It was never my plan, but it became my purpose. In 2012, I was looking to start my professional career. I just completed college and was looking to immediately use my degree in my field of study. However, that did not immediately happen for me. I applied to over 40 jobs with no success. The process of finding work became overwhelming and discouraging. It was not until six month later, I came across an opportunity to become a career counselor helping military service members, their spouses, and dependents transition into the civilian workforce. This was completely outside my comfort zone. Prior to working as a career counselor, I had no military experience nor did I come from a military family. I had challenges adapting to the military environment and worked to connect with service members and families that I was helping. Helping services find their goals gave me a sense of fulfillment in my job. It was then I knew I enjoyed helping people find success in their career paths. Although I enjoyed helping Soldiers and families transition to civilian life, the work environment had changed drastically. My pay decreased by almost seven percent and my caseload had increased exponentially. I knew it was time to explore other options. I knew helping people was something I enjoyed. After your years of helping over 3,000 Soldiers with their transition and family members. I began working as a case manager with the State of Alaska helping individuals who had children and receiving cash assistance through public assistance obtain self-sufficiency by finding employment. While I enjoyed working in case management, I always wanted to gain experience in my field of study. I left case management after almost three years. I started working as an investigator with the State of Alaska to ensure that wage earners are getting paid correctly in the State of Alaska. It has been an awesome experience finding a profession that I could help people and work in the field I went to school for. Meeting my professional goal was not enough.
