Rumors have it that many negociants are facing financial difficulties. Could 2023 be the vintage that saves En Primeur?
 
It depends on a simple formula: the release needs to be the most affordable wine available. This was always En Primeur’s original premise.
 
If not, collectors end up being able to buy the wines for less in the future. If this continues to be the trend, I don’t see how much longer the En Primeur tradition can survive. 
 
First week of the 2023 releases, and we’ve compiled some charts of the key releases, compared to previous vintages’ UK market price. While we’ve seen considerable discounts, the picture is not as rosy as I would have hoped.
 
Leoville Las Cases, promoting a 40% decrease in price, just goes to show how overpriced they were last year. For comparison, just look at the scores and prices of 2017 and 2014.
 
 I’m not a financial advisor but I do like numbers that tell a clear story.

With the release of Château Angélus 2023 En Primeur today, let's journey back to our visit to the Château.

There's no doubt that the Château has consistently produced exceptional wines over the years. There is notably a lot of value in back vintages.

Stéphanie de Boüard-Rivoal, CEO of Château Angelus, noted that, "If I had to buy a vintage of our own wine, I would get the 2016." The 2016 vintage received two 99-point scores and is a favorite vintage for its powerful, yet balanced tannins.

Last week I posted WineCap charts about the key En Primeur 2023 releases and received some great feedback! So, I decided to share some more insights on what to buy from Bordeaux '23 this week.

France was on holiday...again, so things have been a bit quiet. Still, the beginning of the week saw some big releases:

➡️Petit Mouton: Best priced in a decade, and attractively scored. One that always offers value, and holds significant price appreciation potential. On average, the brand has risen in value 109% in the last decade.

➡️Mouton Rothschild: Among the best priced, slightly edged by Petit Mouton.  A first growth that should be more valuable in years to come.

➡️Clerc Milon & Armailhac: Affordable options, with some back vintages like 2019 looking better.

➡️Haut Batailley: Looking better than 2022 and 2021, but the 2015 and 2014 vintages stand out.

➡️Angelus: Second most costly vintage on the market today, with some stronger vintages offering better value. However, 2021, 2020, 2019, 2018, 2017, 2016 are all down on their initial release prices.

Throwback to tasting En Primeur at Château La Mission Haut-Brion with my mum. 🍷

I thought it would be fitting to share some images of our visit seeing as Château Haut-Brion and Château La Mission Haut-Brion 2023 were released as En Primeur today.

Back in 2019, we tasted the 2018 Domaine Clarence Dillon En Primeurs. It was very special for me to be able to show this industry event to my mother. This week’s Bordeaux 2023 releases continued to make noise but were they worth buying?

For me, some of the wines were reasonably priced but the benefits were conditional. If you plan to buy and hold for 10 plus years and then drink them, then yes, some wines were worth considering. Ultimately, these are the châteaux’ target customers.

But not all offerings were compelling enough, and even those that were, will probably cost you less at some point in the future. In my view, this week didn’t offer much for those purchasing with the intention of reselling at a profit. However, we were interested in Cheval Blanc. As the chart shows, there are other more affordable vintages but not for a wine of this quality.

The release of Château Cheval Blanc 2023 En Primeur today takes me back to my time at this extraordinary Château.  

Cheval Blanc remains one of the most consistent wines. According to Pierre Olivier Clouet of Château Cheval Blanc, "The diversity of the vintage is the DNA of a wine estate." This is evident in the 2023 vintage, which has received high praise from many wine critics, including Antonio Galloni, who describes the wine as "silky, elegant and exceptionally polished".

What impact does biodiversity have on vineyards?

‘If you like wine with energy, with fruit and floral, drink Cheval Blanc after ten years. If you like delicacy, complexity, volume on the mid-palate, drink Cheval Blanc after 30 years. If you like wine with emotion, precision, drink Cheval Blanc after 60 years.

If you compare with a human life, you can be a very interesting teenager and you will be a very interesting young adult and a very nice old man. But during all your life, what you had to tell is different.’
