I got every job I applied for until I didn’t. Age 32, I was 2 years past my self-imposed deadline to succeed. I spent my 20s building two careers (teaching and law). But after moving to Australia for family reasons, I needed more qualifications to continue. It would cost $20,000+ I didn’t have. I was drifting, short on confidence, and scared about never finding the work I loved. And I was a single Dad with bills to pay. So I did what you do when feeling lost → Travel. But I needed to leave the meeting with something → Hope. “Your LinkedIn profile needs rewriting,” I said as we parted ways. “I’ll do it for free.” It was a bit audacious. Growing up, I wrote many short stories and devoured CD booklets to interpret song lyrics. Browsing my blue pocket Oxford dictionary was fun. I loved words. So, I was a decent writer, but I didn’t think it could be a career.
