The results are in and the report tells us that the UK’s four-day week pilot was a huge success! 🎉
 
Involving 61 companies and around 2,900 workers, this is the world’s largest four-day week trial to date. 
 
 Quick facts:

🤸‍♂️ 92% of the participating employers are sticking with the four-day week
 
 🤸‍♂️ Company revenue rose by 1.4% on average
 
 🤸‍♂️ 96% of workers prefer the four-day week
 
 🤸‍♂️ Employee stress levels dropped by 39%
 
 🤸‍♂️ Employee burnout rates fell by 71%
 
 🤸‍♂️ 54% of workers felt a reduction in negative emotions
 
 🤸‍♂️60% of employees with care responsibilities saw an improvement to their work-life balance, and 62% reported a positive impact to their social lives
 
 🤸‍♂️ 48% of employees feel more satisfied than when they first started
 
 🤸‍♂️ Sick days plummeted by 65%
 
 🤸‍♂️ Staff resignations dropped by 57%

By the end of the trial, 46% of workers said they’d only accept a five-day week job if they received a pay increase, and 15% said that no amount of money could entice them return to a five-day schedule.
 
Hard as some will most definitely try, you simply can’t argue with those stats! And for those who do wish to air their concerns, there are a couple of things worth noting first:
 
 👉 One size doesn’t fit all, which is why participating firms designed a policy tailored to factors such as their industry, organisational challenges, departmental structures, and company culture.
 
 This means a variety of four-day weeks were created, from the classic ‘Friday off’ model, to alternative structures like ‘staggered’, ‘decentralised’, ‘annualised’, and ‘conditional’.
 
 👉 To avoid any biased data, companies who took part come from a range of sectors and vary in size and headcount.

The most effective teams have regular, intense debates. The ability to disagree without causing offense is a crucial precondition for good communication and problem-solving, according to Adrian Gostick and Chester Elton. Great leaders don’t encourage their team members to come to agreements quickly; as a matter of fact, they help their teams disagree–productively.

No one will ever have all the correct answers, and ultimately, you will make better decisions as a leader by having diverse people and views on your team. When teammates have an opportunity to challenge each other, as long as the discussions are respectful and everyone gets a chance to contribute equally, most people thrive on this kind of debate, finding it intellectually stimulating and helpful for unearthing the best solutions.

Building a team with conflicting world views or differing opinions of your industry will push you to think critically – even more so than you may have in the past. If you want to build a great company, permit your team to disagree with you and listen to their feedback because it’s not about you; it’s all about providing the best service and products that make a difference in the lives of the people you are entrusted to serve.

There are many litmus tests for great leaders, but if you really want to know if any leader is inspirational, look at those around them. Are they growing and becoming better leaders themselves? Or are you planning your career progression more than your team members?

According to Skye Schooley, if you look around and see that your team members need to be more engaged and active in their work, it may be time to reassess and reform your strategies. 

 If a person in a leadership position views their role as "just a job," it will show. To be an effective leader, you must have that desire within to help people become the very best version of themselves. If in your heart you feel leadership is your destiny and you want to make a difference in this world, then you are certainly starting from the right place and on the road to becoming a great leader.

No one can build and sustain a great company if no trust exists. Recruiting the best people and tying their hands by not giving them the freedom to perform makes no sense. Great leaders know that the soul of their business is their team, and they must allow and trust their team to produce their very best work; that's why you recruited them in the first place.

I have witnessed people cc their manager on everything occurring in their department. For example, why, for the love of God, is any manager interested in a routine interaction between two colleagues? It makes no sense at all.

If you want to be a leader, give your team the space to work, break down those silos and create an environment free from the impediments of toxicity and witness significant growth in your company but, more importantly, in your team.
