We may do this by promoting the idea that only some emotions are allowed, pushing people to pretend they feel differently than they do. We may refuse to acknowledge how we truly feel about a situation and force positivity instead, denying people the opportunity to process difficult experiences together. 

When we do these things, we create environments where people still feel their challenging emotions, but now they are also unsupported in their capacity to communicate their true feelings, process them, and move forward purposefully.

Establishing a healthy relationship with your inner imposter means acknowledging what it's telling you without choosing to believe this message is true. 

You can even thank your imposter for doing its job (trying to protect you from embarrassment or failure): "I appreciate your concern, but this is important to me, so I'm going to do it regardless of what you say."

Agility isn't about stifling thoughts of doubt or uncertainty. It's about acknowledging doubt, fear, or any other difficult emotion, and choosing to move forward with courage.

Who do you want to be?

It's not always easy to know the answer to this question, and sometimes it takes time (and some trial and error) to figure it out. But once you do, it will be a whole lot easier to act in accordance with your values, and your life will become more purposeful and satisfying. 

Notice which activities make you feel the most alive and which often lead to disengagement. The more self-discovery you make time for, the closer you will be to creating a life that’s truly fulfilling.

The ability to be agile with our emotions doesn’t only affect us. It changes our relationships by enabling us to be more mindful in our interactions with those we care about most. When we show up to our emotions with more curiosity and compassion, we set an example for others, as well.

We can get so caught up in what others will think that we lose sight of our larger objective. The more we worry about how things could go wrong, the more we forget the possibility that things could go right.

Consider this the next time you have to be vulnerable at work. Maybe you’re about to give a presentation, learn a new skill, or even just admit that you don’t know the answer. How could you benefit from getting out of your head at this moment? What are you passionate about? Which gifts do you want to share with the world? 

Let your light shine.

Become the best partner, parent, friend, and colleague that you can be. Which behaviors and actions reflect your values? Which do not?

If you find yourself speaking over others in a meeting but you value equity and fairness, make it a goal to let others speak first next time. 

If you feel like you barely know your employees but you want to be an inclusive leader, make space in your schedule to have coffee with at least one person on your team each week. Find out who they are and what matters most to them so that you can better serve them as a leader.

Choosing to let go of behaviors that don't serve you will create space for you to invite new, values-driven actions into your life.

What are you feeling right now? 

Take a step back. Sit with it for a minute. 

Because while all of your emotions are valid, most of them do not need to be acted upon. 

Breathe into the contours of your inner landscape without racing for the exit.

How could we change our approach to wellbeing in the workplace? We could begin by sharing responsibility. Just as the health of the organization depends on the people who work there, the health and wellness of each individual also depends on the organization itself. 

Let’s be brave enough to acknowledge when systems aren’t working and need to evolve. Let’s be brave enough to support each other and ourselves on our mental health journeys.

Internal pain always comes out. 

Always. And who pays the price?

We do. Our families, our children, our communities.

Emotional skills are the cornerstone of who we are and the future we want to build. 

They should be part of every curriculum.
