98% recycling rate for food waste in South Korea

South Korea has implemented a highly effective food waste management system, recycling 98% of its food waste. This success is largely due to the establishment of facilities like the Daejeon Bioenergy Center, which converts food waste into green energy for 20,000 households. The country's transformation over 20 years, from discarding nearly all food waste to recycling almost all of it, was achieved by banning food scraps from landfills, requiring residents to separate waste, and charging fees for waste disposal. These efforts make South Korea one of the few nations with a nationwide food waste management system.

Globally, food waste remains a significant issue, with up to 31% of food being wasted, contributing to 6-8% of global emissions. The United Nations estimates that $ 1 trillion is lost annually due to food waste. Countries and cities worldwide are beginning to adopt similar measures, but few have matched South Korea's scale and effectiveness in addressing food waste.

What the challenges for such initiatives? 

Despite its success in recycling food waste, South Korea still faces challenges, such as the difficulty in reducing the overall amount of food waste generated and the complexities of sorting waste correctly. While recycling is efficient, issues arise when non-compostable items are mistakenly included, leading to potential mechanical breakdowns at recycling facilities. Moreover, certain aspects of the South Korean model, like biogas production, may not be adaptable to other climates or countries due to different environmental and economic conditions.

What are the key learnings of such initiatives for food producers and retailers? 

The key lesson from South Korea's experience is the importance of reducing food waste at the source. While recycling is crucial, the most significant benefits come from minimizing waste in the first place which results in significant cost reduction for businesses. South Korea's example highlights the need for comprehensive strategies that include both waste reduction and effective recycling systems, particularly as global food waste continues to be a major environmental and economic issue.

What are the benefit for food waste iniatives for food producers and retailers?

Berlin is tackling rising temperatures and water shortages by transforming into a "sponge city" through the construction of large underground basins to capture and store rainwater. The largest basin, set to hold nearly 17,000 cubic meters of water, will be completed by 2026. This infrastructure aims to prevent sewage overflows during heavy rains, reducing environmental damage and protecting the city's waterways.

In addition to the basins, Berlin is addressing the issue of impermeable surfaces that prevent rainwater from naturally seeping into the ground. The city has established a "rainwater agency" to guide developers in incorporating green infrastructure, such as green roofs and ponds, into new projects. These initiatives ensure that rainwater is managed more effectively, preventing it from overwhelming the sewage system.

Berlin's regulations now require that new developments limit the amount of rainwater entering the sewage system. By adopting sustainable water management practices, businesses can not only comply with these regulations but also reduce their operational costs. Green infrastructure can lower energy costs by cooling buildings, reduce water usage through rainwater harvesting, and even increase property values by enhancing urban spaces.

These measures offer significant financial benefits for #businesses, including #costsavings on #water and #energy, as well as potential #tax incentives for sustainable practices. In the last 2 years there were 300 new legislations accepted on the topic of ESG worldwide. The list is longer if you adjust the definition of ESG. Since then there has been debates about the difference between the role of #ESG, #sustainability and #CSR activities in a company and the economic impact of each on the financial success of a company. 

So what is the difference between ESG, CSR and sustainability? 

ESG focuses on measurable criteria that investors use to evaluate a company's ethical and sustainable practices. CSR involves a company's broader efforts to positively impact society and build goodwill. Sustainability centers on long-term environmental and resource management to ensure future viability.

Chilean desert covered in clothes? 

The accumulation of clothing waste in Chile's Atacama Desert is a stark reminder of the environmental and social challenges posed by the global fast fashion industry. Every year, over 60,000 tonnes of secondhand clothing—mostly from countries like the US, China, South Korea, and the UK—are shipped to Chile. While some garments find new life in local markets, most end up in illegal dumps in the desert. The sight of discarded clothing which can take up to 200 years to decompose, underscores the urgent need for change. The global fast fashion market size was worth around USD 60.50 billion in 2022 and is predicted to grow to around USD 179.50 billion by 2030 with a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of roughly 14.56% between 2023 and 2030.

