Resume Tip:

One of the biggest reasons strong candidates get overlooked?

Their resume’s too hard to read. 

Don't bother with fancy formatting or looking "modern." 

The joke in recruiting is that the best way to make your resume “eye-catching” is being qualified. With so many applicants, it’s not enough to have great experience...it has to be immediately visible. That’s why format and structure matter.

Shorter bullet points make content easier to scan. Trimming irrelevant (to the job posting) bullet points keeps the focus on what the reader is looking for. 

The use of white space guides the reader’s eye so you can control your narrative. Keep it to 1 column, and avoid tables, graphics and other design features 

(Yes, even you creatives...that's why you have a portfolio. Drop a link to it on your boring resume so its still easy to read.)

That’s exactly what this resume client worked on, and it’s why they’re still getting compliments on their resume years later.

Qualified but not getting interviews?

Your resume might have all the right keywords, but if you're leaving off context, you won't get an interview.

Recruiters aren’t hiring keywords...they’re hiring experience. 

A list of duties or skills doesn’t tell them whether you can actually do the job. And with 100s of applicants per posting, recruiters won’t assume you’re qualified just because you applied...they need proof.

Keywords might say what you did, but context shows how you did it and at what level. 

Tell the reader *how* you used those skills. That’s what lets a recruiter know that you have the experience they’re looking for.

That’s exactly what I helped a resume client with recently. Adding that context works! They landed multiple interviews…and a full-time, better-paying role!
