One of the most difficult things I’ve encountered and I’m still learning to master, even after running a business for nearly three decades, is hiring well.

Recruitment has never been simple for me.

I genuinely like people.
I tend to see potential before I see risk.

And at times, I carry my team’s challenges more personally than a textbook leadership model would advise.

That is part of my ongoing work as a leader.

But there is one area where I am deliberately firm:

I do not tolerate a toxic work environment.

Over time, I’ve learned that toxicity is rarely loud.

It often shows up quietly, in tone, in pressure, in how feedback is delivered, and in whether people feel safe to speak.

Culture is not created by strategy decks or job titles.

It is shaped by the emotional atmosphere leaders set every day.

I actively invite my team to tell me when I’m wrong.

I do not believe leadership means being unchallenged.

And when I miss the mark, I apologize—not to diminish authority, but to model accountability.

As leaders, we must be deeply aware of this truth:

Our unregulated stress, frustration, or ego can easily become someone else’s daily burden.

When employees spend more time managing personalities than producing results, something fundamental has broken.

Work can be demanding.
It can be high-pressure.
It can require excellence.

But it should never require people to emotionally survive their leaders.

Leadership today calls for more than intelligence or ambition.

It calls for emotional maturity, the discipline to lead without exporting our internal struggles onto others.

I am still learning.
Still refining.
Still choosing growth over comfort.

But I remain clear on this:

We don’t just build businesses. 
We build environments.

And the environment we create determines whether people merely comply—or truly thrive.

So here’s the question I’ll leave us with:

Are we creating workplaces where people feel safe enough to speak up? 

Are we empowering teams to hold leadership accountable when that safety begins to erode?

Ms Kim  (Sally Kimangu) 

I was 15 years old when I saw my first computer.

I still remember the mix of awe and curiosity. 

I didn’t know the language it spoke or the power it held, but something in me understood that it represented access, possibility, and a world far bigger than the one I knew.

This journey is deeply personal.

My dad was born in a concentration camp in Lamu, at a time when freedom for Kenya was still being fought for and paid for in pain. 

My grandmother carried a bullet wound on her leg. 

Their generation fought for political freedom so that mine could dare to imagine more.

Today, as Kenya turns 62, I see Africa’s digital transformation as the continuation of that struggle just in a different form.

Technology has become our new frontier. 

It is how young people claim opportunity, how businesses create value, and how Africa shifts from being defined by what is taken from it to what is built within it.

This is not about gadgets or trends.

It is about dignity, capability, and choice.

Africa is rising not by accident but by intention. 

And every skill learned, every system built, every door opened through technology is another quiet declaration of freedom.

Is the world is ready for what Africa is becoming.

I spend some of my most precious time with marginalised communities, especially children.

And every single time, they teach me far more than I teach them.

Last Saturday, we hosted a Christmas party for children who don’t often get to slow down, dream out loud, or be asked what they want for their future.

After the food, the laughter, and the music, we did something simple.

We sat at tables. We put away phones.
And we created vision boards together.
What happened next stayed with me.

Children who are so often told what they lack started showing us what they see.

Homes. Careers. Peace. Love. Joy. Safety. Purpose.

And someone to listen.

For 72 straight hours, Truphena Muthoni held on to a tree.

Earlier this year in Nairobi, she set a formidable benchmark of 48 hours.

I’m sitting with a full heart today.

I’m deeply grateful for life, for resilience, and for the grace that carries us through different seasons.

We are living in one of the most technologically advanced moments in history, yet more people are mentally exhausted, overstimulated, and emotionally drained than ever before.

I work in digital transformation. 

I believe deeply in technology. 

I see its power every day.

But I’m also seeing something we don’t talk about enough: the quiet cost of always being connected.

Our minds rarely rest.

Our nervous systems are constantly alert.

Even in moments of silence, many of us are still scrolling, thinking, responding.

For me, walking has become non-negotiable.

I walk every day, usually 45 minutes or more, sometimes over an hour. 

Always outside, in the bush, with my dogs. 

No phone. No notifications. 

Just crickets, butterflies, squirrels movement, and space.

That walk is not exercise for me.
It is regulation.
It is healing.
It is how I come back to myself.

As we step into 2026, we need to widen the definition of digital transformation. 

Yes, we need smarter systems, better tools, and faster innovation. 

But we also need to be far more intentional about mental health, wellness, and digital boundaries.

Digital detox is not about rejecting technology.

It is about learning how to remain human while using it.

Recently, I watched a clip of Buddhist monks walking across countries for peace. It moved me.

Slowing down. Walking. 

Choosing presence in a world addicted to speed.

They are not the point.
The reminder is.
