Patagonia just published its first even Sustainability Report

After 50 years of redefining responsible business, Patagonia just published  their first-ever sustainability progress report. 

What is the big takeaway from the report? 

Transparency beats perfection.

The company has spent decades focusing on action over storytelling. Their report opens with a bold admission: "Nothing we do is sustainable." This honesty is what makes it valuable.

What are the key milestones highlighted? 
→ The report reveals that transformative change comes from long-term commitment, rather than quick wins. 
→ Since 1985, their 1% sales pledge has inspired over 4,000 businesses. Their organic cotton initiative transformed their supply chain. 
→ They built North America's largest repair center, pioneering circular economy practices before it was trendy.

What do they share about decarbonisation? 
That it is expensive, time-consuming, and unglamorous. Patagonia doesn't own their factories and has limited leverage, yet they're developing creative financing models to treat emission reductions as investible assets.

Collaborative decarbonisation for increased efficiency  
Patagonia once viewed sustainability leadership as competitive advantage. Now they recognise nothing changes if they act alone. They're backing regulatory bills, building coalitions, and openly sharing their playbook because systemic problems require collective solutions.

What is the bottom line? 
At $1.47 billion in revenue, Patagonia proves that long-term commitment to purpose doesn't conflict with business viability rather it enables it.

For sustainability leaders, CEOs and board members in textile, fashion and beyond, the question is whether you're building the infrastructure, relationships, and resolve to keep pushing when it's difficult, expensive, and decidedly unsexy. Also if you are starting early enough with the efforts to decarbonise.

Fashion in 2026 faces a "fundamentally new reality" where constant change is the new normal.

What is the sustainability story? 

Economic necessity meets circularity. Sustainability isn't being driven by executive priority but by economic necessity and consumer behaviour.

The secondhand market is exploding, with a $317 billion global market expected by 2027—growing 2-3x faster than the primary market. Consumer adoption is accelerating: 59% globally plan to shop resale in 2026, with over 70% in China, including wealthy shoppers seeking deals. 

What's striking is that 61% of consumers would continue buying secondhand even with more money to spend, driven by the thrill of discovery, access to unique items, and environmental values. This isn't about affordability alone—it's a fundamental shift in how people consume fashion.

The industry's sustainability journey has moved through distinct phases: "Sustainability First" (2017-2019) gave way to "Sustainability Stalemate" (2020-2023) as momentum slowed. By 2024-2025, the focus shifted to circularity, climate urgency, and tackling greenwashing. Now in 2026, sustainability is finally integrated into core business models.

In 2026, sustainability has become inseparable from business success. The paradigm has shifted—sustainability isn't about doing good, it's about revenue generation through resale markets, operational efficiency through AI and technology, brand differentiation in a value-driven market, customer loyalty among conscious consumers, and risk mitigation against supply chain disruptions.

The old playbook was linear: 

Make → Sell → Dispose. 

The new playbook is circular: 

Make → Sell → Resell → Recapture Value → Build Loyalty

Circularity is becoming a competitive advantage. Asia, especially China, is leading the charge. The brands thriving aren't treating circularity as a side project but are building it into their core value proposition.

Today COP30 Brazil starts.

As the conference convenes in Belem, Brazil (10-21 November), here are the expected outcomes and key resources to follow. 

How does this COP matter to the business world?

For sustainable finance professionals, COP30 sets the architecture for mobilising trillions in climate capital. The transition from $300B to $1.3T annually creates unprecedented opportunities in green bonds, blended finance, and carbon markets.

For sustainability and decarbonsation experts, the enhanced NDCs will drive regulatory frameworks and carbon pricing mechanisms that reshape sectoral roadmaps across energy, transport, manufacturing, and agriculture.

For CEOs, this is the inflection point where climate commitments translate into market expectations, investor demands, and competitive differentiation. Given geopolitical shifts, the key outcomes will mainly impact strategy and finance. 

What are the key expected outcomes? 

Enhanced National Climate Plans (NDCs) - Countries are submitting updated commitments with a target to cut global emissions by 60% by 2030 (current plans only deliver 10%). The ambition gap must be closed. *For decarbonization professionals: These targets will cascade into sector-specific regulations, carbon pricing adjustments, and supply chain decarbonization mandates that reshape industrial strategies.

Climate finance roadmap - The “Baku to Belém Roadmap” aims to scale funding from $300 billion to $1.3 trillion annually by 2035 to support developing nations’ climate action. For finance leaders: This represents the largest capital mobilization opportunity of our generation—spanning public finance, institutional investors, and innovative instruments like sustainability-linked bonds and nature credits.

Tropical Forest Forever Facility (TFFF) - Brazil’s signature initiative, a $125 billion blended-finance fund to reward forest conservation in tropical countries, with payouts beginning in 2026. For CEOs and investors: This creates a proven model for results-based nature finance that can be replicated across ecosystems and geographies.

International adaptation framework - The metrics systems might become clearer. 100 global indicators are expected to be established to track climate adaptation progress, making results measurable across nations. Personal highlight. 

Just Transition Work Programme - Ensuring the shift to clean economies is equitable and leaves no one behind.

Global emissions jumped 2.3% last year to 57.7 gigatonnes UNEP. We're moving in the wrong direction, and fast.

The United Nations just released their 2025 Emissions Gap Report, and the numbers tell a sobering story. Even if every country delivers on their climate promises, and let's be honest, most aren't on track, we're headed for 2.3-2.5°C of warming by century's end UNEP. That's well above the 1.5°C target everyone agreed to in Paris.
What the data shows:

→Only 60 countries (covering 63% of emissions) have submitted new climate targets
→We need to cut emissions by 35% by 2035 just to stay below 2°C
→For the ambitious 1.5°C goal? That requires a 55% cut
→We'll likely breach 1.5°C within the next decade

But here's what gives me hope:
Ten years ago, we were on track for 3-3.5°C of warming. Today, that's down to around 2.4°C. Progress is slow, but it's real.
And the business case for clean energy has never been stronger. For the first time ever, renewables surpassed coal as the world's largest electricity source in the first half of 2025 InsightsIAS. Solar and wind keep getting cheaper. The technology works.

What this means for business?

Every degree matters. Not just for the planet but for the bottom line. Higher temperatures mean supply chain chaos, regulatory whiplash, and stranded assets. The companies that move now will avoid the rush and capture the upside.

Climate finance needs to triple by 2030.

We have the tools. We just need to use them, fast.

This is the first time a report tracked China’s energy with such depth. It is a critical document to understand their energy transition and get a detailed picture of China’s accelerating clean energy shift and its global consequences.

The analysis uses sources such as Chinese government data, international organisations (including International Energy Agency (IEA)), and direct expert interviews.  

Key progress points:
• Rapid growth in renewable generation across solar, wind, and hydropower
• Strong electrification trends in industry, buildings, and transport
• Deepened integration of clean energy into China’s economic framework

The drivers are:
→ Policy alignment at national and local level
→ Expanding clean energy trade and diplomacy
→ Targeted business support, especially in emerging economies

China’s energy policies and technology exports are changing the pace of global clean energy uptake. Trade channels and knowledge transfer are increasing renewables in regional markets, especially across Asia and Africa.

Three core implications for business leaders and boards:

1. China’s cost-driven clean energy models are now leading benchmarks for innovation and scale.
2. Supply chains worldwide reflect China’s growing role in clean technology and capital flows.
3. Policy and regulation outside China must adapt to new standards or risk losing market access and compliance.
