95% of prospects I've talked to in mid-market and enterprise accounts believe waterfall enrichment, AI personalization and account research are adoptions that need to be prioritized. 

However, I've yet to hear leaders starting to prioritize deliverability. Here's what I commonly hear:

- "Well we are sending at low volume, no more than 50 emails per account (from their primary domain)".

- "We are validating contacts (using the filter from ZoomInfo)".

- "Some of our emails are bouncing at the 4th and 5th step (because we emailed mailboxes monitored by Mimecast & Proofpoint").

I get it. Deliverability is technical, sales teams aren't incentivized to keep tabs on it, and there's often no direct responsible individual for deliverability in most teams.

The truth is, deliverability is a TEAM EFFORT.

SDRs > AEs > RevOps > Sales Leaders should all be on the same page for it to work.

Instead of letting these problems build up over time ensure that you: 

⚙  Work with your RevOps and Sales Operations teams to tackle deliverability
issues at their root e.g. email infrastructure setup, contact validation and use of old data.

📄 Create deliverability guides for copywriting and list building so your teams can easily follow best practices. 

📊  Establish deliverability metrics and benchmarks along with contingency plans, e.g. purchasing more domains over time, diversifying your ESPs/SMTP providers.

Cold email outbound is becoming trickier by the minute, with more domains getting blocked, ESPs gathering more data on deliverability practices, and the spray-and-pray approach no longer working.

This is not the time to: 

✖️ Cheap out on email infrastructure, those 1$/mo Google reseller accounts are not going to cut it.

✖️ "It's just one link, it should be fine" or "would it be fine to send 20 more emails from each account?" (it won't be fine).

✖️ Filter contacts in Apollo.io with valid emails and sequence them without verifying. 

✖️Send cold emails from your primary domain. 

2024 is the year to {fix|sort out|streamline} your cold email outreach. 

If your outbound metrics look like the ones below, you need to fix your email infrastructure.

Your list building, copywriting, offer or fancy AI personalization won't matter until that's sorted. ⤴️

🚨 Your email campaign could be in DANGER and you might not even know it. 

The culprits? Your hygiene. 

Having bad breath is bad for deliverability.

Okay, kidding here - prospects can't smell coffee breath (yet) via cold email.

List hygiene is what I meant.

Ignored by most. Understood by few.

But it's the silent killer of cold email campaigns.

Let's break it down:

✅ Bounce Rates 101: The percentage of your emails that are rejected by the recipient's email server for multiple reasons.

❓ Why It Matters: It's the canary in the coal mine for your email list health.

🔍  Where to Find It: Hidden in plain sight in your email platform's analytics.

Keep it below 1%.

is your bounce rate above 3%? You're on thin ice. Ensure that you always:

🚮  Clean your list like your quota depends on it. (Because it will.)

✅ Implement contact validation. Trust, but verify.

 👋 Say goodbye to those high-bounce mailboxes. They're just not that into you.

♻  Revalidate every 2-3 months. Lists age like milk, not wine

A high bounce rate isn't just a number.

It's a reputation killer.

It's the difference between landing in the inbox and Spamsville.

Don't let another email bounce.

Getting things wrong with campaigns early-on is normal.

When I started with cold outbound I was doing what my coworkers were doing. 

Monkey see 🐵 Monkey do 🙉 

And I was not getting results from that outreach, because it didn't come natural to me. 

I was focusing on relating pre-made sales scripts to whoever was there to listen. 

And I got crickets until I stopped looking over what other people were doing and made my own path.

Fast forward till today:

- We now have the copy in mind before we even finish building a contact list.

- We A/B/C/D test variations across a sample size of no more than 20% of our target list.

- Once we find a winner, we optimize it and double down on the best performing version.

And once we get things right... 

These are the kind of results that we are able to get for clients 🚀

Website data has to be on of my favorite Clay plays for signals. 

You can use Similarweb or Semrush data to find patterns month over month. 

Traffic data can help you get triggers like: 

- Companies that boosted their traffic more than 25-50% mom 📈 
- Companies that saw a jump on social traffic 👥 
- Businesses experiencing a surge in organic search traffic 🔍
- Companies with a significant increase in mobile traffic 📱
- Websites with improved engagement metrics (e.g., time on site, pages per visit) ⏱️
- Businesses experiencing a spike in referral traffic from particular sources 🔗

These traffic patterns can indicate growth, new initiatives, or changes in strategy, making them valuable signals for sales and marketing teams. 

By leveraging this data in Clay, you can filter these benchmarks by company and create custom messaging based on these triggers in autopilot.

3️⃣ Select a specific radius for your target location and type of business.

Here's one of the BEST growth hacks that you can do as a founder in 2024. 🚀 

If you are transitioning from founder-led sales into a FT sales team and have a strong personal brand this one is for you:

1️⃣ Let your sales team create multiple domains and mailboxes using your alias. Spread them throughout your sales team.

2️⃣ Warm-up those mailboxes for at least 14 days before sending campaigns.

3️⃣ Start sending and once you get interested leads into meetings with your team, invite the original mailbox into the conversation so the prospect can find the original conversation.

4️⃣ Let your sales team do the rest!

We were contacted last month by an AI SDR company to help them with their business development efforts. 

AI SDRs promise to replace your entire sales development team and claim to do ALL of these tasks better:

📩  Email infrastructure
🌐  Domain warming
👥  Prospecting
🖋 Copywriting
📬 Sequencing
📨 Inbox management
📆  Appointment setting

Here's the truth: 

No single tool has ever mastered all these tasks. 

Heck, everyone would be buying a tool that gets all of these right and performs better than 3-5 separate vendors.

The reality is that you need the best possible tool for each task, and there are a LOT of solutions out there that are specialized in solving one single problem, maybe two or three at most but beyond those use cases, quality of subsequent use cases will take a dip.

And AI isn't changing this.

Here's the three issues with AI SDRs:

- It can't handle outliers. Prospecting and getting a campaign right is full of curve balls. 

- AI will eventually break when things get weird. It hallucinates. AI can spew nonsense that delves into the nerves of your prospect at a ground-breaking pace (see what I did there?).

- It lacks human judgment. Gut feeling, emotional intelligence and knowing how much personalization it's too much personalization matters.

- It may perform well at the beginning but eventually break down. Deliverability will take a HUGE dip after just a few weeks of sending, and AI won't be able to fix your infrastructure.

I'm bullish in AI and believe models will get better, but at this time there needs to be a human behind that can tweak and supervise the output. 

AI in sales is like trying to learn a language solely through Google translate. It'll get the words, but miss all of the cultural nuances and context.

Food for thought: If AI SDRs are so great, why did an AI SDR company need an agency to sell their own solution?
