Have you ever been hit with hopelessness?

Me too. (but these 5 things always help me)

Waves of hopelessness feast upon entrepreneurs like rats devour cheese. 

↳ Sometimes, we know exactly why we feel it
↳ Other times it comes on like bad weather
↳ But it's always tied to your self-worth

Like everything, hopelessness and the dings on self-worth have levels. 

↳ I've had days of being tired, unmotivated, and uninspired 
↳ I've had weeks of uninterrupted anxiety and insomnia 
↳ I've had months of what feels like endless despair 

It's those months that really suck.  

↳ Those times often come on the heels of a massive failure. 
↳ An implosion that caused a total reset of everything. 
↳ And my self-worth is in the toilet. Deep in there.  
  
Your bad luck, missteps, mistakes, failures or complete implosions do not change your worth.

Here's my go-to framework for seeing the truth of my worth again: 

1. Self Talk → It starts with internal dialogue. No more beating up on myself. I try to talk to myself the way I'd talk to a child. 

2. Moving → Do anything. Outside if I can. Several times a day. It sounds trite, but motion creates emotion. It's like a magic trick. 

3. Get Social → Yup, the opposite of what I feel like doing: being around others when I feel low. But man, does it help. We need it.

4. Be of Service → The surefire way to feel your inherent value is to give some of it to someone else.  

5. Flip the Script → Whatever happened did not change who you are. What if whatever you've been through actually increased, not decreased, your value? Guess what? That's the truth. You know it deep inside. Write it down.  

Here's the real truth:

We all face setbacks. We all stumble. But your bumps and bruises do not decrease your worth.

Every entrepreneur knows this truth:

Winning feels amazing. But growth only comes from losing, right? 

→ Loss teaches resilience.
→ But winning shows what works.

Entrepreneurs just often forget to "harvest" the wisdom of a win. 

1. Identify what worked well and why
2. See what ad-hoc factors can be turned into a system 
3. Gather the team together for a debrief to share every insight
4. Get as many perspectives as possible - especially from customers 
5. Memorialize the win in a case study, training material, or new brand position 

Entrepreneurship is a journey filled with highs and lows. Embrace both. If you're leaning, you're winning.

Dear LinkedIn friend, I have a confession.

I often wondered if I'd make enough to survive. 

I worked in retail for minimum wage. 
I did low-skill construction work. 
I worked security at events. 
I unloaded UPS trucks.

All of these sucked, but school just wasn't for me, so that's what I had to do.

Since then, I was a stripper (yes, just like Magic Mike)
A personal trainer and nutrition coach. 
A nutritional supplement sales rep. 

These were all a lot more fun and pay, but still felt "temporary." 

I worked in an investment bank. (nope, not for me)
Started working in tech and factory automation. 
Got into robotics and managed big teams.

Now I had something I was interested in, and I could even support a family. 

But I started and sold an odd food and beverage company. 
Started and grew a software design & dev agency. 
Continue to spin up new software products.

I have no idea what I'll do five years from now, and not knowing is just fine. Because the not knowing is what makes life interesting. You may not: 

Know how to take the first steps toward building something yourself.
Know how to find others that want to work on your idea. 
Know how to build the product you want to launch.

And that's okay, too. All you have to do is keep moving, one experience at a time. 

You can drive in the dark of night from The Grand Canyon in AZ → Mt. Rushmore in SD. Your headlights will only show you the next 200 feet of road on that 1,000-mile journey. 

But guess what? It works. You'll still get there 200 feet at a time. 📍

P.S. What's the strangest job you ever had? I bet you can guess mine. 

There's a voice guiding you that doesn't need words.

Because they don't exist (here are 10) 

Founders are always told to listen to their gut, but

→ It may not be logical 
→ It may go against your plan
→ You may not have the words for it

The truth? 

The best decisions often don't come with a list of 'whys.'

They just are. 

Here are ten concepts that we do not have English words for. Imagine how many more (especially in business) exist. 

1) The space between raindrops 
2) The idea that is “all is as it should be.”
3) That happy, tired feeling after a big meal 
4) People who are funny, without being mean
5) A person or thing that also feels like "home" 
6) That feeling of peace just prior to falling asleep
7) That feeling of your skin against someone else's 
8) Being stuck but not knowing what the alternative is
9) People who are deep but without ever being negative 
10) The ways we define periods of our life beyond work or age 

P.S. Have you ever made a decision based on something you didn't have words for? 

Multitasking could be slowing you down -or even causing harm.

But it's not all created equally. Here's why.

Combining tasks is like mixing foods. Chocolate + peanut butter? Rad. 
Peanut butter + tuna fish? Not so much. 

Bouncing between Slack, Zoom, Figma, WhatsApp, and Gmail is less Reese's and more Peanut-Fish. 

