Someone insults you on stage.

What do you do?

This is what happened to the late Steve Jobs.

He wasn’t born a great communicator. His first TV interview made him so nervous that he thought he would throw up.

Fast-forward twenty years and he had become a master communicator thanks to practice and coaching.

What happened? A man in the audience said: 😳

“On several accounts you discussed you have no idea what you are talking about… What have you personally been doing over the last 7 years?”

Check out Steve Jobs’ masterful insult response. 🧨

Why does it work?

1) First he pulls the audience on his side with a humorous truism (“you can please some of the people some of the time …”).

2) He partly agrees with the audience member, thereby taking the wind out of his sails.

3) He then uses the answer-bridge-communicate (ABC) technique to reframe the debate to discuss his vision, making the accuser look petty.

4) He concludes with a statement that the audience agrees with: "put the customer first and work backwards to the technology."

What does he not do? Answer the question directly and justify what he did.

Instead, he: uses humor, bridging, reframing, and concludes with a statement that has the audience nodding.

Wasting hours each week clarifying the same things?

You can fix that with one simple move:

Give your team a “How to Work With Me” guide.

Every leader should share their personal communication guidelines with their team, and the new year is a great time to start.

I recommend this power move to all my CEO coaching clients. If you don’t do it, you leave your team guessing.

The result: mutual frustration, wasted time, mediocrity.  

Don’t be that leader. Your team can’t read your mind. Just tell them what you need from them once and for all. 

Frame it right: “We all want more impact in less time. This document helps us achieve it.” 

Now steal my blueprint and adapt it as necessary:

1/ Keep it short, simple, and put the audience first.
↳Most memos, messages and briefings are too long and complicated.  
↳ Don’t aim for completeness, aim for clarity.

2/ Contact me on these channels 
↳ For day-to-day communication, I prefer to use (channels) 
↳ Contact me at (times). 

3/ Start with the key message
↳ Every document or message must begin with a clear, one-sentence headline.
↳ End with the ask or next steps. 

4/ Use spoken English
↳ Write in spoken, not written, English. 
↳ Short, direct sentences. Active voice. 
↳ No bureaucratic phrasing or jargon. 

5/ Follow clear communication structures
↳Speeches and presentations should follow proven structures like Vision - Commitment - Execution. 
↳ Do not produce lists of disconnected points.

6/ Provide bullet points for delivery
↳ Don’t prepare scripts or fully written-out speeches.
↳ Provide bullet points only, written for spoken delivery.

7/ Make slides message-led
↳ Title slide must contain the key message, not the topic. 
↳ Each slide should hold a single point, visually clean. 10 words max.

8/ Send 1 week in advance 
↳ Share all speeches, presentations and briefings 1 week in advance
↳ This give me time to revise and prepare.  

9/ Be proactive
↳Flag upcoming opportunities or challenges early.
↳ Involve me as needed to align messaging before drafting. 

10/ If unsure, ask
 ↳ When in doubt about messages, structure, or tone, consult me before producing any materials.

Your mind goes blank mid-speech.

You start to worry.

What do you do?

Public speaking is scary – what can throw me off is not getting a reaction from the crowd.

“Do they not like it? Are they even listening?”

During a major talk 9 years ago, I choked – I just couldn’t remember what came next.

It can happen to anyone. Even those paid 4 millions per year on the speaking circuit – like Scott Galloway, who had panic attacks on stage on 3 different occasions.

How do you prevent it? With my BMW method:

1/ Calm your BODY
↳ Practice sighing and breathing.
↳Try to be well rested, don’t overcaffeinate.
↳ Move before you are trapped on stage.

2/ Tame your MIND
↳ Reframe nervousness as excitement.
↳ Show up to give, not to get.

3/ Prepare your WORDS
↳ Use structure, not scripts.
↳ Choking is often the result of memorizing a script. Instead, remember stories and key
messages.

But what do you do when it still happens?

You can turn to the audience: “Who here has experienced this?”

If you really need a moment say: “I’m sorry, I'm not feeling well, please be patient with me.” or “I’m sorry, my mind went blank. Please give me a minute.”

The key is to say something so your audience knows what’s going on. People usually couldn't be any nicer about it.

Breathe, then go back to your presentation. If you have slides, read off of them until you recover.

If you don’t, I recommend having a “plan on a page” nearby. That’s the outline of your talk. It can be on the floor, on a desk or lectern nearby, or in your back pocket.

