In 2008 Stephan was presented with the acclaimed USDLA Mobile Innovations Award, recognizing innovative platform technologies in support of long-distance, asynchronous and online learning. From 1997 to 1999 Stephan represented the United States under a standardization workgroup of IEEE, establishing international interoperability standards of learning environments.