The fast fashion industry's rapid growth has led to a surge in low-cost clothing production and increased consumption, resulting in 92 million tonnes of textile waste annually. Many consumers donate unwanted clothes to charity, believing they will be reused, but the sheer volume and declining quality of fast fashion mean much of it cannot be sold domestically and is instead exported to developing countries. This cycle often ends in illegal dumping, creating environmental hazards and harming local communities.

What are the ways fashion companies can address overproduction?

1. Embrace Circular Fashion: Design clothes for reuse, recycling, or repurposing, and focus on sustainable materials and product durability.
2. Implement Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR): Hold brands accountable for the entire lifecycle of their products, encouraging sustainable practices and waste reduction.
3. Promote Sustainable Consumption: Encourage consumers to buy less but better-quality items, and educate them on the benefits of sustainable fashion.
4. Innovate Recycling Technologies: Invest in advanced recycling technologies to break down complex fabrics into reusable raw materials.
5. Foster Global Collaboration: Governments, NGOs, and private sectors must work together to enforce regulations on the global trade in textile waste.
6. Increase Supply Chain Transparency: Ensure ethical and sustainable practices across the supply chain, with brands reporting on their environmental impact.

IKEA launches a secondhand marketplace 

IKEA’s recent launch of IKEA Preowned, a peer-to-peer marketplace for buying and selling secondhand furniture, reflects a broader industry trend. While traditionally known for its affordable new furniture, IKEA's move into the secondhand market is indicative of how large retailers are adapting to these changing consumer preferences. This strategy is not just about capturing a new market segment, but also about responding to the growing expectation for businesses to contribute to a circular economy.

The furniture industry is at a pivotal moment, with shifts in consumer behaviour and sustainability becoming increasingly central to business strategies. The rise of secondhand marketplaces is one of the key developments driving this transition. ≈3x emissions in 3 years? 

Two important reports came out in the last few days on from The Business of Fashion and Business Insider (links below) about SHEIN and Temu, two of the fastest growing fast-commerce companies. 

What are the key insights?

- Toxic Substances Found: Shoes from Shein and Temu contained toxic substances at levels hundreds of times above legal limits, according to South Korean health authorities.
  
- Phthalates in Shein Products: High levels of phthalates, harmful to reproductive health, were found in Shein shoes—one pair had 229 times the legal limit.

- Lead in Temu Products: Temu's sandal insoles contained lead levels 11 times above the legal limit.

- Company Responses: Both Shein and Temu removed the affected products from their sites and launched internal investigations.

- Previous Violations: Shein has a history of violations, including finding a pair of shoes with 428 times the legal phthalate limit in a previous investigation.

- Shein’s Environmental Impact: Shein's carbon footprint has nearly tripled in the last three years, surpassing major fashion companies, and posing challenges to its public listing ambitions.

What are the economic impacts of the fast fashion industry? 

The fast fashion industry generates significant economic losses by creating vast amounts of waste and relying on unsustainable practices. Rapid production cycles lead to excessive textile waste, increasing disposal costs and straining municipal systems. Additionally, the industry’s dependence on cheap labor results in poor working conditions and wage suppression, which can destabilize supply chains and lead to costly disruptions and legal challenges. 

These factors not only burden economies but also pose long-term risks to brand profitability and sustainability as consumer and regulatory pressures for corporate responsibility increase. Both Shein and Temu have rapidly grown in popularity in the US, with Shein valued at $100 billion in 2022 and Temu seeing a 700% increase in website traffic in 2023.

For reference 16.7 million emissions equates to: 

-Annual emissions from over 3.6 million cars: This is based on the average car in the U.S., which emits about 4.6 metric tonnes of CO2 annually.
-Electricity use for 2.8 million homes: The average U.S. home emits around 6 tonnes of CO2 per year from electricity usage.
-Burning approximately 18 billion pounds of coal: This amount of coal would produce about 16.7 million tonnes of CO2 when burned.

