I have One Simple Request

Please be careful about marking your emails as spam

Here’s why.

If you signed up for a:
✅ Lead magnet
✅ Video masterclass
✅ Email course
✅ Newsletter
✅ etc

You willingly gave your email in exchange for whatever they promised.

If at some point you don’t like their emails

Or they send too many emails

Or they seem spammy in some ways

Just unsubscribe.

By marking them as spam - you ruin the domain reputation of the creator.

With Google and Yahoo’s new requirements, the new spam threshold is 0.1% to 0.3%.

That’s not a lot.

Depending on your list size, a couple of spam complaints could switch that creator from sending emails that hit the inbox to emails never making it to their subscribers. 

I’ve seen small creators have to start over because they had emails marked as spam. 

And their emails? 

They weren’t spammy. 

If you get emails that you never signed up for?

By all means, mark them as spam.

But if you voluntarily signed up for something - and then decide you don’t want to receive their emails?  

Unsubscribe.

One of the biggest mistakes business owners make when trying to write a sales page or offer is…

They try to write it from top to bottom.

They get out a blank sheet of paper (OK or blank virtual document) and start trying to write.

The problem?  

You often don’t have all the components.

For instance, you get to the part about testimonials - and then you have to go hunt for them.

“In what folder do I keep them? “

“Should I ask Bob for a testimonial?”

It’s distracting.

And you might not have the right testimonial for this specific offer.

Instead, you should gather all the elements together BEFORE you start writing.

It’s like the French cooking technique “mise en place.”

Mise en place means “putting in place.”  

It refers to gathering all your ingredients and preparing them BEFORE you start cooking.

Most “home chefs” try to prepare as they go along.

Professional chefs:

✅ Wash all the vegetables
✅ Peel, cut, and chop everything
✅ Prepare the meat or fish
✅ Get the pans ready and all the equipment

Then it’s quite easy to start cooking.

But what does this have to do with your sales page?

You should “prepare” all the components before you construct it.

For instance, you should:

➡️ Collect all your testimonials 
➡️ Map out all your modules or steps
➡️ Identify your pain points and how your service is THE solution
➡️ Write your bio
➡️ Benefit beneath the benefit
➡️ Draft answers to frequently asked questions
➡️ And more…

If you work on all the elements first - it’s much easier to construct a rejection-proof sales page. 

Don’t get bogged down writing your sales page. 

Be like all those amazing French chefs.

Do you use “mise en place” when crafting your sales page?

Did you feel that? That shift? 

It's not an earthquake. 

And it’s not an April Fool’s Joke.

Only a major shift in the email marketing landscape.

Google and Yahoo have announced new email requirements that go into effect on April 1st. 

These aim to crack down on spam, improve email authentication, and give subscribers more control.

Here are the 3 key requirements you need to know about:

➡️ Stricter Email Authentication Protocols

Google and Yahoo are tightening up on SPF, DKIM, and DMARC protocols to reduce spam, spoofing, and phishing attempts. 

➡️ Stricter Spam Threshold 

The acceptable spam complaint rate is being drastically lowered.  

The new threshold will now be 0.3% 

Exceeding the new, lower threshold will result in email deliverability issues.


➡️ No More Free Email Domains 

Using a free email domain like @gmail.com or @yahoo.com in your email's "From" address will no longer be allowed for bulk emails.

➡️ Bonus Change - starting June 1, 2024

Easy Unsubscribe 

A prominent one-click unsubscribe link at the top of every email will be mandatory.  

And the unsubscribe must be processed within two days.  

No more burying that link in tiny font way at the bottom.

What This Means for You As A Business Owner

If you're not fully compliant, you can expect declining open rates, more emails going to spam, and potential blocks from Gmail and Yahoo inboxes altogether.  

Plus you will ruin your domain and sender reputation.  

Google and Yahoo are doing this for a good reason.  

The new policies aim to clean up the email ecosystem from spammers and bad actors.

