I've come to understand this concept better last week at INSEAD. With every new endeavour comes a bit of friction - it's an effort to create momentum. But it's this very friction that propels us, allowing us to gain speed and make genuine progress.

My personal and professional journey has taught me to embrace these hurdles, these points of friction.

They are not merely forces working against us, but stepping-stones that launch us forward in our development and growth.

Strolling through my client's office, a distinct quote catches my eye. 


A timeless piece of wisdom: 'There is no success without hardship'.Working in different verticals, I've witnessed this truth play out countless times. 

Success stories are not crafted overnight. 


Behind every accomplishment, lies an untold narrative of struggle and perseverance. 

Take the start-up world, for example. High-flying enterprises like Tesla, Airbnb, or Spotify didn't find success served on a silver platter. Rather, they dug their heels in during times of crises, held onto the vision, and prevailed against the odds. 

These companies lie testament to the invaluable relationship between success and hardship. They didn't shy away from challenges; instead, they leveraged them as stepping stones towards their goals.

In my own professional journey, I've embraced this perspective. Each challenge confronted is an opportunity for growth, a stepping stone to success. It's resilience in the face of adversity that carves our path towards triumph.

So, here's a thought to ponder on: Are you viewing your challenges as setbacks or stepping stones? 

The perspective you choose might just reshape your journey to success.

Charting my course with the dawn's early light.

I've always been a believer in the power of mornings. Those quiet, undisturbed moments when the day is fresh and potential-filled - they're the wind in my sails, the compass in my journey.

As a professional coach, being the captain of my ship is invigorating. It involves seizing the day, literally from the moment I rise. I create my morning routine with intention, knowing that it shapes my mood, productivity and overall success.

It's a practice shared by many leaders and achievers, and it's no surprise why. Richard Branson, Oprah Winfrey - they've spoken time and time again about how their morning rituals are key to their extraordinary success.

Whether it's delving into a good book, breaking a sweat with a workout, seeking peace in meditation or fuelling up with a hearty breakfast, my mornings are sacred. They set the tone, they map my direction.

Once, I dismissed THINKING as a chore. Why?

Every single day, I made a conscious choice to work hard physically, just to maintain a mental state of idleness. 

But one day, I decided to challenge the status quo, I chose to engage my mind, not just my muscles.

The journey wasn't easy; it was filled with intricate puzzles, demanding dilemmas, and thought-provoking questions. But guess what? It was liberating. 

The lessons I've gained have transformed not just the way I work, but the way I view the world around me. Thinking isn't just hard work – it's a KEY to unlocking limitless potential and opportunities.

Feeling like you're getting buried under the churning waves of change, or are you managing to ride them like a pro surfer? 

In today’s fast-moving world, the game's rules are constantly changing. It’s not about just getting by anymore, it's about growing and adapting. So, how do we do that? 

Simple: by getting thirsty for knowledge and never stopping learning.

But hold on, don’t get me wrong. I'm not talking about cramming your head with facts or chasing after degrees. No, what I mean is creating a way of thinking that's not scared of a bit of change, that's up for tackling challenges, and that sees every bump in the road as part of the journey. 

It's about letting your curiosity run wild and always keeping your mind open; it means jumping out of your comfort zone and taking sensible risks.

So here's my challenge to you. 

Find something in your life or work that's started to feel too easy, too comfortable. 

Now, set yourself a goal to shake things up a bit in that area. Be brave: gobble up a book that you wouldn't usually pick up, take a punt on an online course that piques your interest, or go have a chat with someone who fires up your imagination. 

The goal isn't only to learn, but to evolve - to keep growing and changing and striving to get better. 

By embracing lifelong learning, you're not just boosting your career prospects, you're transforming your entire outlook.

Friday’s here and it's been a roller coaster of a week!

I recently had the pleasure of revisiting a beloved place from my past - Pret A Manger. 


This establishment holds a significant place in my personal history, serving as a frequent destination during my tenure in London.

Upon entering, I was immediately enveloped by the familiar aroma of fresh food, a distinctive scent that precipitated an unexpectedly vivid regression to my London years. 

Those were the days of brisk weather, hurried walks to office, and the invigorating bustle of the city. However, despite the pace, there existed a comforting constancy in my daily visits to Pret A Manger.

