pay customers

Built while selling

They didn't wait for perfection.
They moved fast and got commitments.

2. The Network Ninjas
Team 2 played smart.
They leveraged their Puma placement connections.

Instead of cold outreach,
they built alongside their future customers.
Leverage your network

3. The Storytellers
Team 3 captured hearts.

They shared their story
Their 'why' was crystal clear.

No corporate jargon.
Just authentic experiences that
made their solution feel inevitable.

4. The Future Thinkers
Team 4 spotted the venture studio trend.

They want to tackle the same problem I am:
High startup failure rates.

They're aware of what shifts are taking place 

5. The Culture Shapers
Team 5 reflected our generation's values:

Culture first
Social impact
A desire for a different way of working

They're not just accepting old systems.
They're building what they want to see.

One interesting thing I also noticed:

As judges, we'd ask tough questions:
"How will you handle X?"
"What about this major challenge?"

Instead of saying:
"That's our weakness. Here's how we'll solve it..."

They'd defend.
They'd deflect.
They'd try to prove they knew it all.

I made this same mistake.
Now I know Investors don't expect perfection.

They expect self-awareness.

Another note is Incentives:

When entrepreneurship is part of the curriculum,students deliver.

But here's the challenge:

High tuition fees
Heavy coursework
Limited startup time

We're losing potential founders to this system.

The Solution?

Bridge experienced operators with young innovators.

After speaking with thousands of founders, I've learned:

Success rates multiply when you combine:

Young founders' fresh perspectives
Seasoned entrepreneurs' battle scars
Aligned incentives

This is why venture studios work.
They're not just investment vehicles.
They're innovation accelerators.

Why is it that so many groundbreaking ideas stay locked in academia, while the market races ahead?  

After a family office breakfast discussing the need to support youth in this space I went to talk to the leaders in Universities on whats happening now in the spin out and student founder space... 

A very insightful day and one that makes me more confident than ever about what I'm building at E11evate.

Biggest issues mentioned : 

👉🏻Funding Gaps & POC funding
👉🏻Need for meaningful and true collaboration with experts in business 
👉🏻Equity Splits & Licensing challenges

The traditional “power law” in investing feels increasingly outdated. 

The industry is evolving,

Operational investors—those who roll up their sleeves and provide real value—are more crucial than ever.

Universities need better, more meaningful partnerships with business leaders to guide student founders and academic researchers beyond just theory.

This event wasn’t just a conversation about problems.

It was a call to action for those ready to elevate the spinout ecosystem. 
 
I’m excited about upcoming opportunities to work with University of Oxford and reconnect with Imperial College London and University of Cambridge to support the next generation of founders.

Founders with $40k–$100k / under 6 months run way in the bank act like they have time. 


They push off making critical investments, thinking, “We’ll figure it out after this next milestone.”

Then they hit $10k–$20k and realize they’re scrambling for a raise they aren’t positioned for.

But here’s the truth: 

If you wait until you’re running on fumes to prioritize marketing, traction, or investor alignment…

it’s already late.

Why should you plan earlier?

1️⃣ You lose leverage: 

Investors can sense desperation. Starting with more runway gives you negotiating power.

2️⃣ Marketing takes time: 

Building momentum isn’t instant. Campaigns, user acquisition, and investor awareness require consistent effort.

3️⃣ Strategic decisions need capital: 

Without cash, you can’t pivot, scale, or test new strategies effectively.

The founders who are more likely to succeed in their next raise are the ones who start thinking ahead—while they still have fuel in the tank.

So, if you’ve got $50k–$100k left, ask yourself:

Do you have a clear roadmap on how you will position yourself in the best way?

Are you investing in traction that builds confidence with investors?

Because the clock doesn’t stop just because you’re waiting.

Plan now, so you’re not scrambling later.

People choose to stay where they can become their best selves.

At the gym this Monday morning, I'm thinking about building better culture. 

2025 is my focus year for this, but I'm not waiting , I've already seen changes since making this a priority.

A conversation with one of our fellows stuck with me. 

When asked why he chose us over another opportunity, his answer was simple: 

we supported his journey to becoming his best self, rather than forcing him into a predefined box.

I'm not a cutthroat person. 