Causes errors
Impairs memory
Hurts creative focus
Contributes to burnout
Increases mental fatigue
Increases levels of stress 
Lowers your quality of work
Creates loss of prioritizing skills
Destroys quality of communication
Decreases ability to learn new things
Your brain cannot properly encode memories
The completely ironic result of less productivity 

But some multi-tasking is pure magic. 

Audio learning and doing a repetitive task 
Breaking bread with anyone you love 
Reading along with an audiobook
Walking and having a meeting 
Errands with your kids 
(not all errands)

Remember, being busy isn't always being productive. Choose your combos wisely. 🧠

P.S Have you ever noticed multitasking doing more harm than the good you had in mind? 


For 10 years, I've been loving my digital journal.

Here's why I'm taking a break from it. 

Journaling is valuable. But everybody knows that, or at least you'd assume that from how many LinkedIn posts there are about it. 

I've been using Day One for a decade, and I love it. I can: 

→ Sync it across multiple devices
→ Type much, much faster than I write
→ Have useful features like search and tagging

So why would I go back to paper? 

1. It's not a screen
↳ I'll spend upwards of 12 hours a day on screens. Paper is a welcome break for my eyes and soul. 

2. No distractions 
↳ Having my journal on my desktop, phone, and computer is very convenient - until that Slack notification comes in. 

3. Improved Comprehension 
↳ The act of writing involves deeper cognitive processing, making it more likely to stick

4. Promotes Slow Thinking 
↳ Because it's slower than typing, the pace can lead to more nuanced ideas. 

5. Physio-emotional Connection 
↳ The tactile experience of writing on paper actual leads to a deeper emotional connection to the material - which is ideal for journaling. 

So what do I write? It's super basic and I believe Sahil Bloom does something very similar. I call it ABC123:

A. One thing I am grateful for today
B. Something that is troubling me
C. A win that chalked up 
↳ Then, 3 things I am committing to get done the following day. 

That's it. I'm usually done around 10 minutes. 

P.S. I'm trying to get out of the habit of doing things purely for the sake of efficiency. E.g. it's faster to type, so I'll journal like that instead. What are things you could benefit from by going slower?

Here are 3 questions to prevent bleeding:

...aaand survey says: MEETINGS. 

That's right. Poorly run or useless meetings in the US cost businesses $399 billion a year. 🤯

As a founder, it's easy to get sucked into what all the 'big guys' do. Don't fall for having meetings for the sake of having meetings. You'll bleed cash and waste hours of your life. 

Here are three questions I ask of every meeting I see on the calendar (with a few follow-ups): 

1. Does this meeting really need to happen? (For anybody)
→ Can this be handled in a Slack thread instead? 
→ An email? 
→ Have we tried that already? 
  ↳ If so, why didn’t that work?

2. What is the desired outcome of this meeting? 
→ Is the person requesting it trying to get approval for something? 
→ Did something go wrong? 
→ Is there information they cannot find anywhere? 
  ↳ Provide a crystal clear desired outcome (and agenda if need be) before starting. 

3. Is it absolutely necessary for me to attend?  
→ Could somebody just send me a recap? 
  ↳ How about an AI summary? 

P.S. The even bigger cost? The wasted hours of your life. Those are priceless.

Cycling and golf have one big thing in common. 

(and they both share this trait with entrepreneurship) 

If you want to be good at any of them, 
You'll need to commit a lot of time. 

There's simply no way around it. 

A strong aerobic base requires millions of pedal revolutions. 
A respectable golfer needs many thousands of swings.
And a successful entrepreneur must commit. 

You can dabble in any of these and have lots of fun. 

A side hustle is totally doable with a full-time job. 
Weekend family rides are one of my favorite things. 
I have lots of friends who love golf but aren't very good. 

But if you want to play the game of excelling, you have to put in the time. 

And if you're the type to get obsessed...

We'd likely be friends, but - 
Get ready for the haters to surface
Your spouse is not likely to understand

P.S. I've still never played golf, but I get the obsession. And I need to save an obsession for that time in my life when I've broken too many bones to keep riding. 

Most entrepreneurs are obsessed with metrics.

(and most fail to note this most important one)

In the chase for growth, funding, exits, and accolades, many people forget why they are doing it all to being with. 

But how do we measure a "good life," and what does that even mean? 

Many go straight to: 

→ Wealth
→ Recognition
→ Accomplishments

Sure. Chase all the shiny stuff. Why not? But is that what makes a good life? 

I once heard a good life described as any experience that lacks nothing. (and in reality, this is the majority of our lives). 

Perfect moments are everywhere. Even in your business. The messy, hilarious, and sometimes tough moments.

All the things that happen in between the stuff that we think "matters." 

→ The sunrise
→ A warm shower
→ A good cup of coffee

(three little perfect moments before 8am!)

