Yes cash flow is still king. But so is distribution.

This business is not unlike the airline or hotel business. You need to bring your cost per destination down. How do you do this? By having many products.

I also question the wisdom of a small economy like Malaysia having so many hypermarkets and big chain stores. It limits the choices available for the consumer.

Did it move fast or what? 

It was website building. It was Yahoo. It was mobile Then Google. It was not mobile. Then blogging. It was the iPhone. Now social media. It never ends...

But this is what I discovered. 

The net is very noisy. But at the end of it all, it's all about targeted audiences. 

To snatch the attention of the audience who cares about you and what you sell.

Grab the audience and it's just about moving the bar slightly higher, and...

You've got your customer. Why?

Service standards are generally low. Companies and sales people don't pay forward anymore. They want instant gratification....

Your future "customers" are just dying to ditch their current "service provider" for anything remotely better. 

If you just pay forward while giving your fullest possible quantity and best possible quality of service, you'll get them.

Yes a far cry from my finance background. But stockbroking was becoming very stale for me and the fund management industry was still in its infancy.

What did I take away from this venture?

I fell in love with the technology. A no-no.

I was loyal to the company I was representing. A no-no.

I didn't diversify sufficiently in my product base. Another no-no.

But what did I really learn on the positive side.

I learned how to implement big projects. I experienced and hence understood the not so conceptual payment risks and delivery risks.

An eye opener for me here was KLMutual, the unit trust company. From here I understood the power of distribution to acquire sales.

I learned that while cash flow is KING, for any business to also succeed you need great distribution channels to funnel sales.

The rocky days of the Malaysian stock market boom.

Perhaps it was the last we will ever see. The glorious 2 years. A period where the experience of greed and fear was implanted into the lives of many. 

As an institutional dealer I was lucky to witness the collapse of our economy without being a real victim.

The company, part of the Hong Leong group, was an upstart in the stockbroking industry. And it suited me fine.  At the time, Zalik Securities had the Smaller Companies Handbook - it's a tight niche in the market place. Zalik's strengths from the foreign fund managers' point of view was the ability to go the extra mile in trying to service their clients.  The weakness of the Malaysian stockbroking industry was it's heavy concentration on European, and Asian investment houses.   A colleague and I set about setting the American desk. That meant hours of 9pm to 2am.  The great payback was the lack of competition and the ability to do huge share placements - bigger than the more established Barings, Jardines and Smith New Courts. Great satisfaction.

What did I take away from this experience?

I learned from Lim Kian Onn that tenacity, persistence, innovation and sheer guts will always win the day.

I also learned the humble salesman was the most important person in a company. No salesman, no sales, no company.

"Trust me"… is a Zalik boys inside joke.

   You should never feel overwhelmed by information about various investment products and their features. Explanations should be clear with no misunderstanding.

   A valid fear - being mislead into an investment with exaggerated potential returns that's unsuitable to your goals and risk tolerance. 

3. Fear of Hidden Costs 

	Investment products sold to you by banks usually have embedded a price differential the bank makes. It is never disclosed to you. 

4. Fear of Losing Money

   It's understandable the fear of losing money. The fear is magnified if you aren’t informed the associated risks or the suitability of the investment product as per your goals. 

5. Fear of Lack of Flexibility 

   What happens when circumstances change? Most complicated sophisticated investor products are rigid in the maturity period. The penalties for breaching terms can be great.
