What are the benefits of a high-reach approach on LinkedIn?

The fastest way to kill your business:


Be selfish.


Don’t share the wealth with your employees.

Squeeze your employees’ income so you can take home more money.

Attempt to make your business as profitable as possible, at the expense of the people who work with you.


I’ve had people argue that “maximizing profit is good business.”

Nah, that’s pure 🐂 💩


The reality of being cheap is that you’re going to quickly lose your top performers.

Your team will underperform.

Ultimately, you will lose money.

Instead, compensate people fairly for the work they do.

Tie their compensation to both business performance and their personal contribution to the business.

When a rising tide lifts all boats, it’s much easier to keep everyone rowing in the same direction.

This one is going to upset a few of you:

If you haven't grown your business to 20 employees within 2 years of launch...

YOU WILL NOT MAKE IT TO 20+ EMPLOYEES WITHOUT OUTSIDE HELP.

This is true 99% of the time... and you aren't the exception.



I speak to founders all the time who confuse two important and distinct concepts:

1️⃣ Domain Expertise
2️⃣ Business Acumen

You cannot overcome a lack of business acumen or experience with domain expertise.

AGAIN:

You CANNOT overcome a lack of business acumen or expertise with domain expertise!


That means your 15 years of experience in an industry doesn't translate into any ability as an entrepreneur.

If you've been running your business at under 20 employees for the last 10 years (or even 2 years), you have ZERO experience that will take your business to 20+ employees.

If your experience is running a stagnated business... you don't have experience running a fast-growing business. You won't be able to shift into high-growth mode alone.

You may have 25 years experience running your business, but that often only translates into 1 year of experience repeated 25 times.



What does hubris as an entrepreneur often look like:

💀 Believing you can run a business because you have 15 years experience in *anything other than running a business.*

💀 Believing you can grow your business, when it has stagnated for more than 2 years.

💀 Trying to "do" everything in your business... your most important skill is learning to hire people with the skills your biz needs. Doing the work yourself leads to death of your org.

The most important aspect of leadership:

👉 Showing up 100% authentically 👈

Most people can't do this.

This is why most people aren't good leaders - and most people cannot ever become good leaders.

Most "leaders" show up as who they think they need to be, not who they are.

They believe that leadership is a role to play.

This couldn't be further from the truth.

Leadership is a way of life.

True leadership is a 24/7/365 responsibility.

True leadership is not transacted through words.


Real leaders are authentic and unshakable.

They are deeply rooted in their authenticity.

They are unshakable in their authenticity - but never rigid.


If you consider yourself to be a leader - know that people are watching you at all times.

They pay attention to:

👑 How you speak

👑 How you dress

👑 The decisions you make

👑 What you eat

👑 The way you conduct yourself

👑 Where you live

👑 Who you surround yourself with

👑 How you look


Case in point, my commitment to leadership includes choices such as:

🫡 Being a demonstrably good father & husband

🫡 Building a team of absolute rock stars

🫡 Committing to fitness and clean eating

🫡 Dressing and speaking in a manner that is authentic to me

🫡 Pushing myself outside my comfort zone as an example to other

🫡 Consistently challenging others to be their best




PS - I don't believe that everyone is born with equal leadership potential. Most people can take on a leadership role for a time, but they are not themselves leaders.

FEAR.

It’s always the same in amount and severity.

Fear never changes. 

But you change.

The more that you overcome fear, the braver you become.

The braver you are, the easier fear is to overcome.

But it fear doesn’t change.

Fear like a 200lbs (90kg) weight.

That weight will always be the same weight.

But YOU can change yourself, get stronger, so that 200lbs feels light.

So the only way to overcome your fear is to face it.

You must take action in spite of your fears.

Or live with those fears towering over you.

(or more dead than it's ever been)


Too many people are still following the Justin Welsh 2020 playbook... 🤦‍♂️

Now, don’t get it twisted. You can still get inbounds. It’s still happening.

But to build and scale off inbounds alone is foolish, and it's only getting more foolish.

Content is a sales amplifier.

Content gets prospects to pick up the phone and reply to your messages.

Content allows your sales engine to work and bring you the deal flow necessary to grow.

But the question becomes: What type of content? Where should I post? How often should I post? What sort of funnel do I need to have?

