💡A key concept in behavioral psychology is that we judge ourselves by our intentions, but we judge others by their actions. 

📍 You may have seen the online illustration of a man trying to pull a woman up from a cliff. A heavy rock is crushing the man’s back, while a snake is biting the woman's arm. The man thinks, "Why doesn't she try harder to climb?" The woman thinks, "Why doesn't he pull harder?" They are blind to each other's hidden burdens. He cannot feel the poison; she cannot see the crushing weight.

⁉️ And isn’t this exactly what happens in our workplaces, our homes, and our friendships every single day?

🫵 We view a colleague who missed a deadline as lazy. We don’t see the "boulder" of a sick parent they are caring for at home.

💭 We view a boss who sends a curt email as rude. We don’t see the "snake" of impending layoffs that they are trying to navigate to save the team.

🪨 Life is heavy. It is complicated. And the reality is that most people are fighting a battle you know absolutely nothing about. They are showing up, smiling in meetings, and getting the work done while carrying invisible weights that would bring many of us to our knees.

🤔 How do we address this disconnect?

➡️ Give the benefit of the doubt.
Shift your default mindset. Instead of assuming incompetence or malice, assume they are doing their best with the resources available to them. When expectations aren’t met, approach it with curiosity ("Is everything okay?") rather than judgment ("Why didn't you do this?").

➡️ Communicate your limitations. 
In the story of the man and the woman, silence is the enemy. If he screamed, "I am crushed!" and she screamed, "I am bitten!", they might find a new way to solve the problem. In business, we are often too proud to admit we are struggling. We need to normalize saying, "I am at capacity," or "I am dealing with a personal issue right now."

➡️ Look for the good.
Try to see the humanity in the people you meet. That driver who cut you off? Maybe they are rushing to a hospital. That barista who got your order wrong? Maybe they are working a second job to make rent.

✳️ Empathy is not just a soft skill; it is a strategic advantage. It bridges the gap between expectation & reality. It turns a transaction into a connection.

♾️ Next time you feel frustration rising because someone isn't meeting your expectations, pause. Remember the man and the rock. Remember the woman and the snake.