To maintain email deliverability, you must audit your authentication protocols, spam rates, unsubscribe processes, and sending domains. 

This change is a wake-up call for email marketers.  

No longer can we ignore the technical aspects of sending emails.  

We must proactively manage and clean our email list.  

The email landscape is shifting in a big way on April 1st.

I’m talking about Spam. 
(What were you thinking of…?)

Most people think spam means:

• Unwanted Emails
• Emails that sell all the time
• SUBJECT LINES IN ALL CAPS
• Certain words - FREE, ACT NOW
• 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥 Emojis
• Excess !!!!!!!!!!!! 
• No way to unsubscribe
• And more (what would you add?)


But actually, there’s a massive gap between what subscribers think is spam…

and how email platforms like Google, Yahoo, and Microsoft define it.

This gap is a leading cause of deliverability disasters.

You hit send, expecting your email to land in inboxes.

But it didn’t.

What happened?

Email platforms use technical criteria to automatically detect and filter spam, focusing on factors like:

• Sending patterns and volume 

Unlike legitimate email, spam is often sent in bulk and at irregular times. 

• Email Authentication 

Lack of proper SPF, DKIM, and DMARC authentication signals spam (what I’ve been talking about). 

• Content quality 

Poorly written, irrelevant, or suspicious content is flagged as spam. 

• Complaints and engagement

High spam complaint rates or low engagement indicate spam. 


What seems like a “typical” email to your readers might be a spammy red flag to algorithms. 

Email platforms want to protect their users from malicious content, scams, and unwanted bulk email, even if the sender's intent is not necessarily fraudulent. 

To land your emails in your subscriber’s inboxes, you can't just avoid obvious no nos.

You need to deeply understand subscriber expectations AND increasingly stringent email scanning systems.

Can you have too much of a good thing?

I was auditing a sales page for a client.

I like to skim over at first.  

It was looking good so far.

It had some compelling content, design, visuals, etc.

Until I hopped over to mobile.

While it was mobile optimized when I got to the testimonials section….

They had an overwhelming amount.

I was scrolling…
And scrolling…
And scrolling…

I couldn’t even get to the “buy” button.

While I think testimonials are really powerful…

100s are probably not.

Quality over Quantity.

Are Your Testimonials Costing You Clients?

Client: "You're firing me?"

Me:  Yes.

It might sound bizarre, but sometimes, letting go of a client is the best decision you can make for your business.

A couple of years ago I had to make the tough call to fire a coaching client.

Usually I’m able to vet clients before I agree to work with them. But it didn’t work this time.

This client, let's call them Client X, had a habit of crossing boundaries.

Our agreement was clear: 

- regular calls, 
- defined deliverables, and 
- respectful communication.

However, Client X started demanding more 

- calls outside business hours, 
- expecting instant responses, and 
- generally asking for far beyond what we agreed upon in the contract.

This was not only draining but also unsustainable.

The lesson?

Your business, your rules.

As entrepreneurs, especially in the online space, we often fear losing clients.

But at what cost?

Your time?
Peace of mind?
The quality of your work for other clients?

Firing Client X was a decision to prioritize my business health and the value I provide to all my clients.

It was about setting boundaries and respecting my own process.

Growth isn't just about gaining more clients but also about nurturing the right relationships.

For all my fellow business owners out there, it's crucial to recognize when a client relationship is more harmful than beneficial.

It's not just about the revenue.

It’s about building a respectful, and productive working environment.

You've probably heard of Circadian Rhythms...

but have you heard of Ultradian Rhythms?

Ignore them at your own peril as an online business owner.

Ultradian rhythms are natural cycles of alertness and fatigue that occur throughout the day.

They typically last for about 90 minutes.

Within the cycle, you ascend to reach the apex of your productivity, entering an "ultradian performance peak."

Your focus sharpens, creativity flows, and you're in the zone of peak performance. 