There's an Eckhardt Tolle story that really hits for me: 

A beggar is sitting at the side of a street holding out an old baseball cap in hopes of receiving change. 

A stranger walks by and replies to his begging with, ‘I have nothing to give you’ and then asks him what is inside the box the beggar is sitting on.

The beggar looks inside the box that he has been sitting on for as long as he can remember and discovers to his amazement, a treasure of gold.

→ All these simple moments are that stranger and the good life is the treasure you're sitting on.

↳ Think Notion, on steroids. All the document management stuff, native time tracking, detailed team permissions, and unlimited file storage. You can legit manage a complex project with ClickUp - even down to issue management and ticket creation. 

2. Proposify
↳ Remember the days when proposals were created on .doc files? I do. This platform takes a modular approach to put proposals together like Lego bricks. It even has video embedding an analytics to view prospect view times per page. 

3. Copper CRM
↳ It is not as pricey as HubSpot or SalesForce, but it is more of a CRM and less of a manage-all-your-marketing kind of tool. It does have great Gmail integration and email sequence builders.  

4. Loom
↳ Loom lets you make and share videos really easily, so you can show your screen and talk at the same time, and then share out the link of the recording. I use it every day for our SOP and my VA.  

5. OpenAI
↳ There are so many narrow-purpose AI tools out there that it makes my head spin. So we make our own with custom GPTs, and share them out with a team account. Oh, and that solves those pesky token limits. 

6. Marker.io
↳ And issue management tool that lets you easily tell developers about website problems by letting you draw and write on the website like it's a picture. It's awesome because you don't have to be tech-savvy (many of our clients) to help fix website mistakes.

7. Riverside.fm
↳ Simple tool to record podcasts and videos because it makes you look and sound super clear, even if your internet is not the best. Ton's 'o features like AI gen'd clips, transcription editing, a producer portal, and even a teleprompter. 

8. BuiltWith 
↳ A Chrome extension that pulls the curtain back on whatever site or app you visit, revealing details about the tech stack, ad widgets, hosting, and anything else you desire to know. 

9. Momentum 
↳ A Chrome extension that changes your new tab page into a beautiful scene with a clock, to-do list, and greeting. I recently went to the paid version because the integrated Pomodoro timer is the best I've used. Open a new tab? It reminds you to keep on task. 

10. Readwise 
↳ A Chrome extension and web app that let's you save things from around the web - AND your Kindle library. It then gives you a weekly digest of all the things you've saved.  

11. Meco 
↳ An email inbox made for newsletters. Ever noticed how crappy it is to read newsletters in your Gmail or Office inbox? Meco is designed to display them perfectly and organize them all in one place.

My answer: I'd start getting prepared with the first principles of entrepreneurship. 

But I'm not talking about theory and textbooks. I'm talking about action. Because in the startup game, this is the way. 

Here are 5 actions I would start with: 

1. Get A Strong Network Trifecta Jumpstarted 
↳ Industry contacts (LinkedIn is great)
↳ Mentors - from your network
↳ Peers (even competitors)

2. Understand Cashflow and the Money Part of What You Want to Start
↳ Find some good examples from a similar business
↳ Build a 1-year theoretical one for your venture
↳ Get a feel for what Defaul Alive looks like

3. Strengthen Your Resolve by Building Resilience (before you need it)
↳ Each day, do 1 intentionally uncomfortable thing 
↳ Establish a workout routine as a priority 
↳ Start removing time sucks asap

4. Get a Starting Point for Your Brand Identity  from Day 1
↳ Don't let perfect get in the way of getting started

5. Set a Long Goal for Your Vision, but Keep Tactics Compressed

Invest in yourself. Entrepreneurs are going to war. A glorious and enthralling battle. Don't expect to win if you show up with a spade and watering can.

Working hard is required. But it's not enough.

Here are 5 ways I use leverage:

I once heard Robert Kiyosaki use this to define a real business: 

↳ Leave your business for 2 months or more 
↳ Come back to find the business doing as well, if not better than before you left. 

Leverage is the only way to perform this kind of magic. 
It's a tool that allows more output with less effort. 
AKA - doing more with less. 

Product → The best ones have a minimal cost to replicate (it's why I love software)
Capital → Using money to multiply outcomes like investments or real estate
Labor → Utilizing other peoples' time and energy for your projects 
Systems → Document what works and make it repeatable 
Automation → Like labor, but fewer headaches

I've used all 5 of these in entrepreneurship. 
I've stepped away for weeks and even for months. 

But software products are one of the most effective uses of leverage in business. 

Nonlinear Outcomes → Revenue can be generated disproportionate to operating costs
Distribution → Millions can use it without a significant increase in cost 
Permissions → Unlike labor, discretion to scale is up to the creator 
Access → Democratization means the barrier to entry is low
