When Everything Changes, Here’s How to Be the Anchor

First line managers are crucial in bringing strategic goals to life.

They stand at the crossroads where high-level strategies turn into daily actions and play a pivotal role in interpreting and communicating the company's vision to their teams.

This ensures that every team member understands not just the 'what' but the 'why' behind the strategic decisions.

A key part of their role is to provide feedback from the ground up.

Insights from frontline experiences can help refine strategies, making them more realistic and achievable.

They're also responsible for keeping the team motivated and focused, overcoming day-to-day challenges while steering towards long-term objectives.

Effective first line managers act as the glue holding strategy and execution together.

They translate broad goals into specific, actionable plans that their teams can work on.

This means breaking down complex strategies into understandable tasks, monitoring progress, and adjusting where needed.

When your motivation comes from outside rewards (a bonus, a title, or even just social media likes), you’re essentially letting others pull your strings. 

Every decision you make is influenced by what you think will get you that next pat on the back. 

You’re dancing to a tune someone else is playing.

I’ve been there and after chasing the carrot and finally getting it, I found out I don’t actually like carrots.

Now flip the script from extrinsic to intrinsic motivation. 

This is about doing things because they resonate with you, because they light a fire inside, not because of any reward dangling in front of you. 

It’s the difference between working on a project because it speaks to your passion or interests, and doing the same work just because that’s what you’re supposed to do.

When your motivation is intrinsic, you’re in control. You choose your path based on what’s important to you, not because of external factors. 

This shift doesn’t just change how you work—it changes how you live. 

You start making choices that align with your values and what you find truly rewarding. 

That’s when you steer your own life, rather than being steered by the promise of rewards.

When the rewards stop coming, your passion is what keeps you moving.

Do you like carrots?

❌ Hiring isn't just about ticking boxes for skills and experience. While these are important, I find myself drawn to qualities that aren't always listed on a CV.

Here's what really stands out to me: Grit, adaptability, a growth mindset, curiosity, emotional intelligence, passion, and coachability. 

These traits tell a deeper story about a candidate, one that goes beyond what they've done to highlight their potential for growth and impact.

➥ Grit is about resilience. It's the perseverance to keep pushing forward, even when things get tough. Team members with grit don't see obstacles as dead ends but keep the focus on reaching the finish line, even under the toughest conditions.

➥ Adaptability means flexibility. It’s crucial today where change is the only constant. An adaptable team member can pivot strategies, embrace new ideas, and thrive in changing environments without losing momentum.

➥ A Growth Mindset is the belief in continual improvement. It’s about understanding that abilities can be developed through dedication and hard work. People with a growth mindset are invaluable because they constantly seek to improve themselves, their work, and by extension, the organization.

➥ Curiosity is the engine of innovation. Curious individuals always ask, "Why?" and "What if?". This relentless questioning leads to new ideas, pushing the boundaries of what’s possible, and driving innovation and diversity of thought forward.

➥ Emotional Intelligence ensures strong team dynamics. It’s the ability to understand and manage one’s own emotions, as well as empathize with others. This fosters a collaborative and supportive work environment, making complex team projects smoother and more efficient.

➥ Passion is the fuel behind persistence. When someone is passionate about their work, they’re more likely to stay motivated, work better, and remain committed through thick and thin. Passionate team members often inspire those around them, raising the bar for everyone.

➥ Coachability signifies openness to learning and evolving. A coachable person takes feedback constructively and sees every experience as an opportunity to grow. This openness not only accelerates individual development but also contributes to a culture of continuous improvement.

These are the markers of individuals who don't just meet challenges but thrive on them, who are eager to learn and grow, and who contribute positively to the team culture.
