In my youth I was considered to be a bit of an underachiever. Everybody told me that I had so much potential, so why didn't I do as well as expected in my exams? Why was I unable to secure a place at University? Why couldn't I follow the pathway into a profession as I was expected to? The answers are surprising ... There are 2 reasons. One was down to my attitude. I didn’t take learning seriously, & thought that I could get by on my considerable wits & innate abilities alone. I was wrong. The other reason seemed to lie in the nature of the brain. I was taught to believe, based on the available science at the time, that once you hit your early 20s, learning was fixed for life. Adults were not capable of learning, I was told. So I believed that it would become progressively harder & harder to learn new skills. But that didn't seem to be true. I found that my interest in learning actually increased as I got older. Well, thanks to modern brain research, we now know why. It's not true that adults find learning harder. All of us can continue to learn, all through our lives. We just need the determination & motivation to do so. As I began to understand how easy it is to keep upgrading your knowledge, understanding, skills & habits, I've become more & more passionate about learning. I became a lifelong learner myself, always asking what's new, how can I think & behave differently, what else can I learn? That's why, all through my life, whatever my job title has been, I have always gravitated towards learning & development. The key to success in every domain, it seems to me, is the ability to continue to learn & develop throughout your life. This no doubt explains why I have spent the last 24 years immersed in the world of freelance corporate training. both as a trainer myself, & as a guide & mentor to other freelance trainers & owners of training businesses. My calling in life is to help other people to be more successful through helping them to gain new skills, new behaviours, & new ways of thinking. Today, I am thrilled to be able to to spend my time working with freelance trainers who are serious about growing their businesses & helping them to flourish & thrive in an overcrowded, noisy market. I also delight in partnering with people in my network to deliver the very highest quality training programs to their clients & mine. When I'm not helping other people to reach their goals, you'll find me cooking up something amazing in the kitchen, making music badly but with incredible enthusiasm, or at a gig or a festival with a bunch of mates.
