A poll based on yesterday’s post: I’ve noticed more and more stores having associates yell a greeting when customers enter the store. What do you think of this?

I’ve noticed a retail trend lately… When you walk into the store, the associates yell “Welcome in” or “Welcome to (store name)” I get it… Better ratings for friendliness More welcoming environment More customer engagement As the customer service person, I love it. I will add $50 more in goods to save $7 in shipping... Why do we do this? The justification is: - What's one more - I was going to want this eventually - It's better to get something extra Avoiding $7 in shipping feels like a win. The truth is, this is an excellent strategy for retailers to incentivize customers to buy just a *little* more. Incremental purchases -> bigger basket size -> more sales A marketer once told me, "You can't fall for your own promotions!" But I will every time. Technology can be before its time. I remember working on Scan and Go back in 2006. You know the one... - Scanners are available on a wall when you enter the store - Scan your card - Scan your groceries and weigh your items - Go to checkout The trouble was that nobody wanted to do this. It was: - too cumbersome - time-consuming - Items didn't scan The project was abandoned. Fast forward to today, when I went to @walmart and was in and out of the store in 8 minutes using Scan and Go with Walmart+ The difference? - Connected to your phone - Intuitive scanning - Connected to self-checkout Sometimes, ideas are just ahead of their time. The technology and operations needed to catch up to make them successful. The reminder is: if something isn't working quite right, don't give up on it. It just might be before its time. How to not hire great talent.. I was reading a post about a candidate who refused to do a technical assessment and backed out of the interview. The hiring manager was shocked and disappointed. The assessment was estimated to take.. wait for it… 8 hours of work!!! No wonder the candidate backed out. A brilliant company has: - defined culture - clear values - defined work Hire based on that criteria, and not only do you get a great candidate experience, but a motivated, excited future member of the team. You don’t need to put people through 8 hours of free labor to find the right fit. Do you agree? #bebrilliant
