Love my little sister. 

I was 11. She was 3.

We loved living in rural Ohio. Snapping a photo from our backyard as kids. 

45 minutes from any major city. No city lights. Cornfields everywhere. Driving an hour away was a big day out. Never got on a plane until age 14.

Never saw the ocean as a kid. Barely travelled out of state. (size of Tasmania) Didn't figure we'd ever go overseas. Couldn't afford a passport. 

Neither of us expected to go far. 


Fast forward a few decades. 


We did get out of Ohio. And travelled the world. Lived poor. Drank champagne. Highs and lows. Spent years in the developing world. Ran through ghettos. Lived in ghettos. Made friends from all cultures and languages. 

Was robbed twice in New York, once at gunpoint.

Harassed in Central America by police. Nearly jailed. 

Then I married an Aussie girl. My sister came to the wedding. She met an Aussie boy. Happily ever after..

Audits got pricier. Brains got quieter. (sad true story)



Nancy runs operations like a military campaign. Calm voice. Sharp spreadsheets. Zero patience for fluff.

Every year her ISO audits cost more. Every year they delivered less.

It was like ordering a large pizza. Getting a medium. And being charged for gluten free.

Audit day arrived. Auditor opens laptop. Types loudly. Nods thoughtfully. Highlights a typo in a procedure. Misses a gaping operational inefficiency the size of Brisbane.

“Clause 7.5. Document control.”

Meanwhile, three departments are reinventing the same process weekly. But yes. Let’s fix the footer font. The invoice climbed 15 percent. Audit duration quietly shrank.
Insights? On a diet.

Nancy did what great Ops Managers do. She pulled the numbers. Prep time internally up 30 percent. Audit days down. Findings down. Strategic insights nearly extinct.

That’s not maturity.

So she changed it. Integrated management system. Aligned scope properly. Combined audits. Set clear expectations.

Next cycle. Fewer days on site. Less duplication. Better conversations. Actual benchmarking.

Supervisors stopped hiding folders like it was a tax raid.

They started asking questions.Because when audits feel like free consulting, people lean in.

When audits feel like a compliance dentist, people avoid eye contact.

Compliance should build muscle.
Not just maintain paperwork cardio.

Splash-A-Bout Swim Schools in Rockhampton wanted to go to the next level.

They needed:
More systemised processes for growth
Procedures (standardised) used throughout 7 sites

Proof, they were doing it. (got ISO)

PS - Did they knock the interview out or what?

Audits should create rhythm, not chaos.

But some certifiers treat calendars like jazz.
(sad, but true) 




Brad runs an electrical contracting business in Melbourne.

Good crew.
Solid projects.
Wins decent tenders.

He signed up for certification thinking it meant one audit a year.

Predictable.
Planned.
Budgeted.

Instead, his certifier keeps “bringing it forward.”

Every time.

One year it’s 10 months.
Next cycle 8 months.
Then 9.

On average. About every 9 months.

Which means in 3 years, Brad’s basically paid for 4 audits.

That’s not compliance.
That’s calendar gymnastics.

Now here’s the thing.

ISO standards like ISO 9001, ISO 45001, ISO 14001; they require surveillance audits annually.

Annually.

Not “whenever we can squeeze you in before EOFY.”

Not “our auditor is in town so let’s make it work.”

The audit cycle is supposed to support the business rhythm.

Electrical contractors already juggle:

• Project deadlines
• Subcontractors
• Safety obligations
• Cash flow
• And clients who think “urgent” is a personality trait

Throw in a surprise audit shift and watch stress levels spike.

Brad told me, “I feel like I’m always preparing.”

That’s the hidden cost.

Not the invoice.

The disruption.

The team scrambling for evidence.
The ops manager cancelling site visits.
The admin chasing documents.

All because someone else can’t manage a calendar.

Here’s what most businesses don’t realise.

Your certification cycle is defined.

There’s an initial certification audit.
Then annual surveillance audits.
Then a recertification audit in year three.

It’s structured.

It’s predictable.

And it should align to your original certification anniversary date.

If audits are drifting earlier each year, ask why.

Sometimes it’s innocent scheduling.
Sometimes it’s capacity planning.
Sometimes it’s just poor system control.

Which is ironic.
Given we’re talking about management systems.

Compliance should build confidence.

Not feel like an electrical fault waiting to trip the board.

So what can Brad do?  And what can you do?

1. Check your certification cycle letter. Confirm your original anniversary date.


2. Ask your certifier to lock future audits within the correct 12 month window.


3. If the pattern continues. Consider whether your certification partner values your planning as much as their own.



A good certifier respects your operational cadence.

Especially in trades where downtime costs real money.

ISO should feel like scaffolding.

Supporting the structure.

Not someone randomly moving the ladder while you’re on it.

If your audits are creeping forward each year, it’s worth reviewing the pattern.

Because compliance done well creates stability.

Done poorly. It just creates invoices.

And Brad has enough sparks flying onsite already.

But Megan thought they were.



Megan is the HSEQ Manager at a mid-sized construction company.

Hard hat. High standards. 
Spreadsheet skills that could scare accountants.

But audits?  Audits were… different.

Every year the same ritual arrived. Calendar invite. Auditor arrives. Laptop opens.

Click. Tick. Flick.

You could almost hear the keyboard whisper: 
“Clause 4.2… yes.”
“Clause 5.1… looks fine.”
“Clause 7.3… impressive table formatting.”

Meanwhile Megan watched something magical happen. 
Important risks? Invisible.
Operational issues? Apparently shy.
Process inefficiencies? Hiding behind a filing cabinet.

But the typo in Procedure 8.4.2?

Oh yes. That got its own paragraph in the report. It felt less like a business audit.  More like someone proofreading a novel nobody planned to publish.

Megan once joked:
“If auditors were building inspectors, they'd measure the paint thickness and miss the missing wall.”

No one laughed. 
Well… except the site supervisor. But he laughed at everything.

The truth is this. Audits slowly drifted from their original purpose. They were designed to help businesses improve. To uncover risks before they become headlines. To spot inefficiencies before they become expensive habits.

Instead, some audits became what we'll call:
Tick-and-Flick Theatre.

Looks official. Sounds technical. Delivers about as much value as a motivational poster in the lunchroom.

But here’s the twist Megan discovered.

It’s not the standard’s fault. ISO standards are actually built to drive improvement.

They ask questions like:
• What risks threaten the business?
• What processes break down under pressure?
• What keeps management awake at night?

Good auditors dig into those questions. Great auditors hunt for insight.

The kind that makes a management team pause and say:
“Wait… we should fix that.”

When Megan finally experienced that kind of audit, she said something interesting. 
“For the first time, it felt like someone was auditing the business… not the paperwork.”

That’s the moment ISO systems start delivering real value. Not as a compliance exercise. But as a business improvement engine.

Audits stop being dreaded.

Straightforward systems. Straightforward people. Straightforward work.

But the audits kept getting… strange. 
Every year the price went up. Every year the company got smaller. At one point they had 30–40 people.

Now they have three or four.

But the audit price? Higher than ever.
Yasmin did the maths. The auditor was onsite about three hours. A few hours travel.  Some report writing.

The effective hourly rate?
Somewhere between inner-city lawyer and rocket launch consultant.

“If our company shrinks… shouldn’t the audit shrink too?”

Fair question. ISO audits are supposed to scale with a business. More people.
More complexity. More time.

ISO was designed to make businesses better. Not just busier.

And definitely not poorer.
