Develop an end-to-end optimisation process that all teams in the company can follow. The goal: make Trainline a test-driven company and equip all teams with all the necessary skills to run their own optimisation programs effectively.

To that end responsibilities were to document and maintain a set of processes and procedures as wiki documents and training videos; create templates aimed to speed up and standardise experiment builds; and conduct training sessions and one-to-one consultations where necessary. My remit covered developers, product owners, designers and analysts.

Overall this resulted in an approximately five-fold increase in test launches from the previous year. Velocity continuously increases as more teams become ready to test on new technology platforms. This is while maintaining a decent win rate. 

I oversaw projects to move the statistical methodologies to bayes (aimed at speeding up analysis and making stats more accessible), and also projects to develop inhouse analytics dashboards to make experiment reads more available. 

Overall this reduced the average runtime of experiments as analysts were more confident in reading tests.

To assist Thoughtworks and the Development team develop sites on the new Tracs3 platform, from initial UI architecture and design through to implementation and provide quality assurance on all new front end developments to ensure they meet agreed standards on code quality. (white labels, XHTML etc)

This is the #ai-based text-mining app I've been working on for the last couple of years or-so (there's no name yet, and I'm open to suggestions!). 

The app takes large amounts of qualitative text input (eg. user reviews, user feedback) and analyses that text for topics and themes. You can also then "talk to the data"!

In this short video, I take you through a tour of the app so far, as well as explain why I built this thing instead of using one of the other off-the-shelf tools. 

(SPOILER: It was all about accuracy and transparency of how the data is analysed. And also I was keen to avoid using data to train models!)

Do you need an extra pair of hands to help you with your experimentation program? Perhaps you need help getting it up and running, create documentation or train developers, designers and analysts in the process? If so, maybe I can help.

In my previous role as Head of Optimisation at Trainline, I supported a team of 50+ developers in building experiments and test-specific metrics (both web and app platforms); supported multiple product owners with hypothesis generation, test ideation, strategy and prioritisation; I also supported analysts with reading and communicating test results using Bayes statistical methods.

My approach was to cover around 80% of needs through documentation of processes and procedures (eg. written and visual). I supplemented these procedures through writing case studies of previous experiments, and provided training (as groups as well as one-to-one). 

For more complex needs--the other 20%, I acted as an internal consultant advising on practical solutions. 

My goal is to help inspire and equip teams with the necessary skills and work practices they need to run an efficient experimentation program and ultimately help increase test velocity.

What I learned this week.

👉 As some of you may know, for the last 1.5+ years, I've been developing a "Qualitative User Research Tool", built with #AI to help analyse all sorts of qualitative user texts.

It's been a real learning experience for me in many ways.

My most recent learning is this: I've been sick the last week, having just recovered very recently, and have been trying to fix some bugs in the tool.

👎 Editing code while being mentally compromised is a horrible experience, but this highlighted that much of my code was needlessly complex.

👍 Instead of persevering with the current complex code, I decided to re-write large chunks of it, simplifying the logic. It was the right move, I'm able to code with a lower "mental cost"--a WIN in my book. 

All this reminded me of the times I paired with one of the most talented developers I know: Ting Kuei. 

His coding process was this:

1️⃣ Add some functionality or new feature to the code
2️⃣ Delete what you wrote, and rewrite the code

The gist of this idea is that the first time you write code, you're figuring out stuff as you uncover complex relationships of variables and other functions, etc. 

All this leads to complexity in that first attempt.

When you go for a second draft, you should be aware of the complex challenges you'll face for developing the functionality. 

All this means you should be able to really simplify that code. Genius. I wonder how many other developers actively do multiple passes on their own code?