Lessons from the UK to Reduce Dependency on Coal

1. Implement Carbon Pricing: Introducing a carbon tax or carbon pricing mechanism can make coal less economically viable, encouraging a shift to cleaner energy sources.

2. Set Clear Emission Reduction Targets: Establishing legally binding targets for reducing greenhouse gas emissions can drive policy changes and market shifts away from coal.

3. Invest in Renewable Energy: Government investment and subsidies for renewable energy can accelerate the development and adoption of these technologies, reducing the need for coal.

4. Modernize the Electricity Grid: Upgrading the grid to handle a higher share of renewables and ensure energy security is crucial for reducing coal dependency.

5. Encourage Public and Private Divestment from Coal: Encouraging financial institutions and investors to divest from coal and invest in cleaner alternatives can reduce the flow of capital to coal projects.

6. Promote Public Awareness and Support: Building public support for renewable energy and climate action can create the political momentum necessary to phase out coal.

Berlin's public transport operator, Berliner Verkehrsbetriebe (BVG), is currently testing Hydrotreated Vegetable Oils (HVO) as an alternative fuel for their bus fleet. This fuel, derived from treated vegetable oils, including waste cooking fat, presents a significant opportunity for industries looking to reduce emissions without the need to replace existing diesel engines.

How does HVO work? 
HVO can power diesel engines while substantially reducing greenhouse gas emissions. According to the Federal Ministry of Transport, HVO100—now available at gas stations across Germany—can cut emissions by over 90% compared to diesel. Since the CO2 released during combustion comes from renewable sources, the overall impact is close to climate-neutral, with only production emissions affecting the balance.

For various sectors, HVO offers a practical way to meet sustainability targets and respond to regulatory pressures:

US backs global target to reduce plastic production

The United States has shifted its position to support a global treaty aimed at reducing plastic production, aligning itself with other nations that seek to phase down plastic manufacturing. This marks a departure from the U.S.'s previous stance, which favored allowing individual countries to decide on plastic production limits. 

The policy shift aligns the U.S. with high-ambition nations like the EU, South Korea, and Canada, who advocate for capping plastic production and phasing out harmful chemicals used in plastic manufacturing. However, this move faces opposition from countries like Saudi Arabia and China, which prefer focusing on waste management and recycling rather than production restrictions.

The decision has broad implications for industries like plastics, petrochemicals, and manufacturing, as it introduces the possibility of new global regulations that could cap production and ban certain chemicals. Companies in these sectors may face increased costs due to tighter regulations and possible shifts toward alternative materials. 

This policy shift could lead to significant changes in supply chains, product design, and compliance costs across multiple industries globally.

The fashion industry stands at a pivotal crossroads. With the urgent need to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, many wonder if sustainability and profitability can truly go hand in hand. The good news? 55% of the levers required to cut 1.7 billion tonnes of GHG emissions by 2030 actually generate cost savings.

Take logistics, for example. By shifting to 90% sea and 10% air transport, the industry could save over $600 per tonne of GHG emissions abated. Even simple changes like reducing polybag use and limiting corrugated boxes to three-ply can deliver significant savings. Furthermore, cutting e-commerce return rates from 35% to 15% through data-driven consumer insights could save nearly $360 per tonne of GHG emissions abated.

However, not all sustainability efforts are cost-neutral. For instance, the use of sustainable materials like recycled polyester (rPET) may add costs—around $60 per tonne of GHG emissions abated. But it’s important to remember that 89% of abatement can be achieved at a cost of less than $50 per tonne—a relatively modest investment for long-term impact.

This data-driven approach, visualized through an industry-level cost curve, helps brands understand the economic viability of various decarbonisation strategies. The curve reveals the potential savings and costs, encouraging brands to develop their own tailored sustainability roadmaps.

The message is clear: Sustainable practices aren't just good for the planet - they're also increasingly good for business. As we move towards 2030, the fashion industry has a unique opportunity to lead the way in both reducing emissions and enhancing profitability.
