Two weeks after we were asked to step in to save nearly 2000 white rhino from slaughter, we have secured a route to financing the acquisition of the South African ranch and to fund the programme securing the future of the white rhino population in Africa. 

Over the next few days we will be discussing next steps with the owner and relevant stakeholders to see if we can make this work. 

I think we have everything in place BUT with every pledge of support from individual donors, Foundations, philanthropists and businesses looking to do something really meaningful for the planet, we can shift the solution from the knife edge, to a proposition that delivers the foundations to not only secure the future of these magnificent creatures…but enables us to replicate the programme across other apex species around the world; from elephants to whales.

We need to think through this headline very very carefully. 2015. COP 21. The Paris Accord. The aim was to limit global temperature rise by the end of the century to 1.5C. If we do everything in our power to act we can do this…

And yet it looks like we will not only fail, we will be breaching 1.5c within 12 years of that historic accord. An epic indictment of the failure of global leadership to address the challenges AND opportunities presented in Paris.

The most alarming statistic I have seen relating to the inability for the political / oil / finance sector to continue with their “f**k you” strategy is that if the EXISTING authorised and financed oil reserves are exploited, the world is on a trajectory for 4 degrees temperature raise by 2050.

😡To put that into context 4 degrees equals 4 m rise in sea levels. 270+ of the worlds biggest cities underwater, huge parts of the world uninhabitable. Billions of people migrating to the few spots on the planet where there is food water and shelter from heat and flooding. The oceans die and biodiversity collapses as species after species are wiped out. Then a total collapse of the food systems which feed us. Global geopolitics in total meltdown. 

This is Armageddon. At least being struck by an asteroid would be instant. 

There are times when this feels hopeless. 12 COPs later and we still don’t address the elephant in the room. Oil. We still have economies that measure success on GDP growth. MORE consumption is a measure of success. Not a signal of failure. 

Every individual, every school, every business and every community has to come together to do what WE CAN CONTROL to deliver a different future because I am pretty damn certain that:

This illustrates the number of Rhino whose futures we are looking to secure by acquiring the Platinum Rhino Ranch before security is stood down, feeding stops and the poachers run riot.

But our plan is not just to save this hugely important Rhino population. This is an opportunity to establish a sustainable model for financing Nature which we will then replicate across the world.

Now to many, this sounds a little ‘messed up’ - but saving nature because it is beautiful doesn’t appear to have got us very far… so a radical rethink of how we value nature is needed.

Seriously hyperventilating with tension as we prepare the D Day landing in the face of murderous opposition. Watch this space as a new dawn emerges from the dark skies for 2000 rhinos facing imminent slaughter from the poachers gathering from around the world 

Two days with UN and Great North Bog team in London developing the roadmap to invest $350bn into Global Peatland Restoration starting with the largest UK nature based restoration programme. A brilliant ‘eco hackathon’ - huge love and appreciation for everyone involved too numerous to mention but you know who you are!

Global Village: we need to guide the first pilot programme in Knaresborough Yorkshire through its launch stages so that we can build an economically stable model which can be replicated worldwide. But it will take time to do that and the team on the ground need sponsorship / financial support to accelerate the work. Not my usual kind of post but brilliant and important in equal measure. I think the 3rd one is the one I would be most upset about. Every parent should watch!

A huge reaction to my post earlier today re the issues of children accessing digital devices. As a parent of 8 children raised through the ‘digital revolution’ it is an issue that has challenged me for 30 years. Here are my observations. Not to preach … just to share. 

If you gave your children crack cocaine to keep them quiet whilst you do your chores or eat a meal, you would quite rightly by arrested and your children taken into custody. Digital devices are legalised crack cocaine for children.

The two greatest things you can do to help your children to be happy, functioning human beings are*

Engage them with sport 

Eat dinner together as a family

The two things you can do to enhance the possibility of your children developing mental health issues are:

Provide them with access to digital devices as a means of occupying them

Allowing peer pressure to dictate your response to your child having access to digital devices (gaming and mobile phones) rather than following your gut instinct (and science) which tells you that you are the parent and your job is to guide your child to make smart choices which sometimes means not being their ‘best friend’ 

Society can change. Smoking on a plane, in a restaurant or in a car was once seen as ‘normal’ - not anymore. Maybe one day soon we will look at seeing toddlers on iPhones at a restaurant with the same sense of horror. 

What I know for sure is, rather like crack cocaine … withdrawal is harder than not starting in the first place.

Take a global programme of focussed initiatives localised and made mainstream for 1 week each. Short sharp and powerful messaging making everyone in the community think about the issue in question. Driven by schools, businesses and the wider community. 

Then, issue based teams work year round with local authorities and agencies to unlock the systemic issues which create hurdles for enduring large scale engagement.

Let’s smash this - one issue at a time.

A brilliant explanation of why offsetting without a change in behaviour is unacceptable to any right thinking human being. 

As we see more and more creative talent working on climate messaging it gives me hope that we can change the trajectory of our future on this planet. Because if people do not understand the core elements of climate action - we cannot expect them to engage.

For me, if a business genuinely engages on a journey to becoming Net Positive, (beyond Carbon Net Zero - respecting people, planet and prosperity) then:

I would rather they fund nature restoration with a Carbon Offsetting programme from day 1 .. rather than wait until the end of their Net Positive journey and THEN offset their residual carbon balance that they cannot eliminate