I decided to pull in my Chief Content Officer, Doug Lawson into the mix for this.

Top 🎱 Tips to Dominate on LinkedIn:


1️⃣ Only connect with your ICP

Only connect with people who match your ICP. The only exception to this rules is if they are an IRL friend or a really cool creator who you want to support.

Your connection list should be a rich pool of prospects. Connecting with non-ICPs dilutes the effectiveness of your content & outreach.


2️⃣ Send connections no message

Data shows that connections are accepted at a much higher rate when there is no message included. If people aren’t accepting your connection requests, change the following things: your headline, your photo, how your name is presented, your about me section.

Including a message with your connection request adds too many variables to effectively test.


3️⃣ Message every connection

You’re only connecting with your ICP, right? Send a connection request to everyone who you connect with. Daily, open up your “My Network” tab and send messages to everyone who added you in the last 24 hours

If you’ve never done this before, go through and message EVERYONE in your contact list. You will get sales. I promise.



4️⃣ There is no inbound strategy on LinkedIn

Inbound is all but dead on LinkedIn. Your content is an “Authority Building” strategy. When you build authority, you increase the likelihood that someone will reply to your messages.

So, plan on creating content AND sending outbound messages… to every one of your new contacts (see # 3).


5️⃣ Follow the advice of LinkedIn Influencers

They have a ton of followers, so they must know what they’re doing, right? JK - Just making sure you’re paying attention.

Instead, follow Alex Peralta & CT Falk.


6️⃣ No one cares about you in the messages

When you send your first messages to a prospect, never talk about yourself. “I love connecting with professionals like you…” ya, no one cares bruh. Instead, a question about something that the recipient cares about.

For example, ask a founder about their product, a marketing director about their campaign, and a developer about their code choices.


7️⃣ Build rapport through messaging

Don’t lead with value. Don’t lead with talking about yourself. A good conversationalist asks questions and listens. This is what you do in the DM’s. Don’t offer value, ask for a call, or, dear god, drop a sales pitch until you’ve built rapport with the prospect.

Ask questions until you find the entry point with the prospect. (Hint: the entry point is usually where the prospect feels stuck).


🎱 The only metric that matters on LinkedIn

There’s no publicly visible number that matters on LinkedIn… not followers, likes, etc. The ONLY metric that matters is the number of people you connect with off the platform. This means the people you get on to calls or in person meets.

Nothing else matters.

The fastest way to lose respect and effectiveness:

Play the hero.

Always swoop in to solve every problem for your team.

Take on every challenge alone, thinking you're protecting your team.

Believe that by rescuing your team from every issue, you're leading effectively.

I’ve heard leaders justify this by saying, “I’m just being supportive.”

That's a misguided approach.

The truth is, always being the rescuer disempowers your team.

Your team's growth will stagnate.

Eventually, this creates dependency, not development.

Instead, empower your team to solve problems.

Encourage autonomy and provide tools for self-resolution.

Link their growth to their ability to handle challenges independently.

When you foster an environment where everyone is encouraged to be a
problem-solver, not just a problem-reporter, you build a stronger, more resilient team.

There’s one thing that will help you close more sales, guaranteed. 

And this is… following up.

Simple, yes. 

Easy? Not for most people. 

The follow up in sales is a weird thing.

People don’t want to be rude. Or pushy. Or scammy. Or come off desperate.

And I get it.

But at the same time, sales in many cases doesn’t happen in the initial contact.

It largely happens in the follow up.

And there’s an art to it.

So I’ve brought in the absolute best to explain and break down the art of the follow up: Strategy Ladders Chief Revenue Officer, CT “I’m a walking CV” Falk!

Many folks see LinkedIn as an inbound tool.

Which kind of works...

On average, “inbound only” approaches on LinkedIn are about 25% as effective today than they were 2 years ago.

Today, the core of a good client creation strategy on LinkedIn combines content & outbound messaging to prospects who match your Ideal Client Persona (ICP).

People labor over outbound messaging… I get it, we all hate being rejected.

But it’s your content that moves the needle.

Good content will increase your reply rate 10-100x.

Why?

