Shortly after the launch, a friend called to congratulate me. After the pleasantries and kind words, he asked, “So, what’s next?”

The lean marketing movement is about going back to fundamentals—ensuring strong product-market fit and then creating a simple, high-leverage marketing infrastructure.

This infrastructure allows you to get bigger results with fewer inputs and far less complexity.

I often get asked how to win at content marketing. Usually, the person asking is looking for some quick trick or hack.

Hey, I love quick tricks and hacks more than anyone, but they're usually very short-lived. They're not a solid foundation to build your business on.

In my new book, Lean Marketing, I lay out the formula for content marketing success (chapter 13). I'll share a key part of it here...but you're not going to like it. Choose a platform, then:

1. Post every day.
2. Get a bit better each day.
3. Repeat steps 1 and 2 for two to five years.

Let me share a case in point. There are podcasters, and there are PODCASTERS. Omar Zenhom is one of the OG's of the podcasting game, with almost 2,500 episodes under his belt.

In a game where most podcasters burn out after just a few episodes, Omar Zenhom plays the loooong game. 

Given how long he's been at it and how good he has become, it would be unreasonable for him not to win at this game. As a result, his show, The $100 MBA, is one of the top podcasts in one of the most sought-after categories (business).

His way of teaching, asking questions, and adding value is second to none, but his real secret is playing the long game.

If you see content marketing as a 2-5 year + project and follow the 3-step formula above, you'll stack the deck in your favor and be positioned to win even the most competitive games like Omar has.

You’re going to hate me for saying this...

Earlier today, I was talking to an entrepreneur who runs an awesome niche service business. His service massively reduces potential downside risks in his industry.

He wanted to know what kind of marketing to do for potential prospects who are not problem-aware (i.e. people who don’t even know they have risk exposure).

Most marketers would say something like, “Run an educational campaign to highlight the potential risks in their business.”

That sounds like common sense, but it’s bad advice. It stems from the mistaken belief that marketing exists to generate customer demand. In reality, marketing is there to tap into existing demand.

My advice was to steer clear of the problem-unaware marketing segment. It’s usually a money pit.

Here’s an excerpt from my new book, Lean Marketing:

“The unaware are usually not worth marketing to. Trying to convince them they have a problem will be an uphill battle...Many inventor types live in this world and usually die poor and disillusioned.”
(Chapter 2, page 40)

You want to be a painkiller, not a vitamin. A vitamin is something optional that may provide some future benefit. A painkiller is something that can be taken to relieve pain immediately.

Most entrepreneurs haven’t reached even a tiny fraction of all the problem-aware prospects in their market. Why, then would you go down the difficult, expensive, and frustrating path of trying to convince the unaware they have a problem and then try and sell to them?

Double down on the problem-aware and sell them the painkiller they desperately need.

Not gonna lie, the list of stuff I’m good at is MUCH shorter than the list of stuff I’m bad at.

Ever watched Ocean’s 11? In case you haven’t the plot centers around the protagonist, Danny Ocean who orchestrates a plan to rob three Las Vegas casinos owned by his rival.

To execute the plan, he needs to recruit a team with very specific skill sets.

There’s Basher, the explosives guy, Livingston the tech guy, Reuben who finances the mission, Yen the acrobat who maneuvers through physical security, and so on.

Danny Ocean, played by George Clooney wouldn’t have a hope of successfully pulling off the mission himself.

In fact, when he proposes the plan, Reuben responds “You’re gonna need a crew as nuts as you are”

I love heist movies because…
a) they’re fun
and
b) they’re literally the game of business (minus the guns, car chases, and George Clooney)

If you’re anything like me, you’re good at one or two things, usually the big-picture stuff… but you suck at the execution and the details.

And that’s where many entrepreneurs get stuck because, without the execution and the details, you’re stuck in a business with slow or no growth.

The answer?

You’re gonna need a crew as nuts as you are.

You need A-players who will make your vision a reality and it all starts with marketing.

But who do you hire?
How do you make sure they’re successful in their role?
How do you set metrics and goals?
How do you keep costs down if you don't have a big budget?
Who do you hire first?
How do keep them motivated?

These are not topics I can do justice in a single post, which is why I dedicated one of the biggest chapters (chapter 11) in my new book, Lean Marketing, entirely to this topic.

Your team is your secret weapon. If you only read this chapter, you’ll have gotten massive value from it.

Someone asked me recently if I was nervous about the release of my new book, Lean Marketing (less than 24 hours away!)

Nervous and excited!

Nervous because … well, dozens of reasons. A few that crossed my mind recently:
• Is it too long? (I wanted it to be comprehensive)
• Did I overshare personal stories? (I didn’t want this to be just a dry textbook)
• Is my writing good? (There are so many awesome writers I admire)
• Is the title, subtitle, and cover compelling? (After staring at it for months, I still love it, but I know I’m biased)
• And much, much more

If you ship any creative work that’s worthwhile, it’s going to be both an internal and external battle.

Of course, I’m also very excited because entrepreneurs desperately need this right now.

We keep being told to do more, more, more.

As counterintuitive as it may seem, the best marketers on the planet have a lean marketing infrastructure. The list of stuff they do is much shorter than the list of stuff they don’t do.
