In any given industry, some people struggle to get enough customers, while others have more than they can handle. Similarly, in any given market, some companies chase for clients, while others select who they want to work with and turn away the rest. What sets the latter groups apart?

In January 2013, I e-mailed clients in Sydney, Australia, saying, “We have sold too many tickets for the event that you’ve booked for. The venue holds 700 people, and we’re now forming a waiting list. If you’d like to sell your ticket back to us, we’ll pay you DOUBLE what you paid for it.” This wasn’t a joke, gimmick, or ploy. Yesterday, I heard about a corporate that has stopped using the word “brainstorming session” because it might be triggering and insensitive to people with mental health issues. 

So many questions… 
- if someone can’t handle hearing the word “brainstorming” (used in context) are they fit to be at work? 
- what exactly is the triggering part about the word brainstorming? Can we not mention brains? An epilepsy charity polled its members to see if they had an issue with the word and virtually none of them had even considered it a problem. 
- why on earth are we letting office juniors come up with these insane rules? For all of history, juniors learn what’s acceptable from more senior people. Why has that changed? Why are senior team members not telling these brats to get a grip. 
- how is a company going to have any actual ideas if they are putting this much energy into policing the way you can talk about having ideas?

Am I missing the point on this? Or do you think the world of work has gone kooky? Can I say kooky? 

There's a fun story behind how they made Top Gun...

Originally, they were going to use model planes and ships like they did to film Star Wars.

Top Gun didn't have a huge budget so were pretty limited on what they could get their hands on.

Thankfully, someone had the bright idea to reach out to the navy anyway and see if they could borrow some equipment.

When they spoke to the admiral of the Navy, it turns out that they were trying to recruit more people, and being featured in a Hollywood movie was the perfect opportunity for them.

They agreed to let them use their planes and ships to film Top Gun, and the rest is history.

It was the perfect partnership as both parties massively benefitted...

The US Navy saw their recruitment rates increase by a massive 500% in the year following the film’s release.

Despite having a modest production budget of $15 million, Top Gun defied expectations, grossing over $356 million worldwide upon its release.

There's two things you can take from this...

1. Somebody woke up this morning with the resources you want.

2. You have to be willing to pick up the phone and ask.

How I would start a business if I had:

Prepare for some honest truths...

I (accidentally) raised $250,000 for a startup...

We all know that launching a new business is hard work.

This is why I'm always reluctant to start anything new unless we have clear evidence and data that it's going to be successful.

Around 8 months ago, we got that data.

Here are the exact 5 steps we took to raise $250,000 for a new startup. This includes:

- How we tested the idea to ensure this was worth pursuing 
- What surprising data we gathered that gave us vital insights into pricing
- How we raised investment of $250K (and how we could have raised more)
- What feedback we gathered to improve the product 
- How we hit $100K ARR when we launched (and this was just a soft launch)

I hope you find this case study useful. I wanted to be as transparent as possible so you can understand exactly how you could go from an initial idea right through to successful launch.

The only person who deserves to make money from an idea is the person who executes it, not the person who thinks it up. 

That's why one of the most important things you can do when you’re starting a business is to get your ideas out there. 

Get feedback from mentors and successful entrepreneurs.

Test the waters with waiting lists, questionnaires and online discussion groups.

When I tell people this, sometimes they tell me they don’t want to do that - because they’re worried someone will steal their idea before they implement it.

Here’s the thing: your ideas aren’t worth anything.

Anyone can come up with the idea for the world's tallest building, or a robot that cleans your house, or a holiday to the moon. Anyone can have ideas about how to improve a marketing campaign, hire A-players or get an investor.   

However, the only people who will make any money from ideas are the people who go out, test the market, build, iterate, package, sell and ship. 

Get your ideas out of your head and into the market. It’s the only way to find out what they are worth.

7 counterintuitive ideas for early-stage businesses... 

1. Spending money, not saving it, is crucial. Small businesses need to invest in marketing, hiring talent, and other growth drivers. Effective spending leads to growth.

2. Forget about profitability in the early stages. Revenue is more important. The saying "Revenue is vanity, profit is sanity" is sometimes true, but for small businesses, you need to boost revenue first to cover fixed costs and hire the right team.

3. Cash at bank matters more than accurate record-keeping. It's easy to get bogged down in detailed reports, but when you're growing fast, keeping an eye on cash at bank flow ensures stability and survival.

4. Band-aid solutions can be better than well-thought-out systems. While detailed systems are good, in the early days, you need quick fixes to keep things moving. Focus on what's working rather than perfecting processes.

5. Brochures are more effective than websites for new businesses. When you're just starting, few people know you exist, so reaching out with a well-designed brochure can make more impact than a flashy website.

6. Your personal brand can matter more than your business brand. Customers trust people, not faceless corporations. Building a strong personal brand helps to connect with your audience and win their trust.

7. Finally, forget about passive income and automation when you're starting. The best entrepreneurs aren't afraid to get their hands dirty. Focus on the non-scalable tasks that build relationships and generate revenue before automating processes.

Remember, these ideas aren't just about taking shortcuts; they're about recognising that sometimes, doing the unexpected can lead to growth.

Which one of these rings true for you?

The best ratio of content creation to content promotion is 1:5. 

This means for every dollar you spend on creating content, you should be spending $5 on promoting that content. 

For every hour you spend creating content, you should be spending 5hours promoting that content. 

Most entrepreneurs create great content but don't promote it enough. My observation is that people who have a small amount of great content and promote it really well perform better than those who constantly produce more, but don't push it out there.  

The implication of this: 

- You'd be better off having 6 great episodes of a podcast and really promoting them well instead of producing hundreds of episodes with very little promotion. 
- You'd be better off writing a really great blog full of stories, research and data and then promoting it far and wide instead of writing 5 blogs and just posting them once. 
- Your content from years ago could probably be freshened up and promoted. 
- You're probably sitting on enough content to double your business already. Go back through your archives and look for your best early work and refresh it.  

How to promote your content better: 

- post a version of all content on the big 5 platforms (Twitter, Youtube, Facebook, Instagram, Linkedin) 
- remember to use the multiple sharing styles on each platform (reels, posts, lives, etc)
- create videos, text, image, and audio versions of each piece of top content and share them across various platforms
- ask others to share it. 
- run some ads to it. 
- make sure your content has a call to action at the end (eg: "want to implement this idea? start by taking the scorecard"
- repromote your content from a month/a quarter ago. 
- email or DM key individuals about your content. 
- make sure your content has hashtags to link it to other conversations. 
- use a content scheduling tool
- create content with the intention of it being used in multiple places for extended lengths of time. 
- test 2-4 versions of the headline for your content to see which gets the best results.
