How women are building a more inclusive creator economy

Q1 recap…

- got asked to speak on a panel for $0 for a trillion dollar company & 35 billion dollar company 

- was dropped by my talent mgmt over text

- got invited to speak on a huge podcast that was a scam (luckily I didn’t do it)

- still waiting on payments of over $30K (3 contracts) from 2023 

- have not landed new work since October 

I wish this was an April fools joke, but it is not.

This morning in NYC, we felt the shock of a 4.8 magnitude earthquake in NJ. 

My first impulse was to go on Meta, Threads to see if I actually just experienced an earthquake in NYC.

What I saw though, were Threads from brand accounts that not only made me laugh but made me want to engage with their social teams personally.  I found that each of these Threads made me giggle, as I write this with caution, from the 18th floor of a NYC building that shook for about 25 seconds. 

Do you think that brands should engage in natural phenomena such as Earthquakes, Eclipses, Hurricanes, etc? Or does it come across as unhinged and insensitive?

After sharing my daunting Q1 insights, I just have to smile at how the universe works. 

Q2 update:
🌟 3 different potential partnerships (interested in long term work relationships)

🌟 many confirmed sponsors for the first creator mental health day 

🌟 getting an advance on payments from the brands that owe me 

🌟 networking with amazing industry leaders, mentors & friends

All of this is a reminder that you usually don’t see the top of the mountain you’re climbing until you’ve reached the top. 

As hard and daunting as it can be to be a creator full time, my advice is to stay hopeful and persevere especially when times are hard.

The release of the latest report on the state of the creator economy, brought to you by the American Influencer Council – AIC, HypeAuditor, and Canopy and it features, yours truly as an expert!

Here are some key stats from the report:

🔍 Dealmaking: 54.5% of respondents prefer social media platform brand marketplaces for brand partnerships, followed by influencer marketing platforms (39.2%) and direct proposals from brands (35.1%).

💼 More Is More: Influencer marketing is just one of many tactics for marketers. Career creators are competing for paid media dollars, with livable wages depending on the frequency of deals. Many creators need two to four monthly deals for sustainable income.

💰 Payday: 32.1% of respondents prioritize instant payment terms, emphasizing the importance of consistent cash flow for career creators. Creator-first brands should prioritize flexible payment terms to support creators' financial stability.

I shared, "Relying on brand deals is a blessing and a curse. The good part is that you know you are going to get a lump sum of money at some point for a video or post that you created for a brand— hopefully, you love, use, and trust! The challenge can sometimes be that brands want to control how you're creating," which directly impacts a creator's financial wellness and mental wellness.

These insights shed light on the challenges and opportunities in the creator economy, highlighting the need for supportive policies and practices. It's an honor to be part of this groundbreaking initiative alongside amazing experts in the field including:

Creators often see a shiny headline from a major publication and want their name to be in the next article. 

So how do I land press about my work in major publications, so often?

Relationship building, pitching, time, and a little bit of luck, but mostly its about my personal brand and story.

I have spent years building my personal brand and focusing on what makes me a unique human to work with INSTEAD of chasing virality. 

By developing my own style of storytelling, both brands and journalists want to work with me because of my hot takes and thought leadership within the niches I create in. You do not need 1 Million followers or views consistently to make a name for yourself and get the recognition you deserve as a creator.  I also made myself readily available if I was approached to give my thoughts on a new study or trend happening within the industry.   

So, as you think about the press opps and brand deals you want for yourself what are you thinking about?!

I suggest starting with what sets YOU apart from the rest of the creators creating in a world where there are 207 million others to compete with!

There are HUGE phishing scams going around right now specifically, in the podcasting space…

I personally felt like trolling them for a few emails because I wanted to expose them so here is how I knew they were up to no good:

🚩 the email is from an @gmail.com email which is NOT typical for podcasts 
🚩 the font sizes & colors are different in every email 
🚩 they offered to pay me for the podcast (I’ve been on over 100 podcasts as a guest and never been paid)
🚩 they did not personalize the topic of the episode rather suggested that I would be able to choose the theme
🚩 they would not send actual links to past podcasts
🚩 they started the initial email with “hey beautiful soul” 
🚩 the emails sounded like they were generated by chat gpt
🚩 they called the podcast recording an event

Luckily I know better than to click on links and engage with this kind of scam email, however other creators have not been as lucky.

Apparently these emails claim to be the booking team the some of the largest broadcast shows and podcasts. 

Here’s how this type of scam works, they bait you through a semi-realistic email and answer “any” questions you may have while still saying vague. Then they make a time to record you on zoom logging into your profile on Facebook. Shortly after you’ll lose all admin access to your page and will not be paid. 

It happens SO often and with this scam, I’m hearing creators lose their accounts every day. 

PLEASE be vigilant and do your research before jumping on an opportunity that may be too good to be true. And update your passwords every quarter.

Most of you may not know this but I used to be a photographer, and I used to LOVE shooting photos of the stars above. 

I was entranced with the night sky and ways that I could capture the world around me in a different way than in the daylight. It brought me joy to push myself to explore the world in the daytime and figure out creative ways to shoot images at night which required a lot of specificity and care. I actually ended up writing my college admissions essay about it. 

And then, I got older and my passion for photography suddenly transitioned into work. I was only shooting images for brands or for my Instagram account. I stopped going on excursions to capture the world at night. Photography became a chore to me. 

Realizing that hurt. 

But as I gear up to watch the eclipse from Thousand Island Park, New York, today, I have caught myself smiling as I get back into my lost passion for night photography. 

I spent the entire day yesterday and this morning scouting out locations around the park looking for the best spot for a timelapse, photos of the eclipse and the surrounding landscape. 

So take it from a gal who is getting back into her lost passion and get back into it!
