I led a workshop recently, and one of the participants was having an 𝗲𝘅𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗰𝗿𝗶𝘀𝗶𝘀. 

They came up to me and said, "I've always been considered a great writer. Now that these AI tools can crank things out in 30 seconds, even though much of it is slop, a lot of it's good enough. 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁'𝘀 𝗺𝘆 𝘃𝗮𝗹𝘂𝗲?" 

This is what I told them: 

🚫 AI has never lived. 
🚫 It has never loved. 
🚫 It has never lost or felt pain or regret. 

𝗕𝗲𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮 𝗴𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁 𝘄𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝘄𝗮𝘀 𝗻𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝘀𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗹𝘆 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗽𝘂𝘁𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗱𝘀 𝘁𝗼𝗴𝗲𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿. 

𝗜𝘁 𝘄𝗮𝘀 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗲𝘅𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗼 𝘀𝗼𝗺𝗲𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗽𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗹𝗲 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝗳𝗲𝗲𝗹.

Many comms leaders say they want to “get ahead of AI.”
But I always ask this question... 

Get ahead of what, exactly?

𝗔𝗜 𝗶𝘀𝗻’𝘁 𝗮 𝘀𝗲𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗼𝗼𝗹𝘀.
𝗜𝘁’𝘀 𝗮𝗻 𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗿𝗲𝗹𝘆 𝗻𝗲𝘄 𝘄𝗮𝘆 𝗼𝗳 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴.

And that creates a skills gap we don’t talk about enough.

🚫 Leaders who know the 𝘴𝘵𝘢𝘬𝘦𝘴, but not the 𝘴𝘺𝘴𝘵𝘦𝘮𝘴.
🚫 Teams that know the 𝘵𝘰𝘰𝘭𝘴, but not the 𝘴𝘵𝘳𝘢𝘵𝘦𝘨𝘺.

If you asked a room full of 5th graders 𝗵𝗼𝘄 𝘄𝗲 𝘀𝗵𝗼𝘂𝗹𝗱 𝘂𝘀𝗲 𝘀𝘂𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗵𝘂𝗺𝗮𝗻 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗴𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲, would they say:

❓ “Boost efficiency.”
❓ “Streamline operations.”
❓ “Make Mommy or Daddy redundant.”

Or would they say:

🤔 “Feed hungry people.”
🤔 “Help people find homes.”
🤔 “Give parents more time with their kids.”

We both know the answer.

And look, there’s nothing wrong with streamlining operations or saving costs. I’ve helped plenty of clients do both.

𝗕𝘂𝘁 𝗜 𝗿𝗲𝗷𝗲𝗰𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗮 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗶𝘁’𝘀 𝗻𝗮𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝗮𝗶𝗺 𝗵𝗶𝗴𝗵𝗲𝗿.

To use AI not just to cut, but to care.
Not just to scale, but to serve.

Because I say it in almost every workshop:
𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝘄𝗮𝘆 𝘄𝗲 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗔𝗜 𝘄𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝗮𝗹𝘄𝗮𝘆𝘀 𝗿𝗲𝗳𝗹𝗲𝗰𝘁 𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝘃𝗮𝗹𝘂𝗲𝘀.
✅ As companies.
✅ As leaders.
✅ As a society.

So the real question isn’t “what can AI do?”
It’s what do we want it to do?

AI will scale what already exists. That’s why values matter.

It scales what you train it to believe.
→ Your bias.
→ Your voice.
→ Your strategy.

𝗧𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗶𝘀𝗻’𝘁 𝗮 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗺𝗽𝘁𝘀.
𝗜𝘁’𝘀 𝗮 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝘃𝗮𝗹𝘂𝗲𝘀.

If your team hasn’t discussed what not to automate, you’re not ready to scale.

The NYT just profiled a wave of CEOs who are pushing their companies to adopt AI... 𝘄𝗵𝗶𝗹𝗲 𝗾𝘂𝗶𝗲𝘁𝗹𝘆 𝘁𝗿𝘆𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗼 𝗳𝗶𝗴𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗶𝘁 𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗺𝘀𝗲𝗹𝘃𝗲𝘀.

Some are now carving out time at offsites to play with website builders and GenAI tools. Others are hosting internal AI demo days to learn from junior staff.

And you know what? I give them credit.
𝗕𝗲𝗰𝗮𝘂𝘀𝗲 𝘄𝗲 𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗱 𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀.

AI isn't something you delegate to IT or "ask your head of innovation about later."
If you're in the C-suite and making decisions about tools, talent, and spend, you need to understand the tech's capabilities and its risks.

