Who’s tired of watching?

Most business owners think time management is about squeezing in more work.

But for me, it’s about something bigger.

When I first started out, I believed building a business meant working nonstop.
Every spare minute, every weekend, every late night at the office.
That’s just what you’re supposed to do, right?

But then I realized:
If you’re not careful, you build a business—and miss your life.

I got tired of seeing my wife and daughter only in the margins.
So I started treating my calendar like I treat my investments: with intention.

I block out time for what matters most first—family dinners, school events, date nights.
Work fits around that, not the other way.

The funny thing? The business didn’t suffer. It grew. 
Because with clear priorities, I stopped wasting time on the small stuff that doesn’t move the needle.

I’m the Founder & CEO of HenderX Capital (Lightning Lending), where we help investors close fast, stay creative, and scale bigger than banks will allow. As a licensed Principal Lending Manager (PLM), we operate fully independent, giving us the ability to build our lending platform exactly how we want.

    •    Passed the PLM exam and built an internal capital engine model designed to fuel long-term growth.
    •    Helped several family offices launch their own hard money funds, totaling more than $700M.

Personal Glimpse
I’m a husband to Laina, dad to Scottie (Snugs), with another little one (Hal) on the way. Outside of lending, you’ll find me skiing, training at the gym, or chasing my toddler around the house.

The best employees aren’t just those who follow orders—they’re the ones who look at how things are done and ask, "Is there a better way?"

Watching new team members do this makes all the difference.

When they question current methods in a respectful way, they show confidence and initiative.

And surprisingly, that often leads to better results.

It’s a skill I look for when hiring.

The ones who aren’t afraid to re-examine processes and suggest improvements are the ones who drive success.

And that’s what changes everything.

That’s the kind of mindset I want in my team.

The ability to look again, question, and improve—that’s the real secret ingredient for growth.

Honestly, I just don’t buy it.

Here’s how I think about it:

First, find ways to make money while you sleep. Real estate, stocks, side hustles—anything that pays you even when you’re not working. That’s real freedom.

Second, do work you don’t hate. I get a kick out of buying houses, fixing them up, and watching them make money. I can’t see myself ever really “retiring.” Why hang it up if you actually like what you do?

Third, just don’t need as much. It’s easy to get caught up chasing a bigger house or a newer car. But if you’re happy with less, you don’t have to work so hard just to keep up.

The truth is, you don’t have to play by the same rules everyone else does. You don’t have to buy into the whole “retire at 65, then start living” story.

Why not start living now? Build your freedom while you still have the energy.

Everyone remembers Blockbuster.

Almost no one remembers why they lost.

It wasn’t just the rise of streaming or better movies.

Blockbuster tried to grow fast with more stores, more late fees, and more promotions. 
But there was no system to really learn what people wanted or to adapt as habits changed.

Netflix changed everything.

They built a system:
Every customer’s movie list lived online.
Every rental became data.
Every week, their process improved.
From mailing DVDs to streaming, they tracked what worked—and ditched what didn’t.

Netflix didn’t “out-hustle” anyone.
They built systems that told them what to do next.

Blockbuster just opened more stores, hoping customers would keep showing up.

Guess who won.

Hustle will get you started. 
If you want to survive and grow, you need systems.

Do you really know your customers, or are you just hoping they’ll come back?

What are you building?

Every day in business, I see scenes that remind me of my baseball days.

Pressure situations? 
Feels just like a full count with runners on base. You focus, breathe, and make your move.

Dealing with losses? 
You drop a game on Friday, but the next one is coming fast. Same in business—there’s always another pitch. You regroup and get back in the lineup.

Winning as a team? 
Doesn’t matter who hit the home run—everyone celebrates. Business wins are the same. The scoreboard only changes when everyone does their part.

Constant practice? 
Baseball is hours in the cage for a shot in the game. In business, it’s the meetings, prep, and follow-through nobody sees.

People think business and baseball are totally different—but I keep seeing the same rules play out.

The best teams, the best players—they work, they bounce back, and they never go solo.

Funny how much the diamond and the boardroom have in common.

Most people work for money. 
But the smart ones know how to make money work for them.

That’s where real estate passive income comes in. 
It’s not just about buying a property and hoping for the best.

It’s about building a stream of income that runs in the background—so you get paid whether you check your portfolio this week or not.

Here’s what I’ve seen work over and over:

1. Buy rental properties in places people actually want to live. Good tenants, steady rent, and if you manage it right, few headaches.
2. Invest in REITs. All the benefits of real estate, none of the property calls at midnight.
3. Try real estate crowdfunding. Pooling with others lets you get in on buildings you’d never afford alone—and it’s way less risky than going solo.
4. Short-term rentals? Yes, the cash flow can be bigger—but only if you automate the work.
5. Don’t forget the tax tricks. Depreciation, 1031 exchanges, and cost segregation can keep more cash in your pocket.
6. Watch for the next wave. Multifamily properties and self-storage are hot. Even parking lots are big business now.
7. Use the latest tech. The right software can help you spot deals, handle payments automatically, and avoid a pile of paperwork.
8. Start with a plan. Know your goals and partner with people who’ve already done what you want to do.
9. Most important: Take action. Reading lists is easy. Making your first move is what sets you apart.
