I cherished these values growing up. ๐ถ But when it came to adulthood and building the kind of life I knew I wanted to live they actually became anchors that prevented me from taking risks I needed to take.โ I was also insecure so I always pretended I was the smartest guy in the room. What fascinated me most was how indispensable he became to business leaders, politicians, and mafia dons who found themselves in legal trouble or needed something fixed. When I first started in my career, I would make a great presentation to my prospects and then ask the typical follow-up question. "So what do you think?" And they would give the typical response. "Sounds good. I will let you know." And for the first year in my career, I actually thought they were going to call me back. Talk about naive. It was a hard lesson to learn that most prospects were lying. They never intended to call me back. Then I got religion. Not God religion. (Although I am totally into God) Sales religion. With some coaching, I realized that I had rights. ๐I prepared for the meeting. โฒ๏ธI gave the prospect my time, which is as valuable as the prospects ๐ตI shared valuable information, maybe even giving away too much information. This entitled me to an answer. So, at the end of my presentations, I began professionally asking for the business. And three things happened. ๐My confidence soared ๐ธI closed more deals โMost importantly, I flushed out the pretenders, which gave me more time to pursue other viable prospects. So, if you are a salesperson or professional responsible for business development, look in the mirror and have a heart-to-heart with yourself, askingโฆ "Am I honestly directly asking for the business?" If not, start now. If you don't, you will be relegated to the position of an order taker. Our mind starts racing with wild thoughts that put us into a state of panic. ๐ฐ"Oh, my God, what if I cannot get any new clients." ๐ฐ"What if this means I cannot pay my bills." ๐๏ธ"I am going to lose my house." Have you ever experienced this? If you have, you know how debilitating it can be. I am not embarrassed to say that I have and still do more often than I would like. I am not afraid to be vulnerable. It is a lot less stressful than keeping up the facade that everything is perfect. The mind is so powerful, it can put you into a tailspin if we are not careful. Here's a strategy I employ that helps me calm down and put things in perspective so I can get back to the business of doing what needs to be done. ๐๐ญ'๐ฌ ๐๐๐ฅ๐ฅ๐๐, ๐ฉ๐ฎ๐ญ๐ญ๐ข๐ง๐ ๐ฒ๐จ๐ฎ๐ซ ๐ญ๐ก๐จ๐ฎ๐ ๐ก๐ญ๐ฌ ๐จ๐ง ๐ญ๐ซ๐ข๐๐ฅ. I do this at least once per week. I take out a pad of paper and make two columns. On the left-hand side I put down all of the thoughts that stem from my panic, most of which are irrational. Then, I list on the right-hand side all the evidence supporting why the catastrophe I created in my mind would not likely come to fruition. Invariably, the evidence supporting why my catastrophizations are not valid. It is a very calming process. Without fun what is the purpose of life. It can't be all about work. Last night we got to spend the late afternoon/night on the town in Beverly Hills, visiting the iconic Polo Ralph Laurenยฎ store on famous Rodeo Drive. Topping things off at the The Grille in the Alley restaurant. My wife, Patricia and I have three children. Caitlin OโBrien, Tim, Jr. and McLean. One of the things we love to do as parents is spend dedicated one-one-one time with each child, doing what they love to do. Mac has always love dressing for success. He once wore a tuxedo to his elementary school Christmas. LOL. We knew he would love shopping for a new addition at one of the most famous store on one of the most famous street in America. We also knew he would love the idea of going to an iconic Beverly Hills restaurant. It was everything we could have hoped for. Mac loved every moment of our time together. But not nearly as much as we did spending time with him. We feel very blessed. Certainly many challenges in our lives over the years. I coach sports like I coach my business clients. I am direct, to the point, and tell the truth. In both cases my goal is the same. To make my players and clients better. By the eighth grade, it is time for the boys to learn how to compete. Now, I don't always speak to my 8th grade boys like I do to my clients. But I am still direct, sometimes loud, and when a player needs constructive criticism I do not hesitate to give it to him. I play no favorites. If my son needs it, he gets it too. My responsibility is to improve the boys' skills, attitude, and self-confidence to win games and compete for the championship. Just like it is my responsibility to help my clients get better so they earn more money. Don't get me wrong. I am equally loud with my encouragement. So, here's the situation. Last week we played a hard-fought game which we won. Apparently, my coaching was too much for one of the moms of a player on the opposing team. Unbeknownst to me, she approached the referees after the game and asked if there was a way to remove me because I yelled at the boys on my team too much. A few years ago, my feelings would have been hurt. I would have doubted myself. I would have approached the parents of my players and asked them for feedback. But this is my 6th year, and behind-the-back criticism made me laugh. So what is the point of all this? Simple. If you try to be all things to all people you will never be happy. You will spend one of your most valuable assets, your time, chasing your tail. Branding is not about pleasing as many people as possible. It is about earning the respect of your target audience. When it comes to your brand, there are three steps: โ Pick your brand โ๏ธBuild a bank account of personal brand equity ๐And never change your brand to appease a small minority of detractors You are not after being loved.
