Giving your new sign ups a quick win isn’t about showing off your fancy features. It’s actually about a feeling. Done right, users experience an “Omg, this really works!” moment that keeps them moving forward. Done wrong, it’s just another step in a frustrating onboarding that kills momentum before it even starts. And in the critical First 14 time period, momentum is everything. In today’s carousel, I’m looking at how Airtable and monday.com approach the first win, and sharing what you can learn. --- Follow me, Katie Deloso 🍭, for daily stories, tips and tricks for designing a product that sticks in the first 14 days. #first14 #onboarding #productdesign #ux
What’s your favorite moment in the your customer's journey from awareness ➡️ adoption? I think mine is when a new user pauses and thinks, “Wait… this really works. I love this.” That’s what I call the Keystone Moment, the turning point where a hesitant user becomes a believer. ✅ Nail it, and they commit. ❌ Miss it, and they churn. The thing is, your sign ups are constantly asking themselves if your solution is worth it. Your Keystone Moment needs to answer that question with a resounding yes. So find it. Strengthen it. Make it impossible to miss. 👇 In today’s carousel I’m showing you how HubSpot does it. --- Follow me, Katie Deloso 🍭, for daily stories, tips and tricks for designing a product that sticks in the first 14 days. #first14 #onboarding #productdesign #ux
If Netflix auto-played movies with zero input from you, you’d unsubscribe. If autocorrect changed your sentence but didn’t let you undo or edit the fix, you’d get really annoyed. And if Google Search gave you wildly different results every single time for the same exact query, you’d stop trusting it. Yet, this is essentially what many AI products and features do: - Here’s your result. [Please don’t ask why.] - I made changes for you. [Just trust me.] - Regenerate if you don’t like it. [No adjustments allowed.] That kind of thing might feel magical in a demo, but in real workflows, users don’t want magic. They want control. If they don’t understand how AI works… If they can’t adjust the output when it’s off… If they feel like AI is making too many decisions for them… They’ll stop using it and churn within the first 14 days. In today’s carousel, I’m showing you how to make sure users feel the sense of control they crave when it comes to AI. --- Follow me, Katie Deloso 🍭, for stories, tips and tricks for designing a product that sticks in the first 14 days. #first14 #onboarding #productdesign #ux
Your onboarding demo can either pull users in fast, or it can cause them to Instachurn before they ever finish onboarding. Done right, interactive demos can create clarity, confidence, and curiosity, guiding users seamlessly from interest to action. Key word: Interactive. The worst demos hijack the screen, forcing users through a rigid walkthrough before they can explore. Almost as bad? Long-winded videos that make users passively sit and watch. That’s a good way to confuse, overwhelm, and bore users into bouncing. In today’s carousel, I’m sharing the dos and don’t of demos, as well as some products that get it right. --- Follow me, Katie Deloso 🍭, for daily stories, tips and tricks for designing a product that sticks in the first 14 days. #first14 #onboarding #productdesign #ux
How many "New Year, New Me" resolutions have you made in your life, only to find yourself doing exactly the same things before January is over? What about all those times you said "I should really start meal prepping” … while ordering takeout for the third time that week? That's not just procrastination. You’re not lazy, and you’re not a failure. That's your brain's powerful resistance to change—even when staying put is costing you money and time. It's called the Status Quo Bias—our brain's tendency to stick with current situations, even when alternatives could benefit us more. This is exactly why those first 14 minutes with your product are so crucial. Your users' brains are wired to retreat to their familiar tools and workflows, even if those solutions are frustrating them. Dropbox understood this brilliantly in their early days. Rather than asking users to completely change their workflow, they simply added a special folder to users' existing file system. Same familiar desktop, just with magical syncing powers. And look—you're experiencing Status Quo Bias right now reading this post. Part of you wants to stick with your current onboarding approach because, hey, it's kind of working. Sort of. But are you really hitting those growth targets? Want to learn how to help users overcome this psychological barrier in those critical first moments?
