I just turned down a client... for the second time 😅

An agency I knew through a friend reached out.

Tools media buyers use

"Follow your passion" is probably the dumbest advice ever.

Sure, everyone’s heard that famous Steve Jobs speech.

But I don’t buy it.

When I quit my government job, I wanted to find something I’d be passionate about.

I tried everything:

→ Learning to code
→ Trading stocks
→ Data science
→ SEO

Each time, the passion lasted a few months. Then it fizzled out.

Then I stumbled upon a book about Facebook ads.
It gave me a basic idea of paid marketing.

Later, I helped a friend set up a few campaigns for his dropshipping store.

Still didn’t feel too passionate about it.

The spark came later.

I met a guy in a coworking space in Thailand.
He was charging $1,200/month to run Facebook ads for a medspa.

(for context, I was making zero dollars at the time)

That’s when I ditched the idea of “finding my passion” and decided to follow the skill (and the money).

I got a job at a marketing agency
Got better at running ads
Started making real money
Eventually started my own shop

But here’s what’s interesting:

The more I mastered the skill, the more I started to enjoy it.

Costco's $4.99 rotisserie chicken might be the best lead magnet ever created 😁

Last Sunday, my girlfriend and I wanted a quick dinner.

We were near Costco, so we stopped by for one thing: a roasted chicken.

But here’s the catch…
The chicken stand is all the way at the back of the store.

By the time we hit the cashier, that “one thing” had turned into a $200 haul.

My marketing brain couldn’t let it go, so I dug into the strategy behind it.

Here’s what I found about Costco’s $5 chicken:

→ They sell over 150,000 every single day
→ The price hasn’t changed since 2009
→ Costco raises its own chickens
→ They’re only on the shelf for 2 hours max
→ And yes… they’re intentionally placed in the back so you buy more along the way

If you’re into business models and retail psychology, the Acquired podcast episode on Costco is great. It’s a 3-hour listen, but absolutely worth your time.

Anyway… back to that chicken.

It ended up becoming our meal prep for the entire week.

And now I’m obsessed with it 😂

One daily habit doubled my agency profit margin.

(Hint: it’s not sending more DMs)

Every morning, before I even open Slack, I open my bank accounts.

I do four things:

1/ Check our cash position (in an ideal world, it’s 3x monthly Opex)

2/ Check all payables (who we owe money to)

3/ Go through all charges from the previous day, categorize them, and log them in Airtable

4/ Add all incoming payments to Airtable

It takes 15 minutes max. But the ROI is massive.

I used to think sales solved all problems. And while that’s still true in many cases...

But what actually grows your profit margin is ruthless expense tracking.

Now I know where every dollar goes, every single day.

If we’re paying for a tool no one touched in 30 days?
I cancel it on the spot.

That one habit alone easily saves us thousands of dollars every month.

And every dollar saved goes directly to our bottom line. 

Do this for 90 days, and you'll be surprised how much your profit margin improves without acquiring a single new client.

I started playing tennis a few years ago.
(I still suck 😅)

But it has taught me a lot about being an agency owner.

1.  Focus is everything

In tennis, you can be super athletic… but if your focus slips for one second, you miss the ball.

Business is the same.

I don’t know anyone who built something meaningful without the ability to sit still, focus, and grind for weeks, months, and years straight.

2. Learn how to reset
   
Roger Federer, the best tennis player of all time, won only 54% of the points he played.

His secret? The ability to reset.
To leave a missed point behind and play the next one like nothing happened.

Business is no different.

Bad sales call? Lost client? Wrong hire?
If you let that failure carry into the next point, you’re done.

3. Master the basics

Most amateur players try to do way too much.

They hit too hard, go for trick shots, and play fancy tennis they’ve never practiced.

And that’s why they lose.

The winners?
They master the fundamentals.
A strong serve and a consistent forehand are enough to beat 90% of players.

Business is the same.

Most agency owners constantly chase new strategies, new marketing channels, new service lines.

But the ones who win are the ones who pick one thing and master it relentlessly.

The most important decision-making framework I live by:

"If it’s not a f*ck yes, it’s a no."

Simple framework. Hard to follow when emotions kick in.

Here’s a real example from recently:

I was about to hire an ops manager for my agency.

On paper, she was a great fit.
Strong resume.
Likeable personality.
Would probably get along with the team.

But something felt off.

There was a bit of drama with her turning down our offer and then coming back three weeks later.

My immediate thought:
"If we have this much friction before we even start, what happens later?"

But I still wanted to hire her.

She had all the skills I needed.
And I started fantasizing about my 4-hour workweeks 😅

I spent the entire day going back and forth

(Spoiler: decision frameworks are easier said than done)

I asked ChatGPT and Claude: 
What would Warren Buffett or Alex Hormozi do?

Finally, I knew what to do.

I sent her a kind message thanking her for her time, but said we wouldn’t be moving forward.

She thanked me for the honesty.

It was 100% the right call.

Next time you're stuck on a decision...

If it's not a f*ck yes, it's a no.
