I am a seasoned marketing communications professional with over 15 years of experience. My background includes experience on the agency side, as a consultant, and in-house, in hospitality, travel and tourism, retail, publishing, and food and beverage. 
I spent two years on property managing marketing communications at the Royal Sonesta Boston before leaving to become a consultant on projects including Sonoma Wine Country Weekend and Nova Star Cruises, later adding management of Sonesta Hotels’ corporate social media to my roster for six years. I spent over five years managing public relations for Hampshire County Regional Tourism Council (Western Massachusetts), securing dozens of influencer and media visits throughout this time. 

Most recently I led social media efforts for Sazerac Company’s employer brand (parent to 450+ spirits brands, including Buffalo Trace, Myers’s Rum, and Fireball), fully immersing myself in the social media strategy, content creation, and community management for the award-winning global company. 

A graduate of the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, I reside in Boston with my husband, six-year-old son and two cats. I am a 7-time marathoner, and avid traveler with the next trip always in the works and with Ireland being our home-away-from-home.

Hospitality happens in the quiet moments and the little touches. Last weekend we spent a close-to-home getaway at Wentworth by the Sea Opal Collection, and as it did during past visits, its relaxed luxury had us feeling refreshed and reset. 

From the excellent early dinner service to learning bits about the property from the staff (The dome in the photo is 151 years old.) to the elegant and festive decor, moments of warmth and welcome were everywhere. We enjoyed a long and leisurely cocktail experience in the lounge during a snowstorm and spent plenty of time in the pool and outdoor hot tub. Texts throughout our stay made sure we were enjoying ourselves and had everything we needed (Though I wished they’d engaged with my social media content throughout the weekend, a missed opportunity for positioning the property as a family-friendly getaway from Boston!). 

Wentworth by the Sea is a true example of a perfect stay, and I can’t wait to return.

Celebrating its 15th year in downtown Northampton, this event is a delight for all ages, and the perfect time to explore the shops and restaurants downtown as you admire the truly incredible ice sculptures. 

Hotel Northampton is an ideal place to warm up with a drink or dinner at the end of the day; stay the night and indulge in their famous Sunday brunch buffet!

When the tiniest details create strong brand recognition 🍷 ❄️ 

In the past, I have shared my love for the Wölffer Estate Vineyard, their wines, their property, and my admiration of Joey Wolffer as a business woman, working mom, and woman who uses her voice and platform for good.  

This past Saturday as I stocked up for Snowmageddon at a local Trader Joe's, I spotted, literally from across the store, the capsule pattern on bottles of wine on display, and I immediately squealed (no, really) Wolffer!  It’s the pattern that adorns the iconic Summer in a Bottle capsules, and in this case, it’s the same pattern, different colors that tops bottles of Long Island Cab Franc, one of my absolute favorites. 

The wine is delicious, and the brand is fun, elegant, aspirational, and so consistent. Cheers!

Brand social friends with multiple locations, how is your social media structured? Is it entirely centralized in your corporate office? Do you have field marketers handling social by location, or is there a *someone* on site that got stuck with social? 

I've worked in all of the above situations, as Social Media Lead, property Social Media Manager, and as the "someone should manage this" team player. This week I have been going through old files to update things like social media training docs, and I thought I'd share a few helpful tips and lessons. 

- Develop and maintain guidelines, processes, and training that can be sent out to anyone touching social media, on any level. Clearly outline post quantity and cadence, content types to include and to avoid, photography guidance, and things like brand voice, colors, fonts, and logos. 

- Go beyond content creation guidelines to provide concrete steps and contacts for handling things like negative comments, complaints, press inquiries, and the various crisis management situations that arise via social.  There's nothing worse than throwing your SMM to the wolves without backup, leaving them scrambling to triage issues without support. 

- Share professional development and learning resources and opportunities. For many brands, their local SMM has other responsibilities and may be new to social media. Offering tips and tricks for growth shows is one way to show support. 

- Check in regularly, and offer feedback and appreciation. It's a wild world out there, and working in social media can be emotionally and mentally taxing. Your SMM is likely doing more than leadership realizes, and it's really nice to make sure their time and effort is recognized as more than just posting on Facebook.

My destination marketing communications career has encompassed blogging, PR, email marketing, event marketing, social media, influencer relations, and so much more. 

While I value and use all of that experience daily, it’s the places and people I have connected with along the way that make up such a big part of my story and the stories I have yet to tell. 

My Timehop recently reminded me of a work trip I took to Bee Cave, Texas, to experience a hotel and its hidden gem surroundings to share in various content pieces. While just outside a major tourist destination, I found Bee Cave charming on its own, especially the Bee Cave Arts Foundation Sculpture Park. Had I not been traveling for work and looking for destination highlights, I would have missed this really special little park. 

Hotel marketing, especially when your property isn’t in a major city or popular tourist destination, can be difficult. There’s plenty of noise to break through, but I always recommend finding what makes your property special. Whether it’s a great little local museum or shopping district, a beloved coffee shop nearby, or a special seating area guests adore, there’s at least one “why” guests should choose you. Find it, and share across communications channels to make sure your destination is telling its own special story.

As someone who has managed social media accounts since the very beginning, the burnout, the stress, the public abuse, the 24/7 responsibility to carry a brand, all feel very close to home. When people in other professions get to unplug, SMMs often have to double down on their time online to monitor sentiment and manage crises.
