Here's my journey:

2000-2007: Acting on stages worldwide, I needed to make more money, so I resorted to serving tables and door-to-door merchant account sales.  

2008: My gateway drug for self-improvement was discovered after joining a spammy multi-level marketing company. Read 100 self-improvement books to get my head out of my ass. I never made a dime with MLN. 

2009: I taught myself how to run ads on Google after reading Perry Marshalls's Definitive Guide to Google Adwords. Then, I became the top salesperson at the payment company because of search ads.

2010: Launched a YouTube channel and taught people how to do Local SEO, then had dozens of small businesses asking me to help. So, I launched my first marketing agency. 

2011-2014: I quickly scaled that agency to 7-figures but barely kept any money because I didn't know what a P/L sheet was.

2014: I merged those agencies with two other local marketing agencies because I struggled to run the business and needed help. I learned from my new partners that my biggest mistake was charging too little.

2015 - 2018: Helped scale Canada's fastest SEM and SEO marketing agency, servicing dozens of Fortune 500 companies. However, my journey got cut short due to partner conflicts, which triggered the shotgun clause.  

2019: I launched a cold outbound agency where we spammed people via email and with LinkedIn bots. I didn't love outbound. 

2020-2021: I tested a new service where I helped busy CEOs create all their LinkedIn content in 1-hour. People loved it! So, I killed the outbound agency and turned it into an LI demand gen agency.

I suspect (UBI) Universal basic income will become available for people.

But I worry more about even if people get UBI, how will they find meaning if they are not working?  

Many people find meaning in work (like myself).

The bigger issue is that there might be a huge existential crisis, with people not knowing how to find meaning because they are not sure what to do with all that time.

Tesla laid off its entire 40-person marketing and growth content team.

Why?

I speculate that when your stock prices are falling, something has to give, and in tough times, anything that doesn't prove growth will be cut.

According to Statista, Ford spent $2.5 billion on global advertising in 2023, while General Motors spent $3.6 billion.

I don't know what Telsa spends on their advertising, but I guess it's always been much less than their competitors. 

Now, they have chosen to send another signal by laying off their whole marketing growth and content team.

What is that signal?

Those who hate him will say the company is failing and they had to make that decision to stay in business.

Those who love him will say it's because he is a leader who doesn't pay people who do not produce.

I am guessing that Musk knows most of their growth has come from his personal brand.

I am speculating that Musk feels he can send a few 280-character tweets and get a better bang for his buck.

Most marketing agency's don't practice what they preach.

They don't post content.
They don't invest in getting their content seen.

The biggest mistake I see first-time founders make is they seek perfection from their teams and vendors.

I'm all for doing great work.

But there is no such thing as perfect.

When you work with people, the goal is progress, not perfection.

If you are improving and the work is improving each week, and you show up with a positive attitude, I will continue to work with you.

It's trending in the right direction.

When it trends in the right direction and you give it enough time, it's unreasonable for it not to get pretty damn close to perfect.

Most B2B founders build a personal brand on LI to generate leads and drive revenue, but that is just the tip of the iceberg.

It helps you become aware to other important parties, too.

The obvious one is revenue potential people (aka your ICPs)

But there are four less obvious ones:

1) Vendor awareness

Other vendors who complement or work with your ICPs need to know who you are and what your company does.  Having them mention you to their clients and customers provides you with a BIG leg up.

2) Buying committee awareness

The higher up the market you go, the more you become buying by committee. The people above and below the chain of command that you sell into better know about you, too.

They can provide INTROs and kill deals if they are not fans.

3) Expert influencer awareness

Every industry has its own experts and thought leaders.
- We watch them on stage at conferences.
- We listen to them on Podcasts.
- We follow them on the socials.

We need other smart people with bigger brands than you need to know you and, ideally, talk about you.

What they say gets heard by others.

4) Competitor awareness

If your competitors don't see objections coming up.  If they haven't built a comparison chart on why they are better than you, then you are still invisible in their minds.

You need to see them showing signals they see you as a threat.

Getting louder online via a founder's personal brand helps unlock many opportunities for your company.

This also means you must run different LI ads content campaigns targeting each group.

ONLY focusing on your perfect ICP is not enough.

It requires way more energy to break into markets or to be the best in your category.

It will not be easy.

But there are some shortcuts you can take.

I know because I've helped over 100 B2B founders do this on this platform.