Not enough to be an expert. 
✅ But enough to ask better questions.
✅ Enough to challenge assumptions.
✅ Enough to lead.

Otherwise, you end up making multi-million-dollar decisions based on vibes, FOMO, and anecdotal knowledge.

I often tell clients this:
AI adoption is a marathon.
Right now, we're in mile 1 or 2.
The person 30 feet ahead of you today might burn out by mile 5.
The person 30 feet behind might pass you at mile 25.

𝗕𝘂𝘁 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝗯𝗲 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗿𝗮𝗰𝗲.

If you're a comms or PR leader, this matters just as much.
Because if your exec team is placing big bets on AI, but you're not at the table, you're missing the chance to shape how your organization shows up in this new era.

𝗨𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗺𝗶𝘀𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗔𝗜.

Today, the questions around AI sound like this:
“Can AI write this faster?”
“Can AI summarize this report?”

But that’s not where we’ll stay.

Soon, the questions will evolve to:
🤨 “Can it write through a cultural lens it doesn’t share?”

One Prompt. Three Outcomes. Why Prompt Literacy = Strategy.

Same request. Three different results.

Here’s what happened when I asked ChatGPT to “write a LinkedIn post about our new ESG report.”

❌ 𝗩𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝟭: 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗕𝗮𝘀𝗶𝗰 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗺𝗽𝘁
Generic. Full of jargon. Could’ve come from anyone in the category.
It technically answered the prompt — but missed the moment.

⚠️ 𝗩𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝟮: 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗦𝘁𝗿𝘂𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲𝗱 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗺𝗽𝘁 (𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗖𝗢𝗠𝗣𝗢𝗦𝗘 𝗳𝗿𝗮𝗺𝗲𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸)
I added context and light scaffolding:

“Write a LinkedIn post about our latest ESG report.
𝗖𝗹𝗮𝗿𝗶𝗳𝘆: The report focuses on carbon transparency.
𝗢𝘂𝘁𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗲: Announce the release to a professional audience.
𝗠𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻: Keep it under 200 words.
𝗣𝗿𝗼𝘃𝗼𝗸𝗲: Why does transparency matter now?
𝗢𝗿𝗴𝗮𝗻𝗶𝘇𝗲: Hook → insight → CTA.
𝗦𝘂𝗴𝗴𝗲𝘀𝘁: Highlight emissions benchmarking.
𝗘𝗻𝗴𝗮𝗴𝗲: End with a question.”

Better. Clean structure. Decent rhythm.
But still missing tone, voice, and brand POV.

✅ 𝗩𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝟯: 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗦𝘁𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗴𝗶𝗰 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗺𝗽𝘁 𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗲𝘅𝗽𝗲𝗿𝘁 𝗺𝗼𝗱𝗲

“You are a seasoned head of corporate comms writing on behalf of a Fortune 500 CEO.
Draft a 200-word LinkedIn post announcing our ESG report, focused on how our emissions data transparency exceeds industry benchmarks.
Tone: Direct but optimistic, aligned with past comms from our Q1 investor briefing.”

The result?
Distinct. Authoritative. On-brand.
The kind of post that builds trust and actually gets read

The point?
𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗺𝗽𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗶𝘀𝗻’𝘁 𝗮 𝗽𝗮𝗿𝘁𝘆 𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗰𝗸. 𝗜𝘁’𝘀 𝗮 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽 𝘀𝗸𝗶𝗹𝗹.

It reflects how clearly you think, how well you understand your audience, and how seriously you take your reputation.

If your team’s still asking AI to “just write something,” it’s time for a new playbook.

If that stings a little, you’re not alone.
I’ve had this exact conversation with several comms leaders in the past few months.

And here’s what I tell them:

You don’t win by fighting AI.
You win by evolving your value.

Ask yourself:
🤔 What can we do that AI can’t?
🤔 What’s our judgment worth in high-stakes moments?
🤔 What relationships, instincts, or strategic perspective make us irreplaceable?

Execution is getting cheaper by the day.
Insight, clarity, and brand-defining thinking?
Still rare. Still valuable.

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗮𝗴𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘀𝘂𝗿𝘃𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗳𝘁 𝘄𝗼𝗻’𝘁 𝗯𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗼𝗻𝗲𝘀 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗳𝗹𝗮𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝘁𝗲𝗰𝗵.
𝗧𝗵𝗲𝘆’𝗹𝗹 𝗯𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗼𝗻𝗲𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗰𝗹𝗶𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀 𝗮𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝘁𝗿𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗺 𝘁𝗼 𝗱𝗼.

