Scary truth: the way you work is literally killing you.

The more time you spend at a desk - seated or standing - your cardiovascular, musculoskeletal, and psychological health are all deteriorating.

Why? Our bodies were designed to be active. For nearly all of our existence, until about 1950, we had naturally active lifestyles, walking at least 15,000 steps a day.

Over the last 75 years, that's gone down to less than 5K, creating a global pandemic of preventable diseases that cause premature death.

But there is some good news. While most modern technology has made us more sedentary and chained to our desks, a pivotal space that's slowly but surely evolving could reverse this trend and allow us to be more mobile again: augmented reality (AR).

We put together a comprehensive white paper on the AR space:
- The severe health problems we face from modern office work
- How AR technology is equipped to mitigate these risks & the progress that has been made
- The technical challenges that remain & how they can be overcome to enable us to work while getting our steps in

Last week, I dressed like this in public. Here's what I learned: 

- You care way more about what you do/how you look than anyone else does. The reality is that nobody else really cares and you're overthinking, sometimes you just need to send it and see what happens. 

- People are surprisingly receptive to creative/borderline ridiculous strategies. Almost every single person I approached to complete the survey on the QR code was happy to do so, and I got only positive or neutral reactions.

- In a world where literally everyone is flooded with cold DMs and emails, people crave in-person interactions.

So why I was walking around like this in the first place? I'm doing research on health/ergonomics at work to support the white paper we recently released. Basically getting a pulse on physical issues people experience at work, how much they're able to walk throughout the day, etc.

As for what I've learned on that front, early results corroborate our hypothesis that there is a dire need to make office life less sedentary - and that people are willing to pay to do so.

Seeing a LOT of hate on X about Atlassian's $610M acquisition of The Browser Company. Here's my take:

1. Consumers are clearly sick of incumbent browsers like Chrome and Safari that have barely changed - at least meaningfully - over the last several years.

2. Companies clearly see this as a massive opportunity. Atlassian wasn't the only bidder - Perplexity and OpenAI were reportedly interested in the deal as well, which should come as no surprise, since both are making strong plays in the market with their own browsers. 

3. This is great for entrepreneurship as a whole. I've seen a ton of hate because Arc and Dia (The Browser Company's products) are "chromium wrappers." Just goes to show you that you don't have to build something completely from scratch for it to have value; there's plenty of opportunity to improve upon existing products. 

4. This is great for the market as a whole. I, for one, have been sick of incumbent browsers for years, so much so that I built my own. IMO, the job's not done until having dozens of tabs open at any given time is something we laugh about ever having been the status quo.

What do you think about the acquisition?

Growing up, my mom used to tell me how lucky I was that I had Google. If she ever wanted to look something up, she had to do it the old-fashioned way by, dun dun dun, going to the library (gasps!)

Crazy to think that when my kids grow up, looking things up on Google will be obsolete. In fact, it already is. 

The Google era way of learning about a topic in depth: spending weeks on end scouring Google Search, YouTube, etc. to search for and consume various sources of information, and evaluate whether they are quality sources to begin with.

The Perplexity Deep Research Mode way of learning about a topic in depth: become more knowledgeable about that topic than 99% of the population with a handful of prompts. 

Of course, it's not like you can just magically absorb information and become an expert - you still have to go through the sources it's pulling to provide insights in depth, consume lots of information, and verify what it shares with you. But the time it saves allows you to start connecting dots so much faster - I genuinely believe that within 5 days, you can become a quasi-expert about any topic. 

I've used it to research various topics and conduct market sizing analyses - both types of work that I used to do with Google - and I'm never going back.

Hot take: tab groups suck. They make things worse and more convoluted. 

Here's what will actually make it possible to work without 27 open tabs: 

1. Revamped UI for displaying/hiding browser windows. The concept of grouping tabs together makes sense, but what's missing is a way to easily pull up what you need and manipulate the layout of your screen (e.g., a split-screen view of the article you're reading on one side and your Google Doc on the other). 

Without this, tab groups are contributing to the ridiculous problem of squinting to find the tab you need/using hotkeys to flip between them until you get to the one you need.

2. A built-in, deeply integrated AI Assistant. Directly tied to the first point, a browser should be able to find and organize any of your links without manual effort on your part. This requires a native AI Assistant that responds to text and voice commands. 

Tabs of tabs is like fighting fire with fire. We don't need band-aids; we need to fundamentally rethink the way we navigate the web and interact with information.
