what's on my "OUT" list for 2026:

→ blatant AI written copy and comments
→ expecting entry level social media marketers to have 15 years of experience
→ “read the caption” clickbait Reels and a poor content experience
→ calling anything or anyone "cringe" (literally shut up)
→ thinking the B in B2B stands for boring and refusing to break boundaries of your niche
→ ignoring your comment section then wondering why no one engages
→ treating social media like a broadcast channel instead of a conversation
→ X (bye)
→ sleeping on the power of the comment section
→ influencer trips (it's all about customers and community now, keep up)

ok so I have a very complicated relationship with LinkedIn.

I've been on here for half a decade, built my career because of this app, literally taught thousands of peers how to build their own brands on here and you know what? I still find it hard.

not the writing bit, I quite like that.  it's the what the hell do I even post about bit that gets me. 

content burnout is real and I see it constantly in the insiders clu: people start strong, post for a few weeks, then just stop. 

because figuring out what to post when you're stuck in your own head is genuinely difficult.

here's what I always come back to: you need to work backwards.

goal → who needs to see this → what would help them → how do I show up

→ my goal right now: position myself as the go-to for practical social media
→ who needs to see this: social media managers, marketing coordinators, small business owners doing their own marketing - people who are drowning in conflicting advice and just want something that actually works
→ what would help them: honest takes on what's working right now. shortcuts I've learned the hard way, the stuff that sounds too simple to share but is actually what people need to hear
→ how do I want to show up? lowercase (always), conversational, zero corporate speak

→ so to do that thing for those people I need to share: real examples from running a 700k+ community, behind-the-scenes of what's actually working, calling out the tactics that sound good but don't work, giving away the strategies others normally save for paid services

we recently hit 220,000 followers on here and i need a minute 😭 AD

because in 2020, i started an Instagram page as a uni student to pad out my cv. 

then in January 2021, my career advisor told me linkedin would "help me get a job" so i started repurposing content here

by 2022, I was ready to quit: burnt out from client work, questioning if any of this mattered.

then in early 2024, i did something that felt crazy: I got rid of all my freelance clients to launch a membership. 

no safety net, no clue what i was doing, just a community of people who wanted to connect over social media marketing without the waffle

what's IN:
→ conversion rate as the real flex
→ group chats and closed communities
→ LinkedIn (the girls that get it, get it)
→ "made by humans" as a selling point
→ your own team becoming the faces people follow
→ actual expertise over surface-level hot takes
→ building trust in the comments
→ 3k followers getting brand deals
→ LinkedIn being where the smart people are
→ posting messy and figuring it out

when Pretty Little Marketer turned 5 this year, i thought i'd feel like i'd "made it" - instead i realised i'd been holding onto a version of myself and this brand that didn't fit anymore.

who i was at 22 starting an instagram page in my uni bedroom is not who i am now. 

and PLM doesn't have to stay frozen in that era either.

for a long time, i kept doing things because "that's what PLM does."

the same content formats, he same visual identity, the same way of showing up. 

not because it still felt right, but because it's what people knew me for, because changing felt like admitting the old way was wrong and because i didn't know if people would follow if i evolved.

i'd been carrying all these "shoulds" without realising: 
→ i should stay the carousel queen forever (i mean have fun trying to take that title, i will forever brag that PLM carousels are the best)
→ i should keep things looking the way people expect 
→ i should be further along by now 
→ i should have it all figured out at 5 years in 
→ i should separate myself from the brand (or the opposite - never separate at all)

but here's what no one tells you about building something for 5 years: you will outgrow it. 

so this year i let go.

new brand, new era, new way of doing things, saying no to stuff that used to excite me, saying yes to things that scared me - more speaking, more video, more of my actual face and voice rather than hiding behind templates.

hell, i even chopped all of my hair off.

there was grief in it: the old PLM got me here and she did her job, but she wasn't going to get me to the next bit.

the thing is, your audience can feel when you're performing a version of yourself that doesn't fit anymore, and they can also feel when you finally step into something real.

this year taught me: evolving isn't betraying what you built. 

it's the only way to keep building.

if you're holding onto a "should" about who you're supposed to be right now - maybe this is your permission slip to let it go.

“i’d love to be a creator” oh but you ALREADY ARE

you’re writing content.
you’re sharing insights.
you’re engaging a community.

the only difference between you and the “creators” you admire is that they decided they were one. 

that’s it - that’s the whole thing.

you don’t need permission, you don’t need a blue tick, you don’t need 100k followers.

you just need to stop waiting for someone to anoint you and start owning what you’re already doing.

Reddit's co-founder just said the future of social is group chats ‼️✨🥱

Alexis Ohanian thinks "the most potent form of social today is basically in group chats" 

and yeah, we know.

Broadcast Channels launched last year, TikTok's expanding their roll out Bulletin Boards (literally just Broadcast Channels but on TikTok), more and more creators are building on Discord, Patreon, using Substack's chat feature.

this isn't new.

but everyone's getting one thing massively wrong about private spaces (and if you're building community, you need to hear this).

they think throwing people in a chat = instant community.

spoiler: it doesn't.