You're able to do deep, focused work.

However, as you continue your mental and physical activity, the following start building up in your system:

✔metabolic waste
✔data and
✔toxins.

After about 90 minutes, you enter an "ultradian trough" - or low point.

You start feeling:

❌fatigued
❌ spacey
❌ groggy and
❌ irritable

Your body is signaling the need for down time and recovery.

Your brain needs a break to process vast amounts of data, organize information, and create new synapses.

Take a break of approximately 20 minutes and give your brain the opportunity to tag, organize, and refuel itself during the "Recovery."

Research shows that ignoring your body's signals during low-energy dips harms your energy and focus in the long run.

Pushing through without breaks leads to a decline in your next ultradian performance peak, affecting productivity and overall well-being.

By honoring your body's need for ultradian rhythm breaks, you:

📈 improve productivity
📈 reduce errors and
📈 are able to make better decisions

Unlock the path to enhanced productivity, well-being, and success by following your Ultradian Rhythms.

Action Step:
✅ Observe yourself.
✅ Try a 90 minute cycle and see how you feel.
✅ Take a break.
✅ Try another cycle.

Work with your body and brain to get the most out of your day.

While there are some 3rd party apps that give you this functionality, there is another option.

No need to download another app
Don’t need to connect your LinkedIn account
And no monthly payments

It’s the LinkedIn Text Formatter app.

All you have to do is paste certain elements of your post in the box - and voila it gives you all sorts of options for output.

Copy and then paste into your LinkedIn post.

No more plain text.

A couple of things to keep in mind…

It’s Unicode so it won’t be searchable
It may not be accessible for all devices

But for some selected text in a post?

I think it improves readability.

The most important piece of advice

I got from a boss that

I've kept 'til this day...

Create a Brag File 

Back then it was an actual folder and I would print off things to put in it.

Her rationale was that most people wouldn't remember your "wins." 

And often we would forget them - or not even acknowledge them.

As an entrepreneur, I find that this file is even more important.

So many of us are 

go - go - go, 
do - do - do
Then rest or spend time with family

We never stop to celebrate the smallest wins.

And when we don't train our brains to look for small wins... our brains won’t find them.

And when you're having one of those days that inevitably happens as an entrepreneur - it's a great time to look at that brag file...

✅ the client you helped start her business...

✅ the client that you helped find the gaps in her funnel to almost double her revenue...

✅ the business friend that you listened to...when they just needed to talk through things...

whatever a win looks like - capture it with a screenshot or copy and paste - and put it into a dedicated file for your brags.

Speaking a second language can be a tricky thing.

How a simple mix-up of letters can lead to hilarious situations.

I was studying abroad in Moscow living in a dorm with a group of Americans and Europeans. 

Our Russian level was OK but not great. 

One day, my friend Wendy had a guest over — a former exchange student from America, named Natasha.

 We were downstairs in the lobby of our dorm and Wendy wanted to introduce me to her friend.

Wendy was being funny and was making a big production out of introducing me to her.

She wanted to introduce me as her "neighbor" Karen.

The word  she wanted to use was "SOSEDKA."

Unfortunately she mixed up two letters.

She said "SOSISKA"

She swapped
E -> I
D -> S

This turned "my neighbor Karen"...  into

"My Hotdog Karen"

Natasha and I burst out laughing, while Wendy didn't realize what she had said.

When we explained, we all had a good laugh.  (Including everyone in the lobby)

Natasha and I became fast friends and never let Wendy forget this incident.

How Traveling to 35+ Countries Sharpened My Writing

Imagine standing in the heart of Tbilisi, Georgia. 

Around you, the city pulses with life, yet the letters on the street signs might as well be drawings from an ancient civilization. 

I didn’t know the language or alphabet.

So I had to go back to basics.