This experience triggered an introspection – a recognition of how seemingly small, mundane experiences vastly contribute to shaping us as professionals and individuals. These moments influence our outlook, value systems and ultimately, the personal brands we cultivate.

As leaders, fostering a culture that values and utilises these unique strengths can build a resilient and productive team. It promotes a growth mindset, encouraging continuous learning and adaptation to change.

Picture this: Cambridge, UK. A leadership workshop bubbling with tension, anger simmering under the surface.

I was knee-deep in the challenge with a former colleague.

It was day one and our audience was angry, distraught by a recent management decision. Traditional methods? Ice-breakers? 


Not a drop in the ocean. The atmosphere was colder than a winter's night. 

So, we tossed the rulebook. 

We decided to make the switch - goodbye lecture, hello discussion. What were they feeling? We asked. We listened. We cared. Their emotions, raw and palpable, began to thaw the icy silence. It felt like the first rays of dawn, piercing through a moonless night.

Their guard came down. Their potential, once veiled by frustration, began to shine. Their anger transformed into passion, passion into action. The room was buzzing with newfound vitality.

The takeaway? It's profound yet simple. You can plan till the cows come home but nothing resonates more than genuine empathy. When they feel seen, heard and valued, the magic happens.

A friend Shui (水meaning water) spoke to me a few months ago.

Due to a reorganisation, he now reports to someone who was previously his peer.

He felt that this was a "downgrade" for him.  It was hard for him to accept the change.

"Is there a pay cut?" I asked.

"No," he replied.

"Any change in your responsibilities?" I asked.

"Yes.  Although I am downgraded in terms of hierarchy, I now take on regional responsibilities."

After some discussion, we agreed that other than the perceived "downgrade" in position, he is not worse off.  In fact, because he takes on regional responsibilities, he gets to learn about the business outside Singapore and could also make further impact.

When we look at the Chinese character 我 (meaning I or me, pronounced as wo), it consists of two words: 手 （meaning hand, pronounced as shou) and 戈 (meaning weapon, pronounced as ge).  It means that each one of us holds a weapon in our hands.  If used correctly, we will benefit not only ourselves but also others.  Otherwise, it can be counterproductive.

In fact, another way to interpret 我 is : mirror image of two 戈 ie 雙面刃 (double-edged sword).

So it's really a matter of perspective.  We don't always have a choice of what role we play or who we work with.  But we do have a choice of how we want to make the best use of that role to make a difference and learn.

My friend Shui agreed that instead of feeling upset, he would use this opportunity to reset and better define his own value proposition.  As well, this would be a platform for him to set the winning aspirations and strategy for his team, further showcasing his strengths.

When we caught up recently, he told me his new manager and stakeholders were happy to see the transformation he made to his team.  The initial success and quick-wins gave him confidence to continue with this journey...and I could see that spark in his eyes.

Happy for him. And thanks for the kopi-o kosong (black coffee without sugar).

Yesterday was transformative. We embarked on an adventurous journey, merging LEGO Serious Play with the power of Circle Conversation to create what I've now fondly coined as 'LSP Circle'. 

Circle Conversations are more than just words. They're a tool. A tool that gifts each person with the ability to both articulate and absorb. They level the playing field, ensuring every voice is not only heard but valued and respected. 

In this newfound harmony, we created a space for reconciliation where previously lost conversations began to resurface. It underpinned a shared victory, a sense of unity amongst our team that could only be described as sublime.

The experience shifted as much as it healed. The room swirled with a range of emotions - tears streamed down faces, cleansing old wounds.

But just as the storm brings the rainbow, so too came the joy, the release. Our session found a rhythm, and my participants found their feet. Dancing. Hugging. Celebrating.

Imagine a moment like this in your team. A day where every person realises their voice matters, where relationships strengthen through shared understanding.

The Power of 'No' in Leadership

How often do we associate leadership with the word 'Yes'? Constantly saying yes can lead to burnout, decreased effectiveness, and a lack of focus. However, the judicious use of 'No' can be a powerful tool in a leader's arsenal.

Embracing the power of 'No' allows leaders to set clear boundaries, prioritise tasks and projects that align with their vision, and most importantly, allocate resources efficiently. This strategic choice not only enhances personal productivity but also empowers teams by clarifying goals and expectations.

Let's shift our perspective on leadership. Instead of equating it with how many initiatives we can juggle, let's measure it by how effectively we can achieve our key objectives through selective focus.