I opened our Pretty Little Marketer membership in April 2024 and our group chat was dead for a year.

this March, I launched membership 2.0 - we moved from an all-in-one platform to our own hub, daily emails, and a Slack group.

and yes, Slack made a difference (a massive one actually) but that's not why our group chat thrives now.

I spent a year throwing people in a room expecting it to "just work" but here's what actually works (tried and tested):

→ give people permission from day one: we have an intros channel where everyone is encouraged to post when they join, and since doors only open quarterly I drop prompts between launches to keep the conversation going because people just need direction and permission to take up space

→ create low-effort wins: we have pet-pics and Friday-wins channels because not every interaction needs to be productive or smart, sometimes you just need a reason to show up

→ guaranteed value: every other Wednesday we host "ask the expert" sessions directly in slack where someone new answers real questions on specific topics, giving people a safe space to ask and know they'll actually get value back

→ clear expectations (this is the big one): PLM group does exactly 3 things - community, expert access, resources - so when people know what we are (and aren't), they know when to show up and what for and they can build an actual habit

→ the host sets the tone: I get visibly excited over boring stuff like website updates, new webinar replays, someone's first comment because energy is contagious and if you want people to care, you have to show them how

platforms are scrambling to copy each other's features and we're all running to catch up but I think we're missing the point.

it's not about the tech → it's about teaching people how to be in the space.

massive followings aren't the flex they used to be 👀

the New Yorker wrote about how a locked instagram account with 500 followers now has more cachet than a public one with 500k (I'll drop the link in the comments).

it's not something I've thought about before but it makes sense.

algorithmic feeds killed intentional following, so people don't seek out accounts anymore, they just drift where the feed takes them.

and anyone can optimise for that now: buy followers, manipulate the algorithm, inflate their numbers.

so your follower count says less about genuine interest and more about how well you've played that game.

so if big audiences don't equal influence anymore, what does?

💭✨ 

groups where people genuinely show up.

not because an algorithm pushed them there, not because they're being sold something but because they chose to be there and they keep choosing to stay.

and maybe that's a group of a million, but now there's the *same* influence in a group of 20.

we're all trying to keep up with the predictions: the group chat shift, the long-form comeback, SEO strategies, whatever trend I tell you to optimise for next (via a super cute Pretty Little Marketer carousel, if course)

but what actually matters is just building spaces where people want to be.

the follower count era was about scale, maybe the next era is about depth instead.

remember when we thought creators had to dance in front of ring lights and share their morning routines? well, plot twist: the intellectual influencer era just entered the chat 👀 

and it's about to flip everything we know about "content creation" on its head.

we've been watching this shift happen: academics leaving universities to build youtube channels, industry experts turning their LinkedIn into mini-masterclasses, professionals who've never posted a selfie suddenly influencing massive audiences.

they're not doing 3 reels a day.
they're not showing you their outfit of the day.
they're not trying to go viral with trending audio.

they're just sharing what they know. 

they're not influencers in the traditional sense.

they're educators, guides, experts who happen to use social platforms.

and they're building sustainable businesses while actually making an impact.

here's why this matters for literally everyone with expertise (yes, you):

→ you don't need a massive audience: small, engaged communities who value your expertise are worth more than huge follower counts chasing virality.

→ you can start right now with what you already know: the problems you've solved and systems you've built in your career are exactly what other people are trying to figure out.

→ your expertise opens doors beyond content: speaking opportunities, consulting work, and partnerships follow when you're known for what you know.

→ you can build revenue that doesn't require you to show up every single day: courses let you answer the questions people actually need help with at scale.

because sharing your expertise on social is great, but packaging it into something people can actually implement is where *real* impact happens.

as a long-time lurker, this is so exciting - and what better way to make my debut than with the brilliant Sprout Social, Inc. team (CC Matilda and Abigail who are just fantastic!)

back in October, a musician ran a random TikTok experiment, and "group 7" accidentally became a cultural moment. 

millions of people started claiming their spot in this made-up club, commenting it on completely unrelated videos like some kind of secret handshake - even celebrities joined in.

not because anyone cared about the song, but because people are desperate to belong to something, even if that something is a made-up club on the internet that means absolutely nothing.

the problem is our entire industry runs on the idea that doing more gets you more. more posts, more platforms, more content, more everything.

people aren't asking for more content - they're asking to feel like they're part of something. 

they want smaller spaces, human interaction, and moments that feel real.

so i'm making the case for smaller circles in 2026, why brands need to stop broadcasting and why they need to start building spaces where people actually feel like they belong instead.

and look, i love our community more than anything - but waking up to mass notifications every morning and trying to work out what actually needs my attention was taking me 45 minutes just to figure out where to start.

so i built a system that does the thinking for me.

every morning at 7am, a Zapier agent reads through all of yesterday's messages, mentions, and threads - then sends me a briefing telling me what got done, what's urgent, and what can wait.

i read it in two minutes - then i actually know which conversations to jump into first instead of just... scrolling and hoping for the best.

when you're a tiny team trying to give hundreds of people proper attention, this is the only way it works.
