Stop making career decisions by how much money you'll make.

It might get you going, but you'll never compete with the person doing what they love each day. At one point, you'll fall behind in skill and motivation.

Money is a by-product. Not the point.

Why you must start saying no:

At the start of 2023, I was coaching, consulting, leading a group cohort, posting three weekly threads, writing a newsletter, affiliating, and running ads.

It was chaos, and I was stuck at $10k/month.

But then I focused on doing three things well:
• Building products
• Social content
• My newsletter

My income plummeted by 80%, but I had space to learn, think, and put more care into my craft. 3 months later, my growth catapulted because I could execute the fundamentals better.

If you spread too thin, your output will be unremarkable. And online, that’s a death sentence.

Stop saying yes to everything. To do great work, embrace saying no.

A mistake I’ve made with writing over the past three years:

Not building assets that compound.

Recently, I’ve been considering a brand overhaul and a new website. During the initial meeting, the expert explained he would transfer my content carefully to avoid ruining the SEO.

I told him I didn’t care because most of my stuff doesn’t reflect where I’m taking my business.

How stupid is that?

I’ve spent three years creating content with a three-month shelf life. I’ve learned a lot in the process, but the point of writing is to build a body of work that represents you for decades, not days.

If you don’t build timeless assets, you will be stuck on a treadmill for the rest of your career.

Timeless means evergreen. The stuff people care about today just as much as they will in ten years. You might grow slower initially, but you’ll be grateful in a few years.

Long-term games.

An observation:

Almost every account I know that started as anonymous has now pivoted to a personal brand.

This is a reflection of the truth:

People follow people.

Content is about creating a connection. Lean into who you are.

Your job isn't to say smart things.

Your job is to learn smart things and then make them easy to understand.

Naval Ravikant once said you’ll never get rich renting out your time.

You need a way to solve problems at scale: products.

The best products have no or low marginal cost of replication:
• Books
• Software
• Digital courses
• Physical goods
• Paid newsletters

The downside is that a good product can have huge upfront costs in time, energy, or money. My course High Impact Writing has taken hundreds of hours to build. But it’s also grossed $561,000 — and will continue to compound with every email.

Products aren’t passive income, but they are scalable.

We should celebrate people who quit their careers just as much as those who succeed in them.

It takes guts to start again from scratch.

Everyone in life has something they can be great at. The mistake is not exploring enough to find it.

A critical skill:

Being able to reframe a tough situation.

I discovered this when I was diagnosed with a neurological tumour and a broken neck as a teenager: You don’t get to choose what cards you’re dealt in life, but you can always choose your interpretation.

Here’s the truth:

If you become upset when things go wrong, they only get worse.

If you become overwhelmed when things get tough, they only get tougher.

If you become fearful when things get risky, they only get more terrifying.

These are self-fulfilling cycles.

But when you build a habit of seeing things in their best light, you shrink the problem. You turn negatives into positives and obstacles into opportunities.

Always search for a better angle.

There are no problems. Only challenges.

Your writing will improve if you treat it like a 1-1 conversation. If you try write to everyone, you write to no one.

Write when thinking.
Walk when deciding.
Speak when struggling.

You pay a mentor for knowledge, but what you gain is speed. They've spent years figuring out what you can grasp in months.

If you haven't written about it, you haven't thought about it.

You will enjoy writing much more if you stop telling people what to do and start showing them what you did.

There's nothing wrong with taking less risks.

But don't complain when it takes more time. You can't have it all.

I grew up in a military school.

One lesson stuck with me:

A leader never delegates what they’re not willing to do themselves. If you want people to work for you, you must show that you’re willing to work just as hard as them.