Choking isn’t failure. It’s feedback. Ask yourself:

Was it my BODY?
↳ Was I jetlegged, tired, did I drink the night before?
↳ Next time, get ready for your speech like an athlete gets ready for a game.

Was it my MIND?
↳ Did my perfectionism, imposter syndrome or need for validation kick in?
↳ Next time, make it all about how you can help the audience, not yourself.

Are my WORDS to blame?
↳ Did I use a storytelling structure or did I try to remember a script?
↳ If the latter, move from Level 2 (Robot) to Level 3 speaking (Raconteur).

In 2025, U.S. employers announced 1.1 million layoffs.

The highest since the 2020 pandemic period. 

It happens to all of us: our career changes.

We lose our job, burn out, or exit our business.

How do we deal with this emotional rollercoaster? And how should we communicate about it?

1 - Acknowledge Your Emotions

↳ Feeling a range of emotions – such as anxiety, fear, relief, or sadness – is a natural part of the transition.
↳ Make peace with what has happened.

2 - Separate professional identity from personal worth

↳ Recognise that your job title does not define your personal value.
↳ Separate your identity to some extent from your professional success.

3 - Once you have acknowledged it, move on

↳ What your next company really cares about is: What are you going to do for them going forward?
↳ All of your communication going forward should be focused on the future state.

4 - Lean on your support network

↳ Share your feelings and experiences with trusted friends, family, or professional mentors.
↳ They can offer support, perspective, and encouragement.

5 - Think about interviews as a two-way conversation

↳ You also interview your future employer.
↳ Before you go into interviews think about: What am I looking for in an ideal employer?

6 - Remember that people don’t care as much as you

↳ Who says that you have to communicate immediately? No one.
↳ Firstly, figure out what it is that you want and then design the communication to the world through that perspective.

7 - Start with the truth. Just be clear.

↳ If you want to take some time in between roles to be with your family or develop other skills, that is okay.
↳ Just be clear on how you communicate this with the world.

8 - Maintain a positive and forward-looking mindset

↳ Frame your narrative around future goals and opportunities.
↳ Tell a love story about the future. People will appreciate it.

Become more human.

Your biggest leadership threat in 2026 isn’t AI. It’s irrelevance.

7 pieces of advice you hear a lot. 

But hurt your career. 

You've probably heard these communication tips many times. 

But communication is a cutting-edge skill set – don’t get fooled by outdated advice. 

Having coached over 10,000 leaders from 50 countries, I believe it’s important to set the record straight:

📝 “Speak Slower” 

This advice worked in the past when people spoke to large crowds without microphones. Today? It leads to word starvation.
→ Vary your speed: speak faster to project energy and slower to emphasize key points.

👥 “Tell them what you're going to tell them, tell them, then tell them what you told them” 

This old-school structure is clunky and annoys modern audiences. It lacks suspense.
→ Instead, weave in your key message naturally and repeat it throughout your talk.

📺 “Use a Teleprompter” 

It feels safe, but audiences can tell you're reading – and it kills your credibility.
→ Use a solid structure that makes your content easy to remember.

🍽️“The Feedback Sandwich” 

Start positive, deliver criticism, end positive. Sounds familiar?
Problem: People see right through this and feel manipulated.
→ Be honest and speak like a human, not like a manager.

👀 “Just Act Natural” 

Public speaking and interviews aren't natural situations. Telling someone to "act natural" isn't helpful.
→ Build real confidence through practice. Collect proof that you can do it.

💪“Just Put in the Reps” 

Practice is important, but not enough. It's about 10,000 iterations – not 10,000 hours.
→ Get feedback. Make adjustments. Then improve.

BONUS: “Fake it till you make it.” 

It tends to backfire and people who run stuff see right through it. 
→ “Face it and ace it.”

Terrible Communications Advice 

Your biggest leadership flex in 2026?

Telling one story so well it replaces 20 slides.

Most leaders are ramblers or robots. 

Their presentations are data dumps, their speeches forgettable, their relevance shrinking in the age of AI. 

But there is a way to achieve relevance, confidence and impact – and it is a learnable skill. 

I’ve taught it to 300 CEOs and founders so they could command the world’s biggest stages like SXSW, Web Summit and TED and raise millions for their startups. 