When I tried to communicate - I had to say things in the simplest of terms:

➡️ Command Form - Go, Come, Find
➡️ No Filler Words - nothing extra
➡️ No Nuance - subtleties are lost
➡️ Active Voice - passive voice is too confusing
➡️ Common Vocabulary - no jargon
Visuals - gestures, pointing, etc.

Whenever I sit down to edit my work, I transport myself back to the bustling streets of Tbilisi and ask myself:

Is this clear? 
Can this be simpler?

As writers, we often get lost in our world of words.

We forget that the purpose of writing is to communicate and to be understood.

What lessons have you learned from traveling?



P.S.  Confession:  I was able to cheat - since I speak Russian and many people there also speak it.

In working with lots of clients,

I find that business owners who have this mindset succeed. 

What is it? 👇

Curiosity.

They
✔ ask questions
✔ are interested in exploring options
✔ are open to coaching
✔ know they don't know all the answers

These business owners make progress the fastest.

There's a balance - you can't be curious all the time.

But too often business owners will dismiss things that could be useful.

Or aren't willing to explore new ways of doing things.

If you make sales from your list for your
• Courses
• Programs
• Subscriptions

• Newsletter Sponsorships

Should you risk putting it into the hands of someone inexpensive on Fiverr?

Or try to do it yourself?

I’ve helped people this past week with both scenarios.

𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝟏𝐬𝐭 𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐨𝐧 𝐡𝐢𝐫𝐞𝐝 𝐬𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐨𝐧𝐞 𝐨𝐧 𝐅𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐫.
(Nothing wrong with Fiverr for some things.)

They added code  - but they made some assumptions about this client’s business and didn’t ask any questions.

Because they didn’t know all the programs that were used, they only added code for their Email Service Provider.  

But they didn’t add any code for their Google Workspaces or course platform account.

Plus they set the strictest DMARC policy.

When they sent emails, they were getting errors.  

We were able to fix the errors but they will need some time to repair their sender reputation.


𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝟐𝐧𝐝 𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐨𝐧 𝐭𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐝 𝐭𝐨 𝐝𝐨 𝐢𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐦𝐬𝐞𝐥𝐯𝐞𝐬.

And in theory, they did it correctly according to their Email Service Provider.

But most Email Service Providers gave incorrect or incomplete information - especially with the DMARC records (ie ConvertKit).

We were able to fix their DMARC record and set up some tools to monitor their emails for issues.

Unfortunately, they had been sending emails as usual after they authenticated. So I created a plan for HOW to email from now on.

Remember there are 3 aspects to Email Authentication

1. 𝐓𝐞𝐜𝐡𝐧𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥 
Adding the Code

2. 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐱𝐭 
Understanding your business, what programs you use, the metrics for your email list, etc.

3. 𝐒𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐠𝐲
What to do before and after authentication

If you haven’t taken all these three areas into consideration - you will have issues.

Your emails may not reach your subscribers inbox - impacting your deliverability and your income.

If you make money with your email list, 𝙩𝙖𝙠𝙚 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙣𝙚𝙘𝙚𝙨𝙨𝙖𝙧𝙮 𝙨𝙩𝙚𝙥𝙨 𝙩𝙤 𝙥𝙧𝙤𝙩𝙚𝙘𝙩 𝙞𝙩.

The Power of "Undercover Benefits"

Most businesses love to tell you about the technical details of their product or service.

While I won’t say that this information is not important, it’s not the ONLY information you need to share about your product or service.

You need to let people know what’s in it for them!

It’s the difference between Features and Benefits.

Features are all the facts.

Benefits are how this product or service will change the buyer’s life.

But that’s not really enough.

I would argue that you need to go deeper.

The benefit beneath the benefit.

What I call the “Undercover Benefits.”

Here’s an example.

If you ask someone why they want a Content Marketing Strategy for LinkedIn, they may say:

✅Benefit:  “I want to build my personal brand.”

If you probe with some more questions they might say 

✅✅Benefit beneath the benefit:   I want a personal brand so that I can share my thoughts and experiences on various topics

With some more discussions, you may finally get the real reason.

