I advise tech founders and investors on strategic M&A, LBO and growth fundraising. I focus specifically on oss / ai / cloud / devtools and IT services companies.

I’m also the founder of The Unicorn CTO, a global community for ambitious CTOs and technology leaders willing to learn and connect with peers.

I focus on M&A and fundraising operations for the Enterprise Technology sector, particularly on developer tools, infrastructure, security, data and open-source companies.

🔥 Le fameux “triple, triple, double, double, double” n’intéresse plus les meilleurs fonds de VC.


C’est Hemant Taneja, CEO de General Catalyst, qui l’a dit la semaine dernière à Harry Stebbings dans le podcast 20VC.

Autrefois, faire $1M → $3M → $9M → $18M → $36M → $72M en 5 ans, c’était le graal. La trajectoire des startups les plus performantes.

Aujourd’hui ? Même ça, ce n’est plus assez.
General Catalyst cherche des boîtes capables de passer de $1M à $100M… en moins de 18 mois (!). 

Et chaque semaine, j’ai l’impression qu’une nouvelle startup annonce avoir franchi le cap encore plus vite que la précédente (👋 Arthur ✌️ Querou).

Conséquence : pour toutes les startups qui continuent à faire un “triple, triple, double, double, double”, voire juste une croissance très solide… l’accès aux top tier VCs est devenu impossible.

Pourtant, même si 95 % des VCs ne sont pas General Catalyst, beaucoup suivent la tendance et laisser passer des deals qu’ils auraient fait sans problème il y a quelques années.

👉 Résultat : les toutes meilleures startups ont l’embarras du choix, tandis que la grande majorité du peloton galère à lever des fonds.

La vraie question : est-ce que le capital-risque ne devrait pas sortir du dogme de la power law qui pousse à tout miser sur une poignée d’outliers, pour inventer un modèle plus en phase avec la réalité des startups d’aujourd’hui ?

Un modèle qui continue de générer de beaux retours pour les LPs, mais qui valorise aussi les entreprises solides, rentables, et capables de créer de la valeur durable.
