Why should we believe this??

Here's another perfect example of why we have to be critical thinkers.

At first glance, something like this looks incredible right? 

One workout reduces cancer growth by 30%.. you want to believe it, you want it to be true. And in some ways, it is true. There’s real research behind it. 

But the whole story is a little more complicated.

This is why context is so incredibly important.

Although there is truth here, the reality is the effect was only found in a lab dish, with blood from breast cancer survivors after exercise, applied directly to cancer cells. 

That’s a far cry from saying a single workout cures or even treats cancer. 

The science is hopeful, but the headline skips the context.

This doesn't take away from the potential and what this could mean, but it also isn't a slam dunk black and white statement the way this graphic suggests.

And isn’t that exactly what so much of the internet does? 

Many times is can be either completely false, totally void of context, or true without the nuance. 

Plus there's our interpretation of what we see and hear.

We don’t always see or hear things as they are.. we many times see or hear them as WE are.

Confirmation bias pulls us toward what we already want to believe. 

That’s why so many of us end up upset, confused, or misled. It’s not always the information that’s broken, sometimes it’s the filter we bring to it.

So what do we do with that? 

We train the same way we would for anything else that matters. 

Build stronger filters. 

Sharpen our thinking. 

And yes, exercise.. because while one workout might not cure cancer, it will cure the excuses we tell ourselves.

Critical thinking is a muscle too. 

Train it well.
