How's your week been?

Me? 

I've been putting the finishing touches into my latest training for agency founders. 

And getting these linked and sync'ed (as they are loaded in through Gumroad).  

I've done a lot of putting together tiered products, but it still takes me longer than planned to check everything off for going live. 

You'd think by now I would allow for this, the extra time for 'dotting the i's and crossing the t's'. 

But, I'm happy they are done, loaded and ready to buy. 

And, having products ready to sell is only the halfway point. 

Next comes marketing them out.

And I can't wait to share them out to agency founders on my email list, and DM's, next week.

What Paul Jarvis Taught Me About Simple Launches That Actually Work

I’ve always admired Paul Jarvis. He's a writer, designer and the 'quietly' successful course creator behind Chimp Essentials.

I first came across his work Back in late 2015. While everyone else was obsessing over funnels and growth hacks, Paul spent a few weeks building something small and specific. 

A MailChimp course for freelancers (and small businesses) who wanted to use email properly.

I'd been doing email campaigns since 2007, and this was a resource I wished I'd had back then. 

From a launch point of view here's what stood out to me. 

First off, he didn’t overcomplicate it!

He wrote lessons, built a WordPress site, and planned a short, timed launch window. And used some network friends as affiliates to help increase the reach. 

However, that first launch brought in 560 paying students and around $55,000 in revenue - all from his own list. (With an estimanted 9% sold from affilates). 

Impressive is an understatement!

From what I've researched, he didn't rely on ads, or elaborate automations too. 
He just had one product, one audience (his email list), one launch week.

Over the next few years Chimp Essentials grew steadily.

His courses reached more than 13,000+ students.

And he used the same transparent approach each time:

Announce, Open, Deliver, Close, Update.

I think Paul’s real genius wasn’t just teaching Mailchimp. 

It was in proving that a smallish, trusted audience is enough.

I was a subscriber to his weekly 'Sunday Dispatches' email up until he stopped sending them. 

Just after Covid (2021) he co-founded Fathom Analytics.

A privacy-first analytics company. And I noticed he'd stepped away from his courses. 

But that single product had already done its job in my eyes. As it built his independence, and proved that small can be sustainable.

This week I’m borrowing that same approach for my own launch. 

Risk Management for Agencies - a short, focused training (with three tiers) on Gumroad.

I’ll run a 5–6 day email sequence (to a smallish list I've cultivated over the past few years). 

Add a meaningful bonus to help increase the ROI of the product training. 

And I'll work with a few networked friends to share it with their agency lists as part of a giveaway I'm running in October. 

My goal isn’t viral reach. 

It’s to prove (like Paul did) that small, focused launches can compound.

The power of building a story around a launch. 

When you’re launching something new, one of the hardest parts isn’t writing the emails or building the landing page.

It’s choosing the story to tell.

When I think of launch emails that tell stories that I've found powerful, I have to go back to the 2008-2010's. 

There were loads of great marketing people who could cut through the email inbox sludge. But one guy in particular stood out more than others for me. 

Travis Sago (of 'Bum Marketing Method' fame). 

He was a standout email and content marketer for me, when I was learning to build in email as a channel. 

In fact, I’ve been following Travis Sago’s approach to launching this week - where each promotional email has a clear theme or metaphor that ties everything together. 

Something that makes people feel the idea, not just read about it.

For my Risk Management for Agencies training launch this week, I adapted from his 6-email sequence. Which all hangs around a theme. 

I initially started with The Fire Drill - the idea that every business needs to practise what to do before a crisis hits. 

It felt it could give the launch a narrative people could relate to = walking through the steps before the fire starts. So they know what to do next time. 

Very apt for the training around risk and how to find, and manage them. 

But the truth is… there are loads of other angles that would fit just as well. 

Themes like: 

- Always being too busy to fix the cracks. 
- The simplicity of systems that actually get done. 
-  Agency owners being great problem solvers for others, but forgetting to do it for themselves.

And that’s the thing - you can launch again and again with new stories. Each one reaches different people in a different headspace.

For a product like mine - something that's new and one-of-a-kind for agencies - that’s probably the long game I need to take. 

Sharing different stories, around the same mission. Which is 'Helping agency owners build more resilient, calmer businesses that don’t crumble when things go wrong'.