I struggle to imagine building a culture where I'd kick someone out for being a minute late just to demonstrate high standards...

But it doesn't always have to be that approach I think.

When I think about myself, I thrive working with people who:

- Can challenge me to be better, without pushing me to burnout (that's my own specialty 😅)

- Inspire growth without making me feel inadequate (another thing I'm good at doing to myself)

So when I think about the culture I'm building at E11evate it looks like this:

• Excellence coexists with empathy
• High standards meet human understanding
• Success is measured by both results and fulfillment

The path ahead is long - I have a decade+ to refine this. 

But I'm convinced that building a culture of support, growth, and authentic achievement isn't just good for people - it's good for business.

It’s 9am Monday and I’m ready to smash this week out the park.

I just finished reading an article on this topic
Here's whats interesting:

While 1st gen family offices put 55% into alternative investments... 
2nd gen offices take a completely different approach.

Let me break this down for you:
First-Gen Family Offices: 
• Founder-led decisions (90% active family participation) 
• High-risk appetite 
• Heavy focus on alternatives (55% of portfolio) 
• Big bets on buyouts (27%) and VC (11%) 
• Only 30% in traditional stocks

Why? Because they're entrepreneurs at heart. 

They built wealth through calculated risks. 
And they're not afraid to keep taking them.

Second-Gen Family Offices: 
• Professional management approach 
• Focus on preservation 
• Lower-risk alternatives (51% of portfolio) 
• Emphasis on private credit (17%) 
• Higher fixed income (21%)

The difference? Second-gen leaders prioritize legacy over growth. 

They're playing defense, not offense.

Here's the fascinating part:

While both generations invest heavily in alternatives... Their risk tolerance couldn't be more different.

What it ACTUALLY looks like: 

• Writing decks, proposals or taking calls at 2 AM 
• Figuring out deal structuring through trial and error 
• Building partnerships while battling imposter syndrome 
• Making mistakes and pivoting fast

Some workplaces make asking questions feel like a risk. That’s a problem.


In some companies, asking a question feels like stepping into a minefield.  

You’re afraid of looking stupid.  
You’re afraid of being dismissed.  
You’re being told to “F off ”  

Questions are how we grow.

If your team is scared to ask, they’ll stop learning.  

If they stop learning, they’ll stop improving.  

And if they stop improving, your company stops growing.  

I’ve been in environments where asking a question felt like a weakness.  

And I’ve seen the damage it does:  
- People stay silent when they’re confused.  
- Mistakes made because no one speaks up.  
- Innovation dies because no one feels safe to challenge the status quo.  

That’s why I’m building a place to create a culture where it’s safe to ask questions.
  
Where curiosity is rewarded, not punished.  

Where “I don’t know” is met with support, not judgment.  

Because when people feel safe to ask, they:  
- Learn faster.  
- Solve problems better.  
- Build trust with their team.  

What’s one thing you’ve done to make your team feel safe to ask questions?

Do you sometimes feel that the feedback you give to others doesn't land the way you want it to?

Here's what can happen when someone receives direct feedback:
 • They get defensive
 • They make excuses
 • They shut down completely
 • The feedback gets ignored

Sound familiar?
After reading up more on the psychology on this, I trust the problem isn't the feedback.

It's how we deliver it.
It's not how we give the feedback
It's in asking the right questions.

Here's the psychology behind it:

People hate being told they're wrong.
But they love discovering how to be right.

People are more likely to accept a truth they’ve discovered themselves rather than one imposed on them.

People prefer to be in charge of their growth. 
Criticism takes away that sense of control, while questions give it back.

Instead of:
 "Your proposals are always late"
 I ask:
 "What's getting in the way of meeting deadlines?"

Instead of:
 "This needs to be better"
 I ask:
 "How do you feel about the quality?"

Instead of:
 "You should do X differently"
 I ask:
 "What would you change if you could?"

The results?
 • Team members will find solutions themselves
 • They will take ownership naturally
 • Changes will happen faster
 • Improvements will actually stick

Why this will work:
 • It removes ego from the equation
 • Creates ownership, not obligation
 • Builds trust, not resentment
 • Solutions come from within, not above

The best leaders don't give answers.
 They ask questions that lead to solutions.
