4 years ago I was a work- and alcoholic who lost €40K.

I've been active on LinkedIn ever since 2020.

Back then, I used it more as a lead-gen platform by sending out automated connection requests.

A numbers game.

Some conversations.
Little results.

➡️ In July 2023 I decided to double down on the platform by combining content AND outreach.

I hope to give you some value by sharing my activities and results with you.

In the past 8 months, I have:

• Hit my record month
• Connected with 2000 new people
• Grew my following with 2500 people

Also I:

• Had 34 impressions on my worst post
• Had 10.000 impressions on my best post

Looking back a lot has happened.

A lot of growth.

But those are just the numbers.

Let me share my real findings and experiences here:

1️⃣ 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗽𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗹𝗲 𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗽𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝘀𝘂𝗽𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲.
-> When you give love and support, you get love and support back.

2️⃣ 𝗧𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗮𝗹𝗴𝗼𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗵𝗺 𝗶𝘀 (𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗹𝗹) 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗺𝗼𝘀𝘁 𝗿𝗲𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴.
-> Changes have been made in the algorithm. Still there is a lot of potential to get a lot of impressions. Personal posts perform well in particular.

3️⃣ 𝗖𝗼𝗽𝘆𝘄𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝗯𝗲 𝗮 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗻𝗲𝘄 𝘀𝗸𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝘁𝗼 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗻.
-> Challeging and sometimes frustrating in the beginning. It gets easier with the right systems and practice.

4️⃣ 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗻𝘁 & 𝗢𝘂𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗰𝗵 = 𝗞𝗶𝗻𝗴
-> You can try one or the other. But you'll simply close more deals with both.

Content = Credibility.
Outreach = Conversations

5️⃣ 𝗚𝗲𝘁 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗳𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗮𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗹𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝗽𝗹𝗮𝗰𝗲
-> To make the most of your efforts: spend proper time on your headline, banner and profile before actively posting.

97% of people make this mistake on LinkedIn

I've had to learn it the hard way, but... 

More content ≠ More success.

Sure, I understand the power copywriting holds. 

But let's get real — without knowing how to convert, even the finest writing is just words on a screen.

And here’s the reality many don't talk about:

Copywriting won't pay your bills, closing deals will.

Of course, copywriting has its place on LinkedIn, but without sales you'll get stuck focusing on likes & views.

And I’ve been there — it wasn’t pretty.

I understood that I needed more than copywriting to pay my bills, I needed to learn how to sell. 

I stopped depending on just my posts to convert.

And I learnt how to:

- Talk to people in the DMs
- Create urgency and FOMO
- Pitch without sounding salesy
- Get people to say "yes" for a call
- Follow-up without sounding too pushy
- Reach out to people and get them to reply
- Look at selling from a different lens (helping)
- Get people to open up about their pain points
- Create a lead gen system that gets me warm leads
- Create a non-salesy sales system to close the leads

I needed to get to a point where I could sell, because...

Copywriting without sales, is like owning a car without knowing how to drive — you will always be dependent on someone (referrals) to drive you somewhere.

The 4 biggest mistakes I see LinkedIn users make.

(And how to win on LinkedIn by avoiding them.)

By now, it's no secret that LinkedIn is an outstanding platform for lead generation.

Yet, people haven’t begun to use its full potential,
And after being active on the platform for 4 years...

These are the 4 biggest mistakes that I see:

👋 𝗠𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗸𝗲 𝟭: 𝗧𝗵𝗲𝘆 𝗱𝗼𝗻'𝘁 𝗽𝗼𝘀𝘁 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗻𝘁.

Less than 5% of people post content on LinkedIn...
And this is THE biggest mistake.

Some entrepreneurs use LinkedIn just for outreach or acquisition, which is actually a waste of time.

When you post content consistently, you organically appear in your target audience's feed.

👋 𝗠𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗸𝗲 𝟮: 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝘆 𝗽𝗼𝘀𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆 𝗴𝗼𝗼𝗱.

Posting only dry and non-personal content, means you miss out on engagement.

Why? because your post doesn't resonate well with the audience, and therefore, it doesn't reach many people.

To solve the 'reach' issue, it's smart to write content with mass appeal. This is important in combination with the next mistake:

👋 𝗠𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗸𝗲 𝟯: 𝗧𝗵𝗲𝘆 𝗱𝗼𝗻'𝘁 𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝗮 𝗴𝗼𝗼𝗱 𝗵𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗲.

We need 'reach' for people to read your headline, which ensures that your target audience clicks through to your profile.

A bad headline results in fewer leads.

(The headline is the piece of text under your name; for me, it's "I make coaches win clients on LinkedIn, without spending a dime on ads")

👋 𝗠𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗸𝗲 𝟰: 𝗡𝗼𝘁 𝗳𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗼𝘄𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘂𝗽 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗺 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗱𝘀 𝗾𝘂𝗶𝗰𝗸𝗹𝘆.

