Most advertisers have no idea what they're doing on LinkedIn 🤦🏽‍♂️

How do I know? I audit dozens of accounts every month, and I find 3 key areas they miss:

1. Technical configurations: misuse of Matched Audiences, Conversions, or Campaign Settings correctly.
2. Creative selection: misuse of ad formats, types, and sequencing.
3. Funnel structure: misuse of Campaign Objectives, funnel layers, and efficiency.

I run strategy, which essentially means I handle:
- Pre-sales strategy for prospects
- Training our team to manage LinkedIn ads
- Working with high-value accounts to perform better

It's my job to ensure we're working with the right clients.

The ones who are a good fit for us and have a good shot of turning LinkedIn into a strong channel.

Does retargeting on LinkedIn actually work?

It doesn't for many, and here's why:

There's no inherent value in retargeting.

It doesn't magically create a need.

And just because someone visited your website doesn't mean that slapping them around with strong CTA ads will convert them.

I see this A LOT when auditing accounts.

-Lead Gen Forms in your Cold Layer
-Lead Gen Forms in your Retargeting Layer
-Website Conversion campaigns everywhere!

So why do I love retargeting so much?

Like other strategies, it's a tool in your belt, but this is one special.

It allows you to do two powerful things:

1. Increase the frequency that prospects see your content
2. Increase the variety of content shown in a given period

For many marketers targeting a broad audience (30k+), your Cold Layer ad frequency will be somewhere between 1-2 in a 30-day period.

❓Question: how many ads do you remember from last week?

Seeing one or two pieces of content in a month isn't enough to become memorable.

Sure, there are artificial ways to constrain that audience size, but you'd still be missing a key ingredient:

⭐️ Action

Prospects who make it into your Retargeting Layer took action to get there.

Filtering prospects who took action and filling your Retargeting Layer allows you to increase the ad frequency to 5-10+ in a 30-day period.

Now, you get many more opportunities to build trust, educate, and nurture prospects toward conversion.

When done right, you create a journey for prospects.

Target audience size: 8,000,000+

Ruh-roh, Raggy 🐕

Forecasted Results are only good for 2 things:

1. Telling you when you made a boo-boo
2. Analyzing your targeting output (and when you made a boo-boo)

Yeah, LinkedIn "recommends" an audience size of 50,000.

But do you know what they also recommend?

A daily budget for every campaign of $150.

Let's chill out a bit LinkedIn.

Now, we talked about audience sizes yesterday, and I told you what?

A "good" audience size depends on what the heck you're trying to do.

And if what you're trying to do is not waste money, then listen up.

Location = Permanent

Company Size - pick ones that match the persona (don't add 5k+ employees if you're targeting CXO+ -- I promise you they don't check their LinkedIn).

AND

Company Industry - some personas aren't going to be horizontal, so pick accordingly.

AND

Job Title / Function - Pick the right ones for the right company sizes you're going after here.  Don't go for the CEOs of 10k+ companies.

AND

Seniority - if you didn't use Job Titles, you can use this one.  Senior is a tricky one - think of a doctor or accountant where they're not entry-level but doesn't have any direct reports.

What about "OR" you say?

You can use "OR" when you're doing a Company List OR an industry AND company size.

You can mix and match these things, but the logic needs to make sense.

More times than I can count, I've popped into an account and found that they did:

CEO 

OR

Industry = Computer Software

OR

Company size = 11-10,000+

You're targeting the world at that point.

When in doubt, err on the side of a smaller audience.

Better to spend money on inflated CPMs due to a hyper-restricted audience than to waste money targeting the wrong people.

We averaged 31.75 new clients/mo for the last 12 months.

That's more than 1 new client a day.

Can you guess what challenge emerged?

No -- it wasn't the long hours staring at a screen.

Although, that was a bit tough.

It was the handoff process.
(Sales > Service)

Let's break it down:

When you're small, you have the initial conversations, and you work directly with the client or with your team who works with the client.

You know everything that has happened because you were there.

You own the process from start to finish.

As you grow, you have to delegate more and work with teams.

And when you grow as quickly as we do, you're building the plane in the air, except the plane is going faster and faster.

What suffers?

Communication.

So, how did the hero escape?

Well, they had a few tools at their disposal:

1. Sales call transcript(s)
2. Contract (+ red lines)
3. Email threads
4. NDA (sometimes)
5. Intake form(s)

If you work in Service Delivery, you've basically got a short novel to read when you take on a new client.

Not to mention, you need to get to know more about the client yourself.

It's a lot, dude.

So, our hero used the power of AI 😅 to aggregate and template an output with all the useful data the Service Delivery team would need.

[I can't keep using the superhero story anymore - it's cringing me out]

I'll just tell you what we did:

1. Took all of the items I listed above
2. Threw them in Claude
3. Create a prompt to output the exact details we need in a templated format
(I iterated on this prompt a bunch of times!)

BAM! 💥

The output is golden, baby girl!

Not only does Service Delivery get all the pertinent details from all lines of communication with the client at that point -

They also get those tiny details they may have missed had they been sifting through everything manually.

The prompt even searches for discrepancies between what clients said on a call or email vs. what they filled out in the intake form.

(good things to clarify during your onboarding call)

Now I just need to find a way to automate more of the process 🤔
