Today’s my birthday.

For the first time in a long time, I don’t feel the need to say much more than happy birthday to myself.

Maybe I’m getting older (and a little grumpier 😂), or maybe I’m just genuinely content, and that feels like enough.

I spent over ₦500,000 on a 10-day trip to Abuja and learned that many young professionals in this country are cooked.

We're cooked not because of poverty or any of that, but because we've all convinced ourselves that spending money on our own sanity is irresponsible.

I'm in my 20s. I've been freelancing for three years while juggling medical school on the side.

I've never repeated a class or failed in school, never disappointed a client. I spend money on my family, I'm saving for my goals, I practically do everything "right."

And I was miserable.

When my friends invited me to Abuja, my first reaction wasn't excitement, it was guilt.

My first thought was "Can I afford this?" even though I knew I could.

Then the other thoughts kept rolling in: "Should I be spending this? What if something happens and I need that money?"

That guilt followed me the entire trip.
Every meal, every activity, every transport fare, I was calculating every naira I was "wasting" instead of just being present.

And it's crazy because this isn't how it is for other young professionals in other countries.

But here in Nigeria, we've been so conditioned to defer joy that we don't know how to experience it without guilt anymore.

We're waiting for some mythical "later" when we've made enough, saved enough, done enough to deserve a break.

But that "later" never comes.

The goalpost just keeps moving.
You hit one savings target and immediately set another.
You solve one family issue, and another appears.
You finish one project and three more land in your inbox.

Meanwhile, you're burning out in real time, calling it discipline.

I spent ₦500K and came back with something I hadn't felt in months: clarity, energy to chase my goals, and perspective.

The kind that makes you better at your work, not worse.
The kind that reminds you why you're doing any of this in the first place.

Rest isn't a luxury.
It's not something you "earn" after you've achieved some arbitrary milestone.

Your body and mind will collect that debt one way or another, either you pay it with a trip, or you pay it with burnout, anxiety, and months of your life you'll never get back.

So if you've been putting off that trip, that weekend away, getting those clothes, that thing you keep saying you'll do "when you have time”, this is your sign.

You're not being irresponsible, you're just a human making the most of the one shot at life that you have.

The guilt is lying to you.

I spent days building a pitch deck for a brand I admired and still got rejected because I wasn't in Lagos.

This happened in November last year.

I saw an opportunity with a brand and I really liked
Instead of just sending a normal application, I went all in. 

I spent days putting together a full marketing strategy; content ideas, content pillars, growth campaigns, basically everything.

I even visualized how they could get leads and increase engagement.

Then the CEO reached out to me personally and asked to speak with me.
That was when I knew I was a strong candidate.

Because honestly, how many people apply for a job and the CEO actually reaches out to them directly?

I was convinced this could be my next big project.
Then we had the meeting.
And they told me they needed someone physically based in Lagos.

That actually stung because I had tried a different approach and I was hoping for a good result.

But I didn’t let it weigh me down.
This wasn’t my first rejection, so I told myself to take it easy.

And it’s funny when you think about it.
You get rejected by foreign companies because you’re not in their country.
Then you get rejected here in Nigeria because you’re not in Lagos.
Anyway, why am I sharing this? 
Because learning to handle rejection is very important.

Rejections will happen
Mistakes will happen too

The important thing is not letting them break you.

To anyone feeling down after a rejection, pick yourself back up.
Study why it happened.
If it’s within your control, work on it.

Rejection isn’t the end, and it’s part of the process.

I was thinking about this the other day when my friend and I were listening to music. 

Some random D12 song came on, and 3 seconds in, he goes, "wait is that Eminem?"

He had never heard the song before, and to make it even funnier, Eminem sounds completely different on it. 

But he knew it was Eminem immediately because of the flow.

Most people don't even know Eminem was in a band lol, but sitting there I just thought... oh that's literally what personal branding is.

Being so unmistakably you that people know it's you before they even check.

Like you hear "du dunnnn" and you know someone turned Netflix on without looking. 

Or you're scrolling online, and you just KNOW who wrote something before you see the name.

That's not because they're posting every day or following some guru's content calendar. 

They just sound like themselves consistently enough that you recognize them in 2 seconds.

Stop letting random strangers online who don’t care about your growth make you chase vanity metrics and forget that your voice is your marketing.

And your personality is what people actually remember. 

Not your post frequency.
 Not announcing the time you post for maximum engagement.
 And definitely not commenting first, so someone notices you and comments back.

Just you, being you.