Whether you realize it or not, you fall into one of these three categories. 

Which one are you? And more importantly – who do you want to become in 2026?

Level 1: The Rambler

Passionate but all over the place. They have plenty to say but no clear path, leaving their audience lost (or looking at their phones).

To move up to Level 2:
→ Write down your key messages. Writing it down clarifies your thinking. 
→ Create a 1-page outline of your talk or presentation, or even a script. 
→ Practice, practice, practice.    

Level 2: The Robot 

Polished, rehearsed, and… forgettable. 

They are on message but miss the one thing that matters most – connection.

To move up to Level 3:
→ Ditch your script or teleprompter.  
→ Turn your talk or presentation into a story.  
→ Add sparkle: metaphors, surprise, drama, attention hooks.  
→ Remember what you want to say, don’t memorize. 

Level 3: The Raconteur 

The speaker who pulls you in. They don’t just talk; they transport. 

They weave structure with spontaneity, data with drama, making their message impossible to ignore.

Great speakers don’t just inform. They captivate. They shift perspectives, spark emotions, and make ideas stick.

We used to trust what we saw unless there was a reason not to. Now we don’t trust what we see unless there is a reason to.

The AI gap will widen rapidly between people who use it as Word 2.0 or break their brand with AI slop, and those who use it to create 10X impact.

Not just the big platforms, but also creators focus a lot more on segmentation – they know that you will only respond to the most relevant information.

We are visual creatures. But not all videos work. They are either raw and authentic, or highly produced like a TV show. The mediocre middle gets killed.

AI, misinformation, deepfakes, geopolitical omnicrises and audiences that despise boilerplate statements but also move on quicker than ever – all of that means the way we’ve dealt with crises for the past ten years is a goner.

7/ 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐝𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐡 𝐨𝐟 𝐬𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐜𝐡 𝐞𝐧𝐠𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐬

We now ask ChatGPT and Google is no longer a search engine but an answer engine. If you haven’t tried an AI browser like Atlas or Comet, it’s worth it.

8/ 𝐒𝐨 𝐥𝐨𝐧𝐠, 𝐥𝐨𝐬𝐞𝐫𝐬

AI has killed cold outreach, X keeps shedding users, and traditional media
continue to lose eyeballs to social media where most of us now get our news.

9/ 𝐒𝐭𝐚𝐲𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐩𝐨𝐰𝐞𝐫

Newsletters, cohorts, webinars, and smaller gatherings of likeminded people will continue to do well in 2026 because they build trust and offer human connection.

10/ 𝐁𝐨𝐧𝐮𝐬: 𝐈𝐭’𝐬 𝐝𝐨-𝐨𝐫-𝐝𝐢𝐞 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐛𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠

Graduates face a brutal job market. Employees feel replaceable. Founders can
build products faster than ever – but distribution is the real bottleneck. In a world where AI makes creation cheap, attention becomes the scarce asset. An audience now beats experience. If you’re not building a personal brand, you’re already late.

NVIDIA became the world’s most valuable company in 2025.  

6 contrarian leadership principles its CEO swears by. 

Jensen Huang, CEO of NVIDIA breaks the rules of conventional leadership. 

With massive success: Not only is NVIDIA worth more than Microsoft and Apple – but it only 20% the number of employees. It's a crazy efficient organization.

While others optimized org charts, Jensen Huang optimizes leverage: 

1 - “I don’t like firing people. I torture people into greatness.” 

2 - He has 60 direct reports – “the best practice”. This removes 7 layers of hierarchy in the organization. 

3 - No 1-2-1s. No privileged access to information. Having the same information empowers everyone.

4 - Give feedback in front of everybody. Feedback is learning. Don’t deprive others of learning. 

5 - Use humor: “I wish you plenty of pain and suffering” meaning “I wish you greatness.”  

6 - He employs a distinctive communication strategy known as T5T emails, which stands for "Top 5 Things." 

By reviewing these emails, Huang stays closely connected with all levels of the organization, fostering a culture of transparency and agility.

In addition to the T5T system, he emphasizes brevity and clarity in communication. 

He prefers emails to be succinct, typically no more than five or six lines, with one sentence per line and double-spacing. 

This format ensures that key points are communicated efficiently, allowing for quick understanding and prompt decision-making to adapt swiftly in the rapidly evolving tech industry.

The most fundamental mistake in communications?

People don't start from the right place.