✅✅✅Undercover Benefit:  I want a personal brand so that I can share my thoughts & experiences on various topics because my company may be acquired soon and I need to build my brand to be prepared for a new position.

Do you see how the “Undercover Benefit” is much deeper?

People will usually give you the superficial reason first.

With some pointed questions you will get to the heart of the matter.

Undercover Benefits

So HOW do we get to the Undercover Benefits?

Many people will recommend that you ask the question “why” over and over.

I would suggest that you don’t always get the best answers.

For example, if you’re a career coach.  You have a program to learn how to interview better.

Typical features:

🔸You get 6 1:1 calls
🔸You get access to the Transform Your Interviews workbook
🔸Access to the free Facebook Group
🔸Group Hotseats

While those are good features - are they different from all the other career coaches?

Are people tossing and turning at night because they want to find a program with 6 1:1 calls?

Instead, you need to get to the heart of the matter.

If you’re trying to identify the benefits of the program, I would alternate between 2 phrases:

1. So what?
2. Why should they care?

For instance:

➡️You get 6 1:1 calls

So what?

➡️So that you can work on practicing your interview skills.

Why should I care about that?

➡️Well, with better interview skills you can get better job offers.

Anytime you write a feature or benefit - ask those questions to yourself.  

Several times.

Keep going until you’re at the absolute bottom.

You’ve now reached the REAL reason people are interested in your program.

The reason they NEED your help.

Those are the Undercover Benefits.

It's impossible to elucidate how important it is for you to speak to someone that really understands the technical backend of email rules, setup, and the jargon, especially given the new rules as of April 1. 

I thought all of my email protocols were perfectly established and needed nothing. . I was very wrong, and have been for many years.

Your email open rate should be 40%+

A controversial opinion for sure.

But here’s why 👇

A good open rate is between 18% - 28%* (depending on the industry and other factors).

With Apple’s Mail Privacy Protection change in 2021, the program marks all emails as “open” - whether a person has actually opened your email or not.

That means that your actual open rate is inflated anywhere between 5% to 15%.

So if you’re open rate is 40% - it’s probably closer to 25-30%.

Does that mean you shouldn’t measure your open rate?

No.

You can use that open rate to look at long-term trends.

But other indicators like click-thru rate and reply rate are more reliable.

How do you measure the effectiveness of your email marketing?

What's one thing you can do today 

to up-level your copy? 

Adding Specificity.

The more specific you are in your copy, the easier it is to connect with people.

People often tell me “It’s like you’re in my head.” 

Why?  I listen very carefully to the way they describe their problems.  

I write down what they say.

Word for word.

So that I can be VERY specific in my copy.

Think about the difference between these two stories.

Story #1 

I had  the chance of a lifetime to jump off a high cliff. I was so scared but at the same time excited.  I finally made the decision and leaped.  It was exhilarating.  

OR

Story #2 

I quickly peeked over the edge of the cliff.  
The distance seemed immeasurable. 
I realized this is my only chance to jump off this type of high cliff.  
They said it was safe. 

With my heart in my throat, I swung my arms and took a big leap off the edge of the cliff. 

The air was rushing past my ears and it was deafening.  
My eyes were sealed shut tight. 
I held my breath waiting for the impact that I knew was coming.  
It hit like a brick wall against my feet. 
I plunged beneath the water into an eerie silence.

Which one is more interesting?  

Why?

It’s all the details.  You almost feel like you’re there.

So, the next time you’re writing for your potential clients, include more details!

Often we're going through the motions.
Our business has maybe changed, grown or adapted along the way.

But we're still doing the same tasks or systems that are no longer serving us.

Here are some questions to ask yourself:

❓ What am I doing well...and want to keep doing
❓ What is something I want to start doing
❓ What is something that I should stop doing

When you go through this exercise, you start to have a broader perspective on your business.