It's early days. But thought I'd share this if you're also promoting or launching products this year. 

But the strategies used in the hey-day of email (2008-2010) are still hyper relevant to today.

It’s chaos.
And that’s normal.

The problem?

When you try to fix it with yet another platform, it just adds more complexity.

So when I built my risk management process specifically for agencies, I decided to go the other way.

I made it simple.

✅ A spreadsheet that links to your existing tools.

You'll never pull all your information into one platform. I like the way you can add links across all drives and resources into cells and comments. Makes it far easier as a point of coordination. 


✅ A dashboard that shows what needs attention.

This is what most tools miss. Adding in ways to measure missing links, time since last updates, who's across what tasks - allows you to build insights into your business. And quick-to-view dashboards are a must for most agencies I know. 


✅ A system everyone can actually use - because everyone already knows how.

I've seen loads of time wasted with people trying to onboard themselves - then the rest of the team. Spreadsheets are pretty much universal - meaning most people know intuitively how to work with them. This was a game changer in getting people to work with a new process - and avoiding the headaches new systems create. 

My point being:

'Simple systems get done.
Complex ones get ignored.'

And that’s the biggest lesson I’ve learned from two decades in and around agencies.

My landing page is live (but this post isn’t about selling it)
It’s about how I built it.

Over the last few weeks, I’ve been putting a landing page together. 

This is for the Risk Managemeent For Agencies training (launched today!). 

Some game changing advice I got was 

'Build your landing page like a presentation'. 

This makes sure you get the order in place to create the right narrative for first-time viewers. 

Something great presenations do!

This can get overlooked in a landing page - depending on what you're offering - as there's lots of information that you need to include. 

Here’s the simple framework I followed:

1️⃣ Start with the reason.
Open with the real problem your product or training solves — not features, but the pain people feel before they find you.

2️⃣ Build trust.
Show experience, testimonials, or credibility signals - that make people believe your solution works. I've got a short about me, and deeper content around the challenges of agency growth. 

3️⃣ Share your ‘why’.
Explain the method or philosophy behind your product - the thing that makes it different from everything else out there. Something I think can be overlooked sometimes. 

4️⃣ Lay out the options.
Make it easy for people to choose the right level of support (I created three tiers: Starter, Pro, and Premium - each one hosted on Gumroad, but linked on the landing page).

5️⃣ Answer questions.
Anticipate doubts, and address them directly in an FAQ - this part alone builds a lot of confidence. 

6️⃣ Add evidence.
Stories, examples, even screenshots of real results - people trust what they can see. 

PUTTING THE PRESENTATION TO THE TEST:

I built the presentation in Google Slides, as you can see from this post's video. I did practice the talk through a few times to myself to refine the page. 

The page in Carrd - a platform I've used before. But most templates and page builders offer 'blocks' that mirror the presentation pages. 

It's often too easy to jump into the page builder first. I know I do!

But does your page content make sense if it were presenting off site? 
Like a powerpoint deck?

Next steps for me:
1. Emails I'm sending out to my subscribers are in full swing. 
2. I've got a limited time bonus of extra training and resources for anyone who purchases before Friday 2pm gets this - no matter what option they choose. 
3. Developing a network promotion campaign for next week. 

For now, the landing page is live, once I get some data insights on how well it's converting I can develop it from there.

If you ever wanted to sabotage your agency, here’s how to do it:

Keep growing.
Keep saying yes.
Keep firefighting and assuming next week will be calmer.
Keep putting off how you manage the risks in your operations. 

That’s how most agencies collapse - not from one big crisis, but a slow build-up of tiny ones nobody saw coming.

But here’s the interesting bit…You can use sabotage to grow your agency.

One of the best exercises I run with teams is something I call a Sabotage Session.

We flip the question:

“If I wanted to kill this agency in 1–2 months, how would I do it?”

People laugh at first.
Then the room goes quiet.
Because the answers are brutally honest.

You find weak points in your business model, your client dependencies, your team setup - the stuff nobody talks about until it’s too late.

(But it's also the stuff everyone knows is there)

And when you capture those risks properly, you can plan around them.

That’s what risk management really is - not fear or red tape, but foresight.

You can’t protect what you haven’t seen yet.