Because a prospect:

1. Receives a message from you
2. Checks your profile
3. Sees content that speaks to them in their current situation
4. Replies

If you’re trying to attract high-ticket clients with content that’s too generic, you’ll lose them at step #2.

It's like relying on the allure of reality TV.
It grabs attention but doesn’t convert to serious customers.

Here’s where it gets tricky.

Your content may get a lot of impressions, but if it's not hitting the specific higher-dollar issues your prospects are facing, you're not building authority.

This approach can be difficult at the beginning, because content that is highly specific & complex doesn’t get much reach.

But you’re not here for reach. You’re after dollars in the bank. 

(Trust me, the dopamine hit of $50k hitting your bank is much bigger than 50k impressions)



So, what's the game plan?

Flip the script on content creation.

Start tackling complex topics that resonate with your ICP.

Your content needs to showcase your expertise, making your LinkedIn profile a beacon of authority.

How?

1. Use diagrams.
Highlight them on your profile. Diagrams show you know your stuff, and seem highly personal because prospects fill the gaps in a diagram with their own words & experience. 

2. Write emails.
Write an email to your favorite client. Outline their issues and how you’ll solve them. Now strip out personal info and you’ve got killer LI posts. 

Once these hyper-focused pieces of content are on your profile & highlighted as featured content, you’re ready for outbound. 

Now, when a prospect receives a message from you, they look at your profile and go, "Oh 💩, this person actually knows what they're talking about."

And boom, they're more inclined to chat.

Now, mix this with daily outreach.

Dive into interactions, whether it’s with new connections, folks interacting with your stuff, or even profile lurkers.

Send them all messages (you’re messaging every new connection, right…?)

Your content is a base of authority to back up your outreach.

This combo of content & connection?

That’s your ticket to getting more valuable conversations started.

Remember, we’re not selling directly on LinkedIn.

We build rapport here, establishing trust through real connection.

Only then do we talk sales.


So, keep your content sharp, your outreach personal, and focus on delivering that value first.

That's how you turn LinkedIn into a powerhouse for founder-led selling.

I'll say it:

If you've never had employees, you can't be a business coach.

Why?

At the most basic level, if you've never:

❌ Hired

❌ Fired

❌ Lead a team

How tf will you ever guide someone to build their business.

Sure, some businesses are great to keep solo.

But what if they aren't?

If the skill of hiring and leading a team isn't in your arsenal, then how can you actually give a client the best advice?

There are times when a business switches from a great solopreneur idea, to a business that requires employees to grow.

If your coach hasn't lead a team, then they can't discern this difference.



I'm really tired of talking to people who have had their businesses ruined or months/years of business growth lost because they trusted some gooroo with 100k followers and zero biz experience.



Who are you trusting with your business?



PS - This applies to EVERYONE, no matter how many followers they have, how many videos they post, or how many funny t-shirts they own 🫢

There are two types of “stuck”:


The first type is where you're at a crossroads, unsure of the next steps.



This is typically a strategy issue: signaling a deficiency in experience, knowledge, or insight.

We call this, broadly, a strategy problem. 🧭 

My advice? Seek external help.




The second type of stuck: knowing what needs to be done but failing to act.



This is a mindset problem. 🧠 

In these cases, support should focus on altering your perspective and fostering a conducive attitude towards taking action.


I'm a firm believer in the 'Who Not How' philosophy.

It’s important to hire the right person to facilitate growth, rather than solely relying on self-education or trial and error, is a game-changer.

Hiring is often an uncomfortable investment.

But hiring people speeds development and increases accountability to growth. 



The biggest reason people get 'stuck'?

They are too comfortable. 

Even in seemingly dire situations, the familiarity of current circumstances can be more appealing than the discomfort of change.

After all, the only thing humans fear is the unknown. 

“We prefer a known hell over an unknown heaven.”



Now, let's talk about the archetype of a particularly challenging client: the risk-averse entrepreneur.

Such clients resist change, clinging to familiar methods despite their inefficacy.

This aversion to perceived “risk” stifles growth, as progression demands embracing the unfamiliar and occasionally, the uncomfortable.

This client's unwillingness to deviate from the status quo, despite clear indications that change is necessary, epitomizes the quintessential struggle in consulting.


Growth demands risk.

Without it, stagnation is inevitable.





