After almost a decade of being the firm administrator and CFO of a small law firm I understand the unique challenges that small businesses face when it comes to managing their finances. I use my experience as a law firm CFO and paralegal to provide fractional CFO services to law firms that are looking to reach growth goals. I am passionate about helping business owners overcome  challenges and achieve their growth goals. As a fractional CFO for small businesses I help improve financial operations by providing strategic financial guidance, managing cash flow, and analyzing financial data to identify opportunities for growth and improvement.

I provide full service bookkeeping for small businesses to help bring financial confidence to small business owners.

As an entrepreneur you tend to figure things out because you literally have no other choice. 

I was talking to a friend today and giving her tips on social media and networking. We laughed because in my past job I wanted NOTHING to do with marketing or social media. 

Now I LOVE learning more about how I can use social media. How to produce large amounts of original content efficiently. 

I LOVE telling everyone how to use LinkedIn to build their brand and connect with others. I joke LinkedIn was my part time job from July 2023-December 2023. 

But I will admit I am not an expert by any means. I have done what is necessary to grow my business. In that process I have discovered a part of business that I really really enjoy.

As a law firm owner there are times when you need to reevaluate your fees and increase those fees. 

This is especially true for firms who are charging a flat fee. you need to be analyzing data to make sure you are charging for the time that is being spent.

As a firm owner you may hesitate to increase fees. It can feel uncomfortable to charge your clients more of their hard earned money. You may also hesitate due to fear of not signing on new clients.

Acknowledging it can be uncomfortable and scary is the first step.

Talking about the why behind increasing fees will help you feel more comfortable about the increase. Sometimes increasing fees can lead to you being able to provide a better service. 

By increasing fees it will give your firm the opportunity to hire a great team that will help you grow and reach more clients. As well as freeing up some of your limited time.

You provide an exceptional service for clients and help them in their time of need. Chances are your potential clients would happily pay the increased fees.

Being an entrepreneur means always having new ideas and sometimes having to say no to those ideas. 

We are camping this weekend and that lead to discussions on a new business idea. Renting out campers, AirBnB style. 

After some fun discussion we figured the profit wouldn’t make sense and the time commitment didn’t fit our current lifestyle goals. 

The same idea is true when you are a law firm owner. You probably have 50 (or more) ideas to expand at any given time. 

The key is to figure out what ideas make sense financially and fit into the greater goal. Being able to work through this process efficiently helps you focus on what WILL work and what DOES make sense.

Since then I have completed three college degrees. 

I have also learned as a leader I won’t be “bossing” people around. More like guiding and learning along with them. 

Best of all I can confirm I much prefer being my own boss, which is probably how I should have worded this 13 years ago.

Yesterday my post was about entrepreneurs figuring all the things out because we have to in the beginning. 

At the end of that post I mentioned the financial/accounting side of entrepreneurship. I am going to guess, most entrepreneurs do not find they LOVE accounting and quickbooks. 

Here’s the thing with being an entrepreneur and dealing with the accounting/finances. 

I believe you should have an understanding of your finances. BUT this is the FIRST thing you need to outsource. 

Setting up your accounting system, billing system etc. You should have help with this early on. 

Especially if you are a law firm owner with a trust account. 

Partner with someone who is familiar with law firm accounting. It will save you money and headaches.

Law firm financials are more than math and numbers. 

My nine year old was telling me about what she is learning in math recently. We talked about how she needs to make sure she understands the why and how when doing math. The actual adding and subtracting will eventually be done by calculator. 

Same can be said for your law firm financials. The categorizing and math is all handled in your accounting software. 

Knowing how to categorize transactions to optimize your data analysis and knowing how to interpret the data is the key to financial success. 

When I work with clients I make sure they know the why and how. I believe going beyond basic understanding. This is the way to gain confidence in your law firms financial decisions.

Are you setting unrealistic goals for your firm? 

When I work with clients my first step is talking about goals. This helps us establish a road map to achieve (and exceed) those goals. 

I am a BIG believer of setting BIG goals that will take hard work to achieve. We need something to work towards that will make us a little uncomfortable. 

BUT I think it is possible to set unrealistic goals, and that will just hurt your firm in the long run. 

It can be discouraging to your team if you consistently set unrealistic goals and consistently do not achieve those goals.

As you look ahead to the rest of 2024 I want you to set big goals that will challenge your team. But make sure your team can reasonably achieve those goals.

How can I avoid setting unrealistic goals for my firm?

Do you share financial metrics and goals with your team? 

The old school way of thinking is to keep quiet about business financials. The thought was, if you tell your team how much you are making they might ask for more money. 

I believe transparency with your team is crucial for sustained growth. This includes financial transparency. 

First: sharing financial goals with your team gives them a road map to success. If they know they need to send out 20 demands a month to reach your revenue goal, then they have a specific number to work towards (and exceed).  

Second: sharing financial ups and downs with your team makes them aware of what is working and what is not working. If revenue is down and your team knows this they can help with a solution. 

Third: Sharing financial information with your team gives them a sense of ownership in the firm. When your team takes pride and ownership in what they are doing everyone wins. 

** There are some financial decisions that you would still keep private. But you can find a balance with transparency**

Driving through the city I live in there is A LOT of construction right now as they install city water. 

As I was driving today I was thinking how complicated the process looks. Right now the roads are a mess. I can’t even begin to understand how they will turn that into something  that works. 

I’m sure this is what others think when they look at their law firm fiancials. 

For me it’s “easy” and makes so much sense in my brain. For others all the numbers on financial statements can look like another language. 

This is just another reminder that we all excel in different areas of life. Work with those who know how to build the part of the plan that does not make sense in your brain. 

Together we can build a road that helps you reach your goals.
