One thing stopping me from posting on LinkedIn is the fear of cringe.

I know it's a common struggle for many of us in the industry.
 
It's funny. 

I work in marketing, but why am I more comfortable marketing for businesses and other people, and not myself?
 
Maybe it's the vulnerability that comes with putting oneself out there.

I think marketing for businesses feels comfortable because we can hide behind the brand, focusing on its features, benefits, and value proposition.

But when it comes to marketing ourselves, suddenly, the spotlight is on us, our skills, and our personal brand. It can feel daunting and downright scary because you put your personality and intelligence out for people to judge — especially if you share authentically.

{I say "authentically" because some people can create an "internet persona," but I'm not one of them}

Before deciding to show up consistently on LinkedIn, here are some things I like to remind myself why it's worth it:

1) The cheerleading will outweigh the criticism. 

People who put themselves out there know what it feels like and will be kind to you, especially people who believe there is enough success for everyone.

2) The opportunities will come, and in various forms. 

You will gain connections, relationships, mentorship, collaborations, job offers, and so much more that you may not have encountered otherwise.

3) Taking risks and exposing yourself to new experiences is character and confidence-building.

Putting yourself out there requires confidence, but it also helps to build it. Whether or not you experience success, trying new things is still a worthy pursuit of your time: You become more assured in your abilities and more willing to take on new challenges.

As my friend, life coach Libni Fortuna says, "Keep going until it doesn't feel cringey anymore"

One of the hardest parts of writing consistently is shipping a post when you're uninspired.

Some days you're bursting with ideas, and other days, your brain just wants to take a nap. 😴 

Here are a few tricks I've picked up along the way to keep that writing streak alive, even when motivation goes MIA:

✍️ Jot ideas down: Anyone who's had a good idea and forgot about it before being able to flesh it out knows how much it sucks! 😡 

So now, whenever an idea pops into my head, I immediately write it down before I completely lose it. Then, whenever I come up short, I revisit and see if it's worth expounding.

💡 Change my environment: Sometimes creative burnout happens because your brain doesn't receive new stimuli. 

To keep my brain active and engaged, I vary my routine from time to time. It doesn't have to be grand: people-watching at the park or journaling at a coffee shop is enough.

Plus, you can consider it a mini-break too! 🌱

📝 Make room for the mess: Not every word I write is gold, and that's okay. Sometimes, you just have to let yourself write garbage and trust that the good stuff will come later.

I've learned to be kinder to myself instead of beating myself up when I'm not feeling super inspired. 

Like, it's okay to have days where the words don't flow like magic. After all, we're only human.

I've always wanted to be the girl who posted consistently on LinkedIn.

I would do it...and stop after 5 (or 3) days.

And although I know I'm not the only one who struggles with this, the thought of restarting my ✨ LinkedIn journey ✨ AGAIN is giving me the heebie-jeebies. 

I've put off writing a post for ~2 weeks now 🙈 
but I promised myself I would ship and publish 3x this week, so there's no other time to start than today.

To make it easier, I thought it best to start with re-introductions:

A recent hobby I've discovered is creating short-form videos for Instagram and TikTok. 📹 

Upon the encouragement of my fitness coach, I started creating content in January to document the progress of my fitness journey. It was a blast, but because I was busy in February and March, it fell by the wayside for a bit.

Last week, my fitness coach gave me a gentle nudge to restart, and I'm so glad he did. I've been back at it, posting consistently since then.

One thing I enjoy about the process is creating multiple types of videos from a long video clip of me performing an exercise.

It's essentially content repurposing (which I do for work) but with video instead of text.

One gym session =
- longer video of the full-body workout
- tips posts
- short clips of funny content
- "quick views" content (using trending music, riding on a trend)
- motivational content

I can play around with music, hashtags, text, font styles, color grading, and more.

Another thing I love about creating video content is that I'm not pressured to be excellent.

I'm a complete beginner and I do it for fun, so I have permission to be bad at it.

I ✨ create ✨  because it's another way I get to express myself, and the feeling reminds me of the time I started blogging in 2012.

Here's what I learned after consistently posting on LinkedIn for three weeks:

1️⃣ Consistency is key. Showing up regularly allowed me to build momentum and familiarity with my audience.

For consistency, I tried not to let two days go by without posting. 
Even if the post wasn't perfect or polished, it had to go out. No ifs or buts!

It was like going to the gym or driving for me — the more I did it, the more it became second nature.

2️⃣ It's better to post about things you know. My impostor syndrome used to hinder me from sharing my thoughts. I wasn't an expert, but I was trying to sound like one, and it made me uncomfortable. 

This time around, I went with a new tactic: ✨authenticity✨

I gave myself permission to only write about things I knew or cared about, no matter how shallow they might sound, because it made writing easier and more enjoyable for me.

3️⃣ Detach from metrics and focus on writing to express yourself. 

I used to fall into the trap of tying my ego to my writing.

I would give my all on a piece, but not because I wanted to do well.
It was so I could get good feedback. 

I would write things I thought people wanted to hear, and if I didn't only got a few reactions, I was a bad writer.

This time, I removed all the "power" likes and reactions had over me and focused on the fulfillment of putting my thoughts out there.

It's been much more enjoyable.

