Yesterday, I made the difficult decision to part ways with a content strategy client I had onboarded in December.


The project required customer research resources that my client didn't readily have. I created templates and guides to help them provide the necessary information, but the delays in receiving these critical resources massively compromised the project timeline and the relevance of my work.

As a freelancer, I rely on a well-structured schedule to ensure I can deliver high-quality work to all my clients. Extended delays and inconsistent communication from one client do have a spillover on the rest of our schedules.

This was a first for me, especially since I’m just stepping into content strategy, but I definitely learned some valuable lessons:

✨ Always take an advance, especially if you’re working with a new client. You want to be compensated for your work. I did, which is why I’m not feeling too bad about letting the client go.

✨ Communicate resource requirements upfront and make sure you have them before you start working. Unfortunately, I didn’t do this.

✨ Be transparent about challenges and their impact on the project. I communicated this multiple times, which is why the client wasn’t caught off guard when I decided to terminate the agreement. Try your best to make things work.

✨ Approach the situation with kindness, understanding, and professionalism. THE most important part. Everyone has different priorities and circumstances. Be empathetic and maintain a professional demeanor when handling such situations.

As freelancers, we’re running businesses. It's important to make decisions that protect your time, energy, and the quality and reputation of your work.

Sometimes, that means parting ways with a client who isn't a good fit.

Research paralysis. The silent killer of speedy content creation.

It’s a problem most writers—especially beginner-immediate writers—are familiar with. In fact, one writer recently asked me how I manage to churn out 4 pieces a week for clients when they spend days just researching.

And I get it. With so much information at our fingertips, it's easy to fall into a rabbit hole.