Honestly, I never thought I’d post this on LinkedIn…

The story about how ayahuasca gave me a successful business.

It was during my sabbatical in Mexico, Tulum early 2022. I had just quit my freelancing job and had no idea what my next move was going to be.

In the first week, I met a bunch of young entrepreneurs doing crazy revenue numbers via 'Dropshipping' (buying cheap stuff from China and selling it online). 

Motivated by the money, I decided that this was going to be my new path.

• I hired a mentor
• I created my Shopify store
• Consulted my business coach
• Started searching products on Alibaba

I went ALL IN.

I think it was at an entrepreneurial meetup when I first heard of the phrase “plant medicine”. A term used for plant-based psychedelic substances”.

Ayahuasca was supposed to be the ultimate plant medicine. 

An 8-hour out-of-body experience with extremely strong visuals, combined with several hours of 'purging' (e.g., puking).

Hah –
I was far from convinced. 

Only after I saw the changed, bright look in the eyes of my travel partner who just came back from an ayahuasca retreat, I decided to give it a try. 

One month later, I found myself sitting in front of the Shaman. 

Sweat dripping down my back.
Looking at him, blowing smoke into my cup and saying his prayers.  

I can still feel the licorice-like substance going down my throat. 

It's been two year since then.

Still I haven’t been able to find the words to describe the 8 hours that followed. 

But there was 𝗢𝗡𝗘 profound lesson that changed the course of my life. 

In this 'game' called life that we are playing:

• Money is just a fraction of it all.
• Fulfilling your own needs, is just a fraction of it all.

Serving others in their journey is where your true purpose lies. Focusing on something greater than your bank account or ego is where you'll find fulfillment.

Right after the ceremony, I quit my dropshipping business.

In the period that followed, I met many inspiring entrepreneurs who were struggling with their marketing and getting in consistent leads and sales. 

Two months after my ceremony, I founded ScaleUp.

And for over 2 years now, I've been helping coaches and service providers to build their business online, get consistent leads and realise their dreams.

Using my decade of marketing experience no longer for 'the big brands'.

But for the real change-makers.

I'll admit, the connection wasn't immediate.

At first, it was all about the adrenaline.

But little did the 15y/o Joeri stepping onto the Muay Thai mat for the first time know, he would be learning his first business lesson too.

In Muay Thai, every move...

From a jab to a front kick — is part of your strategy.

You Assess → Plan → and Execute.

Business operates on the same principle.

I only connected the dots when I started my own business.

BUT...

In business, every product launch, marketing campaign,
or sales pitch must be strategically planned and executed.

— You don't launch when your audience is cold
— You don't DM without a clear framework
— You don't post without a plan

Even then, despite the near-perfect strategy...

Sometimes you will still get knocked down.
And that's okay, you Rise → Rinse → Repeat.

Each setback you face, teaches and toughens you.

I learned that both in sports and business
↳ You need a strategy before you strike.

You also need to develop a mindset to:

Get up → Reflect → Go again → And again → And Again.

And that my friend, is the most crucial connection I made.

5 changes I'd make when starting my business again.

2019.

That was the year when I started my journey as a rookie entrepreneur. 

Looking back, it taught me valuable lessons through painful mistakes.

With this post I wish to inspire just one person who is pursuing his/her dream.

𝟭. 𝗕𝘂𝗶𝗹𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗺𝘆 𝗮𝘂𝗱𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗳𝗶𝗿𝘀𝘁
I would no longer waste months on creating a course, a website, a funnel etc. 

I would focus on building my brand and my audience via organic marketing & sales. 

--> Have people to sell to 

𝟮. 𝗣𝗮𝘆 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗽𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗹𝗲'𝘀 𝗺𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗸𝗲𝘀
I would spend at least €5K in hiring marketing and sales professionals that can teach me how it’s done and learn from their mistakes. 

--> Decrease my learning time 

𝟯. 𝗛𝗶𝗴𝗵 𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗸𝗲𝘁 𝗼𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗿
I would create one 1-1 offer that I could sell for a high-ticket price incl. a good guarantee. 

--> Focus on cash flow

𝟰. 𝗚𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗯𝗲𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝗜'𝗱 𝗮𝘀𝗸
I would focus on giving as much value as I could via workshops, free training videos and other resources so that people see my expertise. 

--> Build credibility

𝟱. 𝗟𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗻 𝗼𝗻𝗹𝘆 𝘃𝗮𝗹𝘂𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝘀𝗸𝗶𝗹𝗹𝘀 
I would go all in on learning copy writing, sales and creating an irresistible offer. 

--> Optimize my productivity

And I'd tell myself this: 

If you want to stand out from the crowd, you got to stop looking for the short-cuts.

Focusing on audience building and providing value sets you apart by doing what others don't.
