35 YEARS. ONE TEST. EVERYTHING CHANGED.
12 August 2025 - an email pops into my inbox. 

After 35 years of “living” with a diagnosis that 
shaped everything I thought I was…
 
My results came back negative.

When I was 9, I was diagnosed with 
Juvenile Rheumatoid Arthritis.

I was told I’d need plastic knees.
That I’d never be an athlete.
For a while, I couldn’t even walk, literally.

My mom drove daily from Queenstown to 
East London after work to visit me.

It was hard for us all.

That belief followed me for decades - quietly 
steering every decision.

It became the invisible ceiling that said, 
“Don’t push too far.”

And for 35 years, I believed it.

Then, earlier this year, my financial advisor, 
Wayne Martens (absolute legend), said:

“Paul, I reckon you were misdiagnosed.”
I laughed it off at first.

Then I got tested.
Full blood work. Full assessment. Alles.
 
Negative. Every. Single. One.

35 years of believing I was broken - 
gone in a moment.

The weight I’d been carrying for most of my life...

Lifted.

It’s hard to explain what that moment does to you - when the story that’s defined you your whole life suddenly loses its power.

That’s why I’m doing Ironman Vichy 2026.

Not to tick a bucket list.

To reclaim the time fear stole.
To prove that I can do hard things - and 
to show my girls what’s possible when you 
decide your story isn’t over.

And I’ve got the best people in my corner - 
Flip van der Merwe and Stephan Weyers.

And a few other legends I can't wait to meet.

They’ve shown me that growth doesn’t care 
about age - only belief.

But here’s the deeper truth…

This story isn’t just personal - it’s professional too.

Because every day, I work with founders and executives 
who are carrying their own version of that diagnosis.

Stories like:
“I don't have clarity”
“I don't have the dam time”
“I’m just not built for LinkedIn”

And every time I hear that, I see it for what it is - 

A misdiagnosis.

A false story someone picked up years ago 
that’s still running the show.

Ironman isn’t my midlife crisis.
It’s my midlife clarity.

A reminder that once you stop believing the limits 
you were handed - everything changes.

Your health.
Your mindset.
Your business.
Your entire trajectory.

For 35 years, that story ran my life.
Now, I get to write the next chapter.

So here’s my truth:
If you’re carrying a story that’s holding you back - 

Go get it "tested".

It might just come back negative too.

“Dad, I understand why you hike most Fridays.”
I’ll admit that one got me. 

My kids are young... but they get it.

Will's Green Walk isn’t just about fitness. 
It isn’t just about being outdoors. 

They said it themselves:

 - “It’s about being free from chaos. (them lol)”
 - “It’s about conversations.”
 - “It’s about community.”

And they’re right. That’s exactly why I hike. 

It’s not only exercise... it’s connection, 
clarity, and perspective.

It made me reflect on another question 
my kids often ask me:

“Dad, what do you actually do?”

I’m not “the LinkedIn guy.” 

Yes, LinkedIn is the catalyst, but it’s only part of it. 

What I really do is:
• Create opportunity.
• Build systems that remove friction.
• Spark collaboration.
• Translate complexity into clarity.
• Help people turn hope into execution.

Last week, I skipped my usual Lion’s Head hike. 

Not because I didn’t want to be there - but because 
I’m focused on solving a problem 
most people experience: 

making sense of LinkedIn and 
extracting real value from it.

Because here’s the truth:
LinkedIn is for everyone. 

But most people need a system that works around 
them, not the other way around. 
And it needs to be affordable.

That’s the journey I’m on. 

And like hiking, it’s not something I can (or want to) do alone.

So here’s my invitation:

I’m done taking risks built on unknowns.

This week was a swirl: school holidays, wife in the UK, heavy workload - and a few decisions that could change my next chapter.

On a hike up Lion’s Head with the crew this 
morning, something clicked.

It wasn’t the view.
It was the people.

There are two contexts of risk:

1) Risk with trust cushions (shared history, aligned incentives, clear terms).

2) Risk with unknowns (new people, new markets) - only smart if the downside is capped and the learning is fast.

My rule: I take the bet if:

- the downside is capped
- the decision is reversible or the trust is verified
- the upside compounds learning/impact

I’m choosing the first.

Because sitting on an idea creates noise.
And noise kills momentum.

My next move is about democratising LinkedIn - making it easier for more people to win here.

It will cost time, money, and focus.

But the cost is validated by trust: the partners I believe in, the values we share, and the commitment to do work that actually creates opportunity.

Standing on that edge this morning, 
I was reminded: this isn’t about me.

Yes, I want the milestones.

But the real win is impact - seeing more people thrive.
Call it cheesy if you want. I’m okay with that. 

I know my truth.

So… today’s the day.
Decisions get made.

The course shifts - toward momentum, positive change, and work that matters.

Here’s to the crew for the clarity.

I only got to this point because I made the decision.
18 months ago, I underestimated LinkedIn.

And it cost me.

Projects I could’ve landed slipped away.