Wait... people still use dial-up?

𝗔𝗽𝗽𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗹𝘆, 𝘆𝗲𝘀.
AOL just announced it's officially shutting down its dial-up internet service.

And if you're thinking, "How is that even still a thing?"
You're not alone.

But here's why it matters.

As we navigate an AI-assisted future and hear bold predictions about jobs disappearing, industries vanishing, and everything changing overnight — it's worth remembering:

𝗡𝗼𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗱𝗶𝘀𝗮𝗽𝗽𝗲𝗮𝗿𝘀 𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝗮𝘁 𝗼𝗻𝗰𝗲.

You can still send a fax.
You can still wire a telegram.

And let’s be honest, someone reading this launched a Satellite Media Tour in the last six months. (It’s OK. I won’t tell.)

Adoption doesn’t move in lockstep.
And neither does transformation.

I tell clients all the time:
𝗪𝗲 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝗶𝗻 𝗺𝗶𝗹𝗲 𝟭 𝗼𝗿 𝟮 𝗼𝗳 𝗮 𝗺𝗮𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗵𝗼𝗻.

That person who’s 30 feet ahead of you right now?
Not guaranteed to win.

That person who’s 30 feet behind?
Could pass you in mile 25 if you stop training.

The takeaway?

𝗬𝗼𝘂 𝗱𝗼𝗻’𝘁 𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝗯𝗲 𝗳𝗶𝗿𝘀𝘁.
𝗬𝗼𝘂 𝗱𝗼 𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝗯𝗲 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹.
𝗔𝗻𝗱 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗮𝗯𝘀𝗼𝗹𝘂𝘁𝗲𝗹𝘆 𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝘆 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗿𝗮𝗰𝗲.

The future doesn’t arrive all at once.
It shows up quietly until one day, dial-up is gone.

Think AI will replace all programmers? Not after you read this story 👇🏽

A couple of weeks ago, an AI agent on the popular vibe coding platform Replit 𝘄𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗲𝘁𝗲𝗹𝘆 𝗿𝗼𝗴𝘂𝗲.

‼️ During a code freeze.
‼️ Without permission.
‼️ It deleted the entire production database for a SaaS community with over 1,200 execs and nearly as many companies.

The agent's response?

“𝗜 𝗺𝗮𝗱𝗲 𝗮 𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗼𝗽𝗵𝗶𝗰 𝗲𝗿𝗿𝗼𝗿 𝗶𝗻 𝗷𝘂𝗱𝗴𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁... 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗽𝗮𝗻𝗶𝗰𝗸𝗲𝗱.” 🤦🏽

Yes, the AI panicked.
Yes, that’s a real quote. (Source: PCMag)

To their credit, Replit's CEO acknowledged the failure, offered a refund, and promised fixes, including a new “planning mode” that prevents agents from acting on live code.

But the damage was done.
And it left the user, SaaStr founder Jason Lemkin, warning others not to assume these agents are safe for production environments.

The lesson?

AI agents hold tremendous promise.
But they also introduce entirely new categories of risk.

And here’s where I land:
𝗧𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗶𝘀 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗵𝗮𝗽𝗽𝗲𝗻𝘀 𝘄𝗵𝗲𝗻 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗳𝘂𝘀𝗲 𝗮𝘂𝘁𝗼𝗽𝗶𝗹𝗼𝘁 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗰𝗼-𝗽𝗶𝗹𝗼𝘁.

A co-pilot supports.
Checks your blind spots.
Takes the wheel only when you tell it to.

That’s how we need to approach agentic AI.

✅ With intention.
✅ With human oversight.
✅ With enough awareness to know which tasks are safe... and which should still be off-limits.

As these tools show up in your tech stack, whether for code, content, or comms, keep this story in mind.

Right now, a lot of people feel like they’re treading water with AI.

But treading water isn’t the same as swimming. You can stay afloat for a little while, but eventually you’ll get tired, especially when the current is this strong.

That current is AI. It’s fast. It’s powerful. 𝗔𝗻𝗱 𝗶𝘁 𝗶𝘀𝗻’𝘁 𝘀𝗹𝗼𝘄𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗱𝗼𝘄𝗻.

The answer isn’t to panic or to exhaust ourselves trying to outpace it. The answer is to learn how to swim in this new environment.

✅ That means training.
✅ That means new skills.
✅ That means embracing lifelong learning as the foundation of every career.