We at Strategy Ladders simply cannot work with people who refuse to take risk.

Because without risk, you simply cannot grow. 

Risk, after all, is the spice of life 🌶️

And we like it hot 🥵

I'm f'n FIRED UP 🤬

Too many people don't understand the responsibility of running a business.

When you start a business, you're taking responsibility for the people who work for you.

This means you are responsible for their LIVELIHOODS and, in many cases, their LIVES.



If that's too much pressure, don't start a business.



Just because you run a remote agency doesn't absolve you from this responsibility.

It's your responsibility to take care of the people who work for you.

Even if they are contractors on the other side of the world.

You, as a leader, business owner, and entrepreneur, must take responsibility for these people.

Your decisions impact not just you & your bank account, but your employees, clients, and their families.


Firing someone could mean that their child doesn't get the medicine they need.

Shutting down a department and firing otherwise great employees could create stress on a family that shaves decades off of their lives.

Not building adequate safety structures & SOP's could mean an employee loses a limb or their life.

If that's too much pressure for you to think about EVERY SINGLE DAY, you don't have what it takes to run a business.



There's a lot of freelancers and solopreneurs who "dabble" in business.

These people are different from the ones I am speaking to.

When I say "business owner," I am talking to the people who are taking on these responsibilities, not people who are just building an income stream for themselves.

If you're a freelancer or solopreneur and think we both have being an "entrepreneur" in common... you are wrong.

Creating an income stream is much different than building a team for which you are responsible.



So ya, when I use a video or imagery that may disturb you... ask yourself if you're adequately disturbed by the decisions you have to make or the impact you're having on the people around you.

Chances are, I'll never share any video that shows destruction bigger than what the average business owner is capable of creating with bad decisions.

Most people waste their time networking. 

These people haven’t figured out how to effectively create value for themselves or their connections.

They spend lots of time doing “networking,” but have little to show for it. 

Unclear positioning and lack of clear purpose leaves many people with nothing to show for hours and hours of networking on LinkedIn and in person.

It's extremely common, yet rarely discussed openly.

Stop treading water and begin to take massive strides forward.

Here's how 👇

👉 Present yourself clearly:

◼ Who are you? Define your professional identity with precision. Are you a consultant, a strategist, an innovator? This clarity is your beacon.

◼ What do you do? Specify the services you offer or the value you bring. It's about framing your offerings in a way that resonates with your intended audience.

◼ Who do you work with? Who can you help? Clearly identifying the people you can positively impact will help you connect with more of them and help others learn how to refer others to you.  


◼ Why pay attention to you? Highlight what sets you apart. Is it your unique approach, your track record, or perhaps the way you solve problems?

👉 Use a value-driven approach to help others identify the value you create:

◼Solve their problem. Focus on the challenges your prospects face. How can you address these directly or indirectly through your work?

◼Send them something useful. Share resources, articles, and insights that align with their interests or needs. Add value without expecting anything in return.

◼Support their business/project. Engage with their work genuinely. Comment on their posts, celebrate their successes, offer your expertise when they face challenges.

👉 Become a connector:

◼Facilitate introductions. Introduce them to people in your network who can help them grow. Being a bridge can amplify your value.

◼Help them level up their network. Share opportunities for them to meet new people, attend relevant events, or join valuable groups.

◼Become the go-to 'connector'. Strive to be the person people think of when they need connections, advice, or a fresh perspective.

The common mistake in networking is making it all about oneself.

This inward focus is a trap that leads to the very indecision and resistance many of us experience. It's the "Me! Me! Me!" syndrome that turns potential opportunities into dead ends.

Shifting the Focus to THEM:

Building relationships, finding your niche, overcoming resistance → all these are facets of the same core principle: focusing on others.

When you pivot from an inward to an outward focus, you not only break through the barriers of indecision and resistance but also open doors to new possibilities.

This is actual footage of a business whose owner thought that, because they had processes defined, that their business could run without them.

They followed the advice of some gooroo they met on Twitter.

They built out all the processes.

They had every SOP documented.

But only had one capable manager.

So while the owner was on a cruise to South America, their only capable manager quit.

And the whole business came crashing down ☠️



Take away: You haven't built a business until you have redundant support and management... otherwise you risk it all crashing down.
