As I previously worked for Powerhouse Fitness (more information below), which was acquired by Sports-Tiedje, I was invited back to the company in a more senior capacity to help lead a digital transformation project.

A large part of this role was working to improve return on advertising spend across a number of paid media channels.

Managed the transition of SEO from agency to in-house and developed a brand new SEO strategy.  We now manage all aspects of SEO in-house.

Managed the transition of paid search from agency to in-house and developed a brand new strategy. We managed to massively increase volume of leads within the first month while also dramatically reducing management costs and advertising spend.

Half of marketing is convincing people internally before you ever convince a customer. At least that was my experience when working in-house.

You need to convince the finance director that even though his niece doesn't like the idea, it doesn't mean it's a bad idea.

The sales director gets his knickers in a twist because part of your strategy involves posting on Instagram, but he's petrified because last time it got a few negative comments.

The CEO wants to know why you're not doing what the competitors are doing. You explain that the competitors are making a mistake. 

He doesn't care. He wants to make the same mistake, but faster.

Someone from customer service has "a few thoughts" on the campaign. 

The thoughts arrive in a 47-message email thread that copies in HR.

And then there's the board meeting where you present a strategy you believe in, only to watch it get redesigned by committee into something that bland that speaks to everybody and nobody at the same time.

By the time you've navigated all of that, actually reaching the customer feels like the easy part.

Job descriptions normally say things like "develop and execute marketing strategies." 

It didn't mention that half the job is diplomacy, therapy, and learning which battles are worth fighting...

When I worked in-house, I found the diplomacy part quite difficult to navigate. 

If marketing got invited to a meeting that included lots of other people from different departments, you just knew that the campaign was going to be an absolute disaster. 

Keep marketing meetings small.

One of our eCommerce clients just crossed £1million for the month of November. That's a 113% increase vs the same month last year. We've been working with them since May, so seeing this result feels particularly satisfying.

I love working with businesses in a specific sweet spot... 

Solid foundations, good product, but doing under £10 million in revenue.

These are the accounts where growth can be fast and aggressive because there's genuine headroom to scale.

The real credit here goes to the team, especially John, who spent his weekend managing accounts in real-time to squeeze every bit of revenue out of the peak period. 

Suffice to say, the client is over the moon.

Marketers are being asked to run faster on a treadmill that keeps getting narrower. Google search results now show about 4 text ads before you see anything organic. 

Shopping results often dominate a huge amount of space too. 

Sometimes Google drops in an AI snippet, 

Then maybe, just maybe, your content appears. If you're lucky.

Social's not much better. 

Organic reach on most platforms that matter is almost dead,

You probably need to pay for reach now unless you sell your soul by creating rage bait or doing silly dances.

Yet somehow, marketers are still expected to hit higher targets with the same budgets and the same headcount.

The goalposts haven't just moved. They've been picked up, carried to another stadium and hidden behind a paywall.

I'm not saying organic is dead. It's not. 

But anyone pretending it's 2015 out there is living in a fantasy. 

The game has changed, the rules have changed, but the expectation that marketers will just "figure it out" hasn't.

If you're feeling the squeeze right now, it's not in your head. It's real.

The majority of our clients did really well this Black Friday. 

However, it's clear that organic traffic is taking a hit in many cases. 

Unforutnetly we now live in an eco-system were we have to pay for traffic that was once free and hitting targets is often harder.

I just hope you get the appreciation (and the budgets) you deserve to hit your targets.

My friend launched his first business after getting news of redundancy. He secured two 4-figure sales in the first two months and is now waiting to hear back on a 6-figure project.

He's doing all of this in his spare time while his job winds down.

Here’s how he did it...

Last year, he reached out and asked me to mentor him.

I told him I’d never done that before, but since he’s a friend, I’d help point him in the right direction.

He was going to sell low-priced products on Amazon, but I suggested he dig deeper and look for something with higher price tags and better margins.

He eventually settled on a product with a minimum order value of around £3k, and project sizes that could go into the hundreds of thousands.

LESSON 1:
Don't be afraid to ask someone with experience for help or advice.

You don’t need to take everything on board, but when you’re starting out, there are things you might not be aware of, so speak to someone who’s been there.

Also, if you’re going to launch a business, there’s a good chance you’ll need to advertise.

Make sure your product has enough profit margin to actually afford that.

He set the business up to sell these products online via an e-commerce store.

But with a limited product range, it was tough to compete.

I advised him to try a slightly different funnel, one that focused on capturing leads rather than pushing for online transactions.

He gave it a go and it worked.

LESSON 2:
If what you’re doing doesn’t work straight away, don’t abandon everything.

Lots of people make a plan, and if it doesn’t go exactly as expected, they scrap it.

Be open-minded enough to pivot instead of giving up.

Since this was a brand-new venture, his ad budget was tight.

There wasn’t a lot of cash to throw around.

We had to use a traffic source that was relatively cheap, but doesn’t always convert well.

He called me one day and said, “I haven’t made a sale yet, but I think I need to get better at sales.”

That stuck with me.

He didn’t blame the traffic.

He didn’t complain about the business being new.

He took responsibility.

So he bought a book on selling and devoured it. 

LESSON 3:
He could’ve blamed the lack of sales on lead quality.

Or the fact that his business was brand new.

Instead, he took the situation by the scruff of the neck and decided to get better.

That mindset of taking ownership is something I see a lot in successful people.

It’s a much healthier way to grow.

When the leads started coming in, he went way above and beyond what most competitors would do.

He visited prospects at home.

Spent proper time with them.

Made sure his product was the right fit, and even told people when it wasn’t.

(That's how I like to do business too.)

He worked those leads harder than most established businesses I know.