4️⃣ A supportive group makes writing more fun.

I started to get serious about posting after Kristiana invited several people in her network to become LinkedIn accountability buddies.

A few days later, Tamilore posted about Buffer's #CreatorCamp 🏕 .

Creator Camp has been really helpful, especially with ideation. Whenever I come up short, I check the day's writing prompts.

It gives me no excuse not to publish.

After three weeks of consistent posting, I've seen a 250% increase in impressions and a 300% increase in engagements. Plus, I've gained new followers and connections.

Why is overcoming impostor syndrome important?

I wish I knew how to swim. 🏊‍♂️

Living near the beach for most of my life, you'd think swimming would come as naturally to me as breathing.

But here's the thing: I never quite mastered it.

I remember taking swimming lessons when I was 6.

The instructor took me to the deeper end of the pool and expected me to make my way back, but I ended up throwing a hissy fit and he had to carry me back himself. 😅 

The next time I tried was at school. We had a special program for swimming, though I wonder why it never progressed to more than breathing exercises.

When I started traveling around the Philippines, most of the places my sister and I would go to were beach towns.

To be honest, I felt so lame feeling content to be left on the boat. Or if I did make my way into the water, it would be around the vicinity of the boat.

One of the most memorable experiences I had was at Apo Island in Dumaguete. The sea was the saltiest I'd ever tasted, but the boatman was the nicest one I ever encountered. 

He got me on a swimming ring, put me on a life vest, and pulled me around just so I could go snorkeling.

And I saw a pawikan (turtle)! 🐢 

When I got back from that trip, I told myself I just HAD TO learn how to swim. And so I enrolled in an adult swimming program.

I was making good progress, but again, my fears took over. 😭 

I haven't yet attempted to learn again, and I wonder if I will ever learn how to swim.

To me, learning to swim doesn't just mean finally unlocking a life skill or being able to explore underwater, it also represents me being able to finally let go of the need for control.

But hey, life's a journey of learning, right?

And just because I haven't mastered swimming yet doesn't mean I never will. It's a reminder that we're always a work in progress, constantly learning and growing.

I used to work 12-hour days.


I would visit clients on-site, then rush to the office to sit in meetings that would take as long as 4 hours, and then try to complete my deliverables — all while navigating an uncertain period (aka the pandemic).

❌ It wasn't sustainable.
❌ It wasn't healthy, and
❌ I certainly wasn't happy.

I was tired, underpaid, and at risk of contracting the virus because I was being sent to the field.

I communicated my concerns, but nothing changed.
So I put my foot down and quit my corporate job.

That was 4 years ago, and that's how I started freelancing full-time.

With freelancing, I got to choose where, when, who to work with, and how to work (goodbye, meetings! 👋).

Setting this boundary has allowed me to show up as my best self and lead a more fulfilling life.

I'm so glad I listened to myself.

...if it means I have to work 16-hour days or take more than 3 full-time clients at the same time.

To me, the FREE in #freelancing means I'm free to work:

✅ WHENEVER I like
(so yes, I CAN work 16 hours, but only if I WANT to)

I get it, we started freelancing for different reasons.

Some want to make more money. 🤑 
While others, like me, got into it to enjoy more time and freedom.

...which I obviously spent in a good way, chasing sheep 🐑 in Taiwan in my (faux) fur coat and knee-high boots 👀

Before working in marketing, I gained valuable experience in customer service, where my team operated under the product marketing group. 

I didn't think of it much then, but now I realize why that is — we were viewed as extensions of the sales and marketing teams. 

When clients had positive experiences with us, they'd buy our product and often became loyal brand advocates.

I don't know if it's because I had the training, but I believe delighting customers is pretty straightforward: treat them how YOU want to be treated. 

Going the extra mile can prevent unnecessary stress and foster positive relationships.

Here are some key practices:

▶ Keep your word and communicate if there are delays. 

For instance, I recently completed a project for a company that promised payment within three days, but it's been a month with no word.

I know delays can come up, but it would've been nice if the company said, "Hey, please expect a late payment," instead of ghosting me.

I really wanted to work for the company, but if this is how they treat candidates, then they probably could pull that sh*t on their employees as well. :(

▶ Prompt service is crucial. 

I experienced significant delays when my credit card company transitioned to a new provider. I made 4 phone calls, each taking me at least 30 minutes of wait time, and they still haven't resolved my issue. This led to so much wasted time and frustration.

Prompt service should be the bare minimum.

▶ Take initiative to anticipate and address customer needs. 

One standout experience was when my life insurance provider noticed discrepancies in my account information and took immediate action to rectify them.

Bottom line: There are lots of simple ways to delight customers. It doesn't take much but will lead to your business's long-term success and growth.

That was me with Taylor Swift's recent album — "The Tortured Poets Department".

(Well, to be fair, I remember feeling this way when 1989, Reputation, and Lover were released too 😬)

Turns out, there's a marketing lesson in there.

Just like how we might need to give a new album a few spins to appreciate it, sometimes our marketing campaigns need some time to sink in with our audience. 

Don't be discouraged if a campaign doesn't take off immediately. 

The Marketing Rule of 7 says a potential customer needs to interact with your brand at least seven times before purchasing. 

For me, I felt the narcotics kick in after my 4th listen. 😬
